We are looking for an Associate to be part of investment unit, where you will be responsible for driving investments into, and maximising outcomes for, exceptional individuals and the companies they build at EF.

Talent Investors come in many guises, but it’s important that through your education, work and/or side projects you have been exposed to exceptionally talented people. You’ll likely have ~0-4 years of experience, with some exposure to early stage company building and/or investment.

We expect this role to be intense, fast-paced and entrepreneurial, with an opportunity for enormous impact and upside.

Responsibilities

1. Contribute to the development, and execution of, a thesis on where and how to find non-obviously exceptional founder talent: At EF we focus on people with exceptional talent who are too early in their careers to have generated achievements that would make them obviously exceptional founders. This requires you to think, and act, creatively when it comes to finding these people. You will contribute to the development and testing of hypotheses about where and how these people aggregate. This will involve identifying particular communities or institutions which are talent-dense (we call these “talent clusters”) and/or potential signals of exceptionalism (e.g. looking for winners of interesting prizes or scholarships).

2. Support the team to build relationships with key nodes, who can help you navigate talent clusters: At EF, we seek to build a deep understanding of a small number of dense talent clusters. To do this, we need to build enduring relationships with key nodes within these clusters, such as Computer Science Professors, or the leaders of interesting societies. You’ll be responsible for identifying these nodes, and supporting your team to build relationships with them.

3. Become a trusted advisor to exceptional talent, from before they realise they want to be a founder through to the close of their seed round and beyond: You will develop the skills that will enable you to unlock the potential of the deeply ambitious by working closely with them as a trusted career and company building advisor. This means accompanying them through the process of deciding they want to be a founder, developing their first idea, finding (and likely breaking up with) their first co-founder, reaching out to their first customers, right through to the moment they close their first round of external funding. You will leverage the power of EF’s global network to amplify your work.

4. Constantly train your mental model of what exceptional talent looks like: To be an excellent Talent Investor, you’ll need to be constantly training your mental model of what exceptional talent looks like. This will require; (i) prolonged and repeated exposure to exceptional talent through the activities outlined above, (ii) learning from EF’s best Talent Investors through apprenticeship-style training and (iii) the humility and discipline to learn from failure and success.

5. Contribute to our investment decisions into individuals and the startups they build: You will be a contributor to our investment decision-making, where we primarily focus on the potential of the talent, and subsequently the team/idea they have created.

They are able to believe and see possibility in individuals where their potential may not be obvious to others.

3. You understand and appreciate technology’s potential for impact: Talent Investors are fascinated by technology’s potential for impact, particularly through early stage company creation. Even if not a technologist by training, they will have developed an understanding of, and appreciation for, various different technologies, likely through self-directed learning.

4. You are a network builder: Talent Investors enjoy building, and immersing themselves within, networks of exceptional people. They can build meaningful relationships with exceptional people; both at peer-level, and with individuals more senior to themselves. They enjoy making intra- and inter-network connections.

