No more free PokeCoins from Gyms in Pokemon GO?

No more free PokeCoins from Gyms in Pokemon GO? The Pokemon GO community is left wondering whether Scopely is planning to discontinue free PokeCoins from Gyms after a screenshot went viral on Twitter (now known as X). Following the game's initial launch, where it introduced earning coins from gyms, Pokemon GO brought in the time-based defender bonus on 19th June 2017. The update allowed trainers to earn 1 PokeCoin for every 10 minutes their Pokemon defended a gym. The daily cap was set to 50 PokeCoins. Since then, the game hasn't introduced any changes to the coin-earning system or the daily cap. A recent survey was released by the game, which had a variety of questions regarding how players engage with the in-game gyms. Among the set of questions, 'If you no longer can earn PokeCoins from gyms, how would that affect your gym interactions?' particularly stood out. This has been quite the hot topic among trainers and notable creators of the game. Other than raids, one of the biggest reasons players interact with gyms is to earn PokeCoins, which they use to purchase premium resources, including raid passes. Naturally, disbanding the PokeCoin-earning system from gyms will have a negative impact on gym interactions. Will Last Word On Gaming no longer get free pokecoins from Gyms? While this news has the Pokemon GO community anxious, nothing is certain. Scopely hasn't mentioned anything about eliminating the PokeCoin-earning system from the game. In recent times, Last Word On Gaming has seen Scopely introducing PokeCoins in the passes in the game, both in free and deluxe tiers. Moreover, during the one-day special, Professor Willow's birthday event, Last Word On Gaming saw field research tasks awarding trainers free PokeCoins. While the game has hinted at other ways to earn free PokeCoins, it never hinted at the removal of the PokeCoin-earning system from gyms. The recent Pokemon GO survey could simply be used towards an overall gym rework, as it has been a while since Last Word On Gaming had any changes to the gym system in the game. As the screenshots of the Pokemon GO survey went viral on social media, many trainers took to the comment section on these posts to voice their opinion. Trainers have stated that they have no reason to interact with the gyms at all if the free PokeCoin-earning system is removed. Featured Image Credit Image via Pokemon Press

US casual mobile gaming giants: strategic shifts and market dynamics in 2026.

US casual mobile gaming giants: strategic shifts and market dynamics in 2026. +50 XP gained The US casual mobile gaming market continues to be a battleground of innovation and strategic maneuvering. As the industry matures, major publishers like King, Zynga, Niantic, and Scopely are adapting to evolving player habits and economic shifts. In 2026, the landscape is characterized by increased player spending driving revenue, a surge in hybrid-casual game popularity, and a renewed focus on retention over new installs. Understanding the individual strategies of these titans provides a clear picture of where the mobile gaming world is headed. Amidst these broader trends, each publisher is carving out its path, whether through sustained franchise growth, aggressive acquisitions, or fundamental business model pivots. Their recent activities reflect a dynamic environment where adaptability is key to maintaining market leadership and capturing new opportunities. Market leaders adapt: King's longevity and Zynga's expansion. King, a long-standing powerhouse in casual mobile gaming, continues to demonstrate remarkable longevity with its flagship titles. In March 2026, Farm Heroes Saga officially surpassed $2 billion in revenue, while Pet Rescue Saga has maintained over a decade of success, exceeding $1 billion. This sustained performance is not accidental; King is actively leveraging AI and automation to refine level design and testing, aiming for both higher quality experiences and increased capacity for innovation. Their partnership with Yahoo Games in January 2026 to launch Candy Crush Crushable, a new daily puzzle game, further illustrates their commitment to expanding their reach and adapting to new engagement formats. Zynga, operating as a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive, reported its best-ever quarter of net bookings in Q4 of fiscal year 2026, with mobile net bookings for the full fiscal year reaching $3.3 billion - a 15% year-on-year increase. Their diverse portfolio, including top performers like Toon Blast, Match Factory, and Words With Friends, continues to drive significant revenue. Zynga's strategic moves in 2026 include the April launch of Borderlands Mobile on the App Store and Boggle With Friends on Facebook Instant Games in June. The company also received 10 nominations at the 2026 Mobile Games Awards, highlighting its strong position in the industry, particularly with franchises like CSR 2 and Toon Blast nominated for Best Forever Franchise. Zynga's diversified portfolio and future growth. Zynga's strategy emphasizes a blend of established hits and new ventures. Their nominations for Best Use of IP, particularly for Game of Thrones: Legends and Game of Thrones: Slots x Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, underscore their ability to leverage popular intellectual properties effectively. Looking ahead, Zynga plans to release two mobile titles, NaturalMotion's CSR 3 and Nordeus' Top Goal, in the next financial year, both currently in soft launch, indicating a pipeline of potential future successes. Strategic pivots: Scopely's ascent and Niantic's reorientation. Scopely has rapidly ascended to become a dominant force in the US mobile gaming market, recognized as the #1 U.S. mobile game maker of 2026 by PocketGamer.biz. This growth has been fueled by aggressive acquisitions and the phenomenal success of its flagship titles. In March 2025, Scopely acquired Niantic's gaming division for $3.5 billion, integrating major titles like Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now into its extensive portfolio. This was followed by the acquisition of Istanbul-based Loom Games and a majority stake in 'Pixel Flow!' studio in February 2026, further expanding its development capabilities. A significant driver of Scopely's success is Monopoly Go!, which has surpassed $6 billion in player spending across iOS and Android since its 2023 launch. To extend the game's ecosystem, Scopely launched a standalone Monopoly Go Chat app globally in 2026. The company's strategic investment in Studio AuKnow, a new Japanese game development studio, announced in July 2026, signals its continued global expansion and commitment to fostering new talent. Scopely is also actively producing a new Marvel action RPG, codenamed

