Requirements

Responsibilities
  • Produce a portfolio ranging from breaking news stories to enterprise, accountability pieces, and scoops, using varied story formats and collaborations to help readers understand the Midwest.
  • Actively seek newsworthy events, identify relevant sources, and conduct thorough research.
  • Write clear, concise, and engaging news stories adhering to journalistic style guidelines.
  • Cultivate a deep source network of authorities, politicians, sheriffs, union representatives, cultural figures, law enforcement personnel, agency representatives, and others.
  • Monitor news and deliver a steady stream of story ideas that explain the region.
  • Write with authority, clarity, and independence.
  • Brainstorm and develop ideas with colleagues across the region and adjacent beats, initiate collaborations, and maintain regular contact with reporters and editors.
  • Demonstrate support for journalistic independence and commitment to the mission of seeking the truth and helping people understand the world.
  • Report to a National Editor.
