Meta's Muse AI agent drives CEO to shift purchases away from Amazon

Meta's AI agent Muse is changing shopping habits for some early adopters, including Leif Abraham, cofounder and co-CEO of investing platform Public. Abraham told Business Insider he's been using Muse to purchase niche products like skincare, vintage wines, and discontinued Levi's jeans directly from brands. Amazon has blocked Muse from placing orders, citing concerns about credential storage and data scraping. This leaves potential revenue on the table if AI agent shopping gains traction. Shopify has taken the opposite approach, partnering with Meta to enable Muse purchases through Shop Pay. Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke said he's hearing similar stories about shifting shopping patterns. Abraham still uses Amazon for basic items but now reserves the marketplace for products requiring less research, like toilet paper.

Meta faces key tests with Q3 2026 results and potential $40B New Mexico penalty

Meta Platforms stock rose 26% over the past month, compared to 0.6% for the S&P 500, following the 8 September launch of Muse, its personal AI agent app. Management has guided for capital spending of $130 billion to $145 billion in 2026. Several upcoming events could move the stock. Meta's third-quarter 2026 results will show whether revenue meets guidance of $61 billion to $64 billion. New Mexico has requested up to $40 billion in penalties after a jury found Meta misled consumers about Facebook data privacy. Management warned that youth-related trials scheduled for 2026 may result in material losses. The company's fourth-quarter 2026 results, expected around 26 January 2027, will complete a year with forecast expenses of $165 billion to $169 billion.

Deutsche Bank forecasts Meta Muse could generate $36.3B in sales by 2030

Deutsche Bank has forecasted three potential revenue scenarios for Meta's Muse by 2030. In the most optimistic case, analysts predict the product could generate $36.3 billion in sales. The middle scenario estimates $10.7 billion, whilst the base case projects $2.4 billion in revenue. Meta's shares have risen approximately 23–24% over the past month, driven by enthusiasm surrounding Muse's revenue potential. The product has seen strong early adoption and downloads since its recent launch. The bank's analysis reflects growing Wall Street confidence in Muse's commercial prospects, though the product remains in its early stages with limited widespread usage currently.

Meta's Muse creates detailed profiles of users' friends and family through hourly data compilation

Researchers have extracted internal files from Meta's AI assistant Muse, revealing how the system organises user information. According to documents obtained by security researcher Karan Joshi, Muse creates detailed profiles of people in users' lives, including family, friends, and colleagues. The AI compiles data hourly to track relationships and make suggestions, such as recommending activities based on personal preferences. Profile pages can include sections like Facts, History, and relationship details, though they start sparse and develop over time. Meta says the files were intentionally accessible for transparency. The company's instructions direct Muse to use only available evidence rather than inventing details. Joshi described the approach as "pretty creepy", noting Meta's extensive access to social network data makes the system particularly noteworthy compared to general AI chatbots.

Meta unveils $10B+ subsea cable network spanning 6 continents with petabit-scale capacity

Meta announced Petal, a roughly 4,300-mile subsea cable connecting the US and France, expected to enter service in 2029. The cable will carry 1 petabit per second, double the capacity of today's most advanced transoceanic cables, using two-core fibre technology. The company has invested in over 20 subsea cable projects spanning six continents. Its most ambitious, Project Waterworth, will stretch more than 31,000 miles across five continents. Meta's 2Africa system circles Africa and connects to Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia, landing in 33 countries. Whilst Meta hasn't disclosed costs for Petal or Waterworth, TechCrunch reported Waterworth could exceed $10 billion. The company expects capital expenditures of $130 billion to $145 billion this year, nearly double 2025's spending.