Turkish mobile game studio Loom Games hits $1B valuation with Scopely investment

Loom Games, the Turkish developer behind mobile game Pixel Flow, has received investment from Scopely at a $1 billion valuation, becoming Türkiye's seventh unicorn. The studio, founded just one year ago by CEO Kübra Gündoğan and CTO Emre Çelik, launched Pixel Flow in late 2025. The game has since attracted over 10 million players and became the only casual title among the top 20 highest-grossing mobile games in the US over the past 12 months. Loom Games previously completed a seed round with Arcadia Gaming Partners and e2vc. The deal with Scopely, which owns Pokémon Go, Monopoly Go and Stumble Guys, involves a multi-year performance-based structure. Scopely operates under Savvy Games Group, part of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

Why Scopely acquired the Pixel Flow team

Why Scopely acquired the Pixel Flow team. "The combination of creativity and immediate traction is extremely rare with a new game, and we see high potential in this group of game makers" February 19, 2026 Mobile games giant Scopely has acquired a majority stake in Pixel Flow developer Loom Games in a deal that values the business in excess of $1 billion. The deal is based on a performance-based structure. Scopely is getting one of the most successful new game launches over the past year, said to have reached seven-figures in daily revenue from IAPs and ads. It also gives Scopely a foothold in the Türkiye's vibrant games hub, home to a number of top casual mobile games developers and startups that have attracted a wave of investment over the past few years. The move also sees Scopely add a hybridcasual title to its portfolio. "High potential" The innovative title is very early in its lifecycle, having only launched in October 2025. In fact, the studio only just raised seed investment. Revenue for the title has scaled rapidly, though it's not yet had the chance to prove its longevity. "Copycats may appear, but durable player engagement and ongoing innovation are what sustain game experiences." Tim O'Brien Speaking to PocketGamer.biz, Scopely chief revenue officer and board member Tim O'Brien says although the title is early in its lifecycle, it has "delivered some of the strongest engagement metrics we've seen mobile over the past year". "The combination of creativity and immediate traction is extremely rare with a new game, and we see high potential in this group of game makers," he states. "The team also introduced a new core mechanic, underscoring both their inventive mindset and ability to execute at a high level. Coupled with their proven track record on prior titles, we see significant long-term potential in this group of developers. "Our goal is to invest in and support the team over the long-term, helping them achieve their big ambitions. This agreement reflects our continued commitment to partnering with exceptional, world-class game makers and further expanding the Scopely ecosystem." In the casual space in particular, successful new games typically see fast copycats flooding the market from rivals. Competitors are already muscling in on the category, but O'Brien is confident the title can maintain its early success for the long-term. "Pixel Flow's team has already shown they can create something distinctive that engages players daily, and that kind of engagement isn't easily replicated," he says. "Copycats may appear, but durable player engagement and ongoing innovation are what sustain game experiences and that's exactly what this team has demonstrated to date." Breaking into hybridcasual The purchase of Loom Games and Pixel Flow marks another key deal for Scopely, backed by owner Savvy Games Group following its $4.9bn acquisition in 2023. Last year, Scopely snapped up the games team at Niantic for $3.5 billion, bringing location-based titles like Pokémon Go, Pikmin Bloom and Monster Hunter Now into the fold. "The team also expands our presence to Türkiye, one of the most vibrant hubs for mobile game talent." Tim O'Brien The publisher's portfolio includes the $6 billion+ revenue-generating Monopoly Go, as well as titles like Star Trek Fleet Command, Marvel Strike Force, Yahtzee with Buddies Dice, Tiki Solitaire TriPeaks and a number of other titles. "The Pixel Flow team is the exact type of studio we look to invest in and partner with - exceptional game makers with ambitious goals, committed to delivering for players every day," says O'Brien. "The game layers a new casual puzzle experience to our diverse portfolio, bringing key aspects of the hybridcasual genre that players love. The team also expands our presence to Türkiye, one of the most vibrant hubs for mobile game talent, and our partnership will allow us to learn from each other and continue growing together."
