About the job

Requirements
  • 15+ years in software or platform engineering, including 5+ years leading engineering teams or organizations and 8+ years building platforms or infrastructure other teams depend on.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on production AI/ML work, including direct work with large language models, agents, and evaluation; depth of shipped work is weighted over years in this area.
  • Experience building and running shared platforms used by many teams and making build-versus-buy and architecture decisions that shaped an engineering organization.
  • Hands-on command of large language models, agents, orchestration, evaluation, and production AI concerns including latency, cost, reliability, and safety.
  • Ability to personally architect and ship core platform services in the founding phase.
  • Experience partnering with executive peers on technical strategy and driving alignment across functions.
  • Proven ability to hire, level, and grow senior engineering talent and set a high craft bar.
  • Ability to build security, privacy, and safe-use controls into AI infrastructure by default.
Responsibilities
  • Set the technical strategy for AI Platform, build hands-on during the early phase, and scale the organization through a Director and principal engineers as adoption grows.
  • Lead the AI Platform core, including the LLM gateway, agent framework, prompt and agent libraries, and evaluation infrastructure.
  • Own developer experience and the Velocity program, including the AI harness, coding agents, testing and autonomy frameworks, and coverage gates that enable code merging without human review; own the product delivery cycle-time metric.
  • Build and run product-operations software, including instrumented cadences, automated reporting, gap analysis, and the product-development lifecycle maturity scorecard; an AI Product Ops Lead reports to this role.
  • Own shared APIs, orchestration, integrations, and automation engineering.
  • Own AI data infrastructure, including retrieval-augmented generation infrastructure, agent context pipelines and knowledge base, evaluation datasets, agent memory, and usage telemetry; consume the data warehouse through governed interfaces while leaving the warehouse, pipelines, and data quality with the Data organization.
  • Establish monitoring, cost controls, and security posture for platform AI in partnership with Security and IT.
  • Maintain one shared enterprise-wide platform without forks or parallel stacks while meeting Applied AI teams' delivery needs.
  • Grow the platform organization with a Director and principal and staff engineers across agent platform, infrastructure, evaluation, observability, security, and developer experience.
  • Integrate with the customer-facing AI runtime at its defined interface; the role owns the internal platform, not customer traffic.
  • Establish the core platform rails and adoption, instrument product delivery cycle time and publish an automated weekly scorecard, launch coverage gates and testing frameworks in initial pods, make the platform the default way to build AI, establish cost controls and security posture, and grow the platform organization on plan within the first six months.
  • Partner with the Senior Director of Applied AI and Senior Director of Workforce Transformation on the enterprise AI roadmap and cross-domain decisions.

Gamma's Grant Lee, Engine's Elia Wallen, and GV's Crystal Huang on landing your first 1,000 customers

At TechCrunch Disrupt 2026, Gamma CEO Grant Lee, Engine CEO Elia Wallen, and GV general partner Crystal Huang will discuss strategies for acquiring the first 1,000 customers. They'll cover community building, product-led growth, founder-led sales, and word of mouth tactics for early-stage startups. Lee co-founded Gamma, an AI-powered visual communication platform approaching 100 million users that reached $100 million in annual recurring revenue in 2025. Wallen bootstrapped Travelers Haven in 2008 before shifting to Engine, which now serves over 30,000 businesses and one million travellers. In July, Engine acquired Options Travel and TempoTrip. Huang, who focuses on SaaS, infrastructure, and AI investments at GV, will provide the investor perspective on early customer traction.

Navan partners with Engine to expand travel booking options and boost platform loyalty

Navan has partnered with Engine, a travel and spend technology provider, to expand booking options for its users. The collaboration will integrate Engine's payment and fintech solutions into Navan's platform, streamlining bookings, adjustments and cancellations. Initial offerings will launch this month, with additional features following in subsequent months. The partnership aims to enhance platform stickiness by providing greater flexibility and control over travel plans. The move follows Navan's acquisition of AI-driven meetings platform BoomPop. In the second quarter, Navan reported 45% growth in gross bookings, exceeding $3 billion, whilst revenue reached $233 million, up 35% year-over-year. However, the integration introduces technical risks, including potential disruptions during rollout. Relying on external infrastructure also creates dependency risks if Engine faces operational or financial challenges.

Engine acquires Options Travel to build AI-native booking tool for travel management companies

Engine has acquired Options Travel, a corporate travel management company with over 30 years of experience. Options Travel will continue operating independently under its current leadership, with all employees joining Engine. The acquisition follows nine months of collaboration, during which Engine identified significant technology gaps in the travel management company sector. Engine is now developing an AI-native online booking tool for the industry, featuring booking, payments, reporting, and customer management in a single dashboard. The new platform reduces booking times to 2.5 minutes, compared to the industry average of nearly 15 minutes. According to the Global Business Travel Association, nearly a third of corporate travel buyers are reconsidering their travel management company this year, primarily due to outdated technology rather than service quality. Engine will demonstrate the new platform at the GBTA Convention in Chicago from 3–5 August.