Scarlet raises $50M Series B to accelerate AI medical device certification. Led by Headline, the funding will support the London-based company's expansion into the US and Asia-Pacific as it tackles lengthy certification processes for AI-powered medical devices. Scarlet, the certification body for AI and software medical devices, today announced a $50 million Series B led by Headline, with participation from new investor Notion Capital and existing investors Atomico, Creandum, Kindred Capital, and Entrepreneurs First. Nancy Xiao Mclaughlin, Partner at Headline, joins Scarlet's board. AI medical devices are being developed faster than certification bodies can review them. A company can train an AI diagnostic model in weeks and then wait 12 to 18 months for an assessment by experts, with another six to eight months of unnecessary delay for approval of a minor update, slowing down healthcare innovation. Scarlet is a government-designated certification body. Among the roughly 52 such organisations designated under the EU Medical Device Regulation, it is, according to the company, the only one that specialises in software and AI, and was truly built to enable AI's iterative development. Scarlet holds designations from the EU, the UK's MHRA, and the US FDA, where it is recognised as a Third Party Review Organisation. James Dewar and Jamie Cox founded Scarlet in London in 2021 after building AI medical devices at Babylon Health. The company spent its first three years working with regulators to obtain designation before issuing any certificates. Customers upload technical documentation to Scarlet's AI-enabled platform in any format. Qualified reviewers then assess the submission against relevant regulations and ultimately issue a certification decision, deciding whether the product can be released into the market or not. Customers are typically building devices that use cutting-edge AI such as LLMs and computer-vision models, and include consumer giants like Flo Health, who boast over 500 million downloads, US radiology behemoth DeepHealth, the UK's NHS England, cancer-detection AI company Skin Analytics, and AI Scribes such as Heidi Health and Tandem, who both recently announced nine-figure Series B fundraises. Scarlet also certifies the way AI products are actually built. Customers pay a subscription that covers ongoing surveillance, annual audits, and product changes. Because every assessment is consistent and every finding is evidenced, regulators can see the reasoning behind any certification decision at any time. "Scarlet has built a Notified Body for the AI world. The ability to release more rapid and frequent upgrades to our medical device ensures that our patients always have access to world-class care. We want to release upgrades to our medical device twice a month. We can with Scarlet," said Finn Stevenson, co-founder and CEO of Flok Health. "For every day that safe and effective medical technology is not available, someone's life takes a different course. ByteAsk, a startup based in San Francisco that builds AI coding agents for C and C++, said on September 24 that it raised US$1 million in pre-seed funding from Y Combinator, Entrepreneur First, and angel investors working at global quantitative trading firms. The startup said its code-verifying tool is designed for developers in mission-critical sectors, including defense, aerospace, finance, embedded systems, automotive, and semiconductors. ByteAsk was founded by Anirudha Kulkarni and Pratyush Saini, who previously co-founded LawSutra AI, a legal AI startup acquired by Manupatra, an Indian online legal research company. ByteAsk said it would use the funding to expand its engineering and research teams across San Francisco and Bengaluru. Sep 15, 2026 * Europe is awash with satellite developments * UK firm Open Cosmos has raised €300m * SES and Elveo are accelerating their D2D plans for the region Blink for a moment and you might miss a satellite communications development, such is the welter of activity in the sector right now as direct-to-device (D2D), satellite broadband and the non-terrestrial network (NTN) component of 6G strategies attract strategic and financial attention, with the latest wave of news centring around the growing demand for sovereign connectivity services in Europe. Open Cosmos, the UK-based satellite firm that earlier this year launched a new space-based internet of things (IoT) service to provide governments and multinationals with real-time Earth observation data as "contextual intelligence", has raised €300m from a broad range of investors led by European firms Lightrock, ETF Partners, Institut Català de Finances (ICF), Entrepreneurs First and two major international pension funds, the company has announced. It will use the funds to expand its satellite mass manufacturing capabilities (the company also make satellites as part of its OpenOrbit operation) and "accelerate the delivery of intelligence and connectivity services" by expanding ConnectedCosmos, its low-earth orbit (LEO) constellation that offers sovereign broadband and IoT connectivity; OpenConstellation - its shared Earth observation (EO) satellite platform; and DataCosmos - its data platform that processes EO imagery and sensor data. In announcing its raise, the company has shared a telling statistic: As space becomes a "critical layer of sovereignty and strategic autonomy for both companies and governments", so investments are ramping up, with global space investment from venture capital firms reaching $11.3bn in the first six months of 2026, up from $10.1bn for the whole of 2025. Open Cosmos notes that "European governments are treating space systems as core infrastructure, investing in sovereign communications and EO capabilities to reduce reliance on non-European infrastructure and strengthen national and economic security. Governments increasingly need secure satellite communications, Earth observation and real-time operational intelligence without the cost and complexity of building independent space infrastructure. Over the past decade, Open Cosmos has developed the technology needed to create an intelligence layer around Earth where satellites observe, connect and work together to better understand the world." It adds: "For example, an OpenConstellation satellite could detect an unusual increase in temperature over a forest and use onboard AI to identify it as a potential fire. It then relays that intelligence via ConnectedCosmos directly to relevant users, including firefighters or aircraft in the area, even where terrestrial internet is unavailable. The system could task additional satellites and draw on terrestrial IoT sensors to provide further information and cross-check what is happening on the ground. If terrestrial communications were disrupted, ConnectedCosmos could also provide resilient 5G connectivity to teams responding to the emergency. By combining sensing, connectivity and AI into a single system, governments and enterprises can monitor, understand and respond to events on Earth in near real time." Rafel Jorda Siquier, founder and CEO of Open Cosmos, stated: "Space infrastructure is becoming as critical as energy, digital networks and transport. Governments and enterprises increasingly require secure communications and operational data delivered through resilient systems. But infrastructure alone isn't enough. The real value comes from the intelligence that relays what's happening on Earth in real time and the global connectivity to deliver it. By bringing together satellites, secure communications and AI-powered data services, we're creating a system that transforms information from orbit into something that governments and enterprises can act on. This investment allows us to accelerate that vision, satisfying the satellite manufacturing orders that governments and large companies are placing for our reliable and high-performance satellites and delivering the sovereign services the world needs." Meanwhile, European satellite operator SES has expanded its collaboration with Elveo Mobile, the joint venture of Lynk and Omnispace that is backed by SES, to "accelerate delivery of direct-to-device (D2D) services in Europe," it announced. "SES will leverage Elveo's patented, proven and cost-effective D2D technology to enable seamless mobile roaming capabilities for European consumers, businesses, governments, institutional, and defense users," the Luxembourg-based company added. SES and Elveo Mobile will team up to establish manufacturing capabilities and a supply chain in Europe for the production of LEO D2D satellites based on Elveo's "patented D2D satellite bus, payload and software technology stack". Those LEO D2D satellites will "form part of a unique multi-orbit architecture, combining Elveo's LEO D2D network with SES's geostationary (GEO) and medium-earth orbit (MEO) networks capable of delivering secure and reliable connectivity to European governments and institutions, including NATO. European customers also stand to benefit from SES's global distribution of Elveo's D2D services, which use Elveo's high-priority 2 GHz S-band spectrum rights and a global market access footprint currently covering more than 1 billion people," it added. However, no timeline was provided for the deployment of the LEO satellites or the availability of the Elveo-enabled D2D services, with SES's CEO Adel Al-Saleh stating only that "working with our partner Elveo will help bring critical D2D services to European customers on the timeline they demand."
