About the job

Requirements
  • At least 7 years of software-building experience, including at least 2–3 years directly leading engineers, while continuing to write and review code.
  • Strong fundamentals in distributed systems and cloud architecture.
  • Recent technical depth, including the ability to explain an architecture designed, a production incident personally diagnosed, and a technical decision that was corrected.
  • A track record of maintaining predictable quality and delivery, with specific examples of how it was managed and its costs.
  • Experience leading a distributed team and maintaining quality and communication across time zones.
  • Fluency with modern AI-assisted development and a clear perspective on where agent-generated code requires human scrutiny.
  • Comfort working in a growing startup environment where capacity and capabilities are being defined, refined, and operationalized.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for internal and external audiences, including calls and in-person engagements.
Responsibilities
  • Build and grow the engineering team responsible for the platform used by state and local governments.
  • Personally investigate complex, ambiguous technical problems, take on engineering work directly, and mentor engineers.
  • Lead, coach, and grow a blended team of employees, contractors, and an offshore agency partner across time zones; run one-on-ones and career coaching, set expectations, manage capacity, and foster collaboration and ownership.
  • Own engineering commitments and delivery, set priorities and realistic dates, unblock the team, surface slippage, and course-correct.
  • Own platform architecture and technical-debt decisions, work with security and compliance leaders, and document tradeoffs and plans for executive decision-making.
  • Set engineering quality standards for code review, testing, deployment safety, and delivery and reliability metrics.
  • Own uptime, incident response, and on-call structure; partner with information security and compliance on the audited security and compliance posture.
  • Champion AI tools such as Claude and Cursor, define agent-use and review standards, set quality requirements for agent-produced code, and measure output.
  • Partner with Product, Delivery/Implementation, Customer Experience, and Solutions to translate priorities into engineering plans and explain engineering constraints to colleagues and government customers.
  • Interview and assess engineering candidates, help set the technical hiring bar, and plan, forecast, and manage team capacity.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience at an early-to-mid-stage startup.
  • Experience in GovTech, public-sector SaaS, or another regulated and audited environment, such as FedRAMP, StateRAMP, SOC 2, or HIPAA.
  • Experience building or scaling an offshore engineering function.
  • Based in the San Francisco Bay Area or Washington, DC.

About the company

Authorium offers a cloud-based software platform that automates and streamlines administrative tasks for government agencies. It handles document-centric workflows across procurement, contracting, policy and HR management, and grant administration, bringing these processes into one unified system from start to finish. The product is delivered as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) for public sector clients, enabling agencies to manage workflows and documents securely online. What sets Authorium apart is its explicit focus on unifying multiple government-specific workflows in a single platform, designed to fit procurement and grant management needs of public agencies rather than generic enterprise tools. The company’s goal is to help government entities modernize their operations, improve efficiency, and scale administrative functions as part of public administration modernization.

What believers are saying

  • Authorium raised $8 million in April 2025, funding hiring and product development.
  • Amy Tong joined August 2026, strengthening California-to-national government procurement expansion.
  • Chi-Kai Chien joined March 2026, signaling engineering investment after FedRAMP High certification.

What critics are saying

  • Federal procurement cycles stay slow; revenue depends on budget approvals and long sales periods.
  • Carahsoft contract entries show key public-sector channels, but renewals expire in 2025-2027.
  • If AWS GovCloud or FedRAMP processes slip, Authorium loses its core security advantage.

What makes Authorium unique

  • FedRAMP High authorization gives Authorium rare credibility for sensitive federal workflows.
  • AWS GovCloud hosting and NIST 800-53 controls separate it from generic SaaS vendors.
  • Authorium focuses narrowly on procurement, grants, and contracts across government operations.
