GM stock jumps 15% in a week on Nasdaq switch and hybrid SUV pivot

General Motors shares rose 15% in a week after the carmaker said it will move its listing to Nasdaq from November 17. The Nasdaq Composite fell 2% over the same period. GM is the first legacy automaker on the exchange. The move makes it eligible for the Nasdaq-100, which would force index funds to buy the stock. The company also plans hybrid versions of its three-row SUVs and will prepare its Lansing Delta Township plant for hybrid production. This follows $7.4 billion of EV-related cash charges. GM expects tariffs to cost the low end of $2.5 billion to $3.5 billion this year, against guidance of about $15 billion in adjusted EBIT. It trades at about 6x forward earnings and has a new $20 billion buyback authorisation. Its 2027 outlook is due in late January.

Truck buyer bought a 2024 Silverado - and got slapped with a cracked oil cooler and a massive lawsuit.

Truck buyer bought a 2024 Silverado - and got slapped with a cracked oil cooler and a massive lawsuit. When you spend north of $80,000 on a heavy-duty diesel truck built for extreme towing, you expect bulletproof reliability. What you don't expect is for the manufacturer to slap passenger-car components onto a heavy-duty block to save a few pennies on the assembly line. General Motors is currently in the crosshairs of a massive class-action lawsuit (Hubof v. General Motors, LLC, Case No. 2:26-cv-13622), filed in the Eastern District of Michigan on September 24, 2026. The lawsuit claims that the Gen 2 L5P Duramax engines in 2024-2026 Silverado and Sierra 2500HD/3500HD trucks have a catastrophic oil cooler defect. The cooler's internal walls are reportedly cracking under pressure, allowing high-pressure engine oil to blast directly into the cooling system. Automotive YouTuber JB Reviews, who owns a 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD AT4X, recently broke down the terrifying reality of the failure. According to a GM service update he reviewed on the channel, dealership technicians are being instructed to open the surge tanks on these trucks and look for a "film of oily black substance floating on top of the coolant". If the truck is contaminated, the official GM fix is a rigorous 11-hour job to replace all the coolant hoses, swap the surge tank, and flush the system. However, they aren't fixing the actual root cause of the explosion. The V6 oil filter theory. While GM has yet to officially declare exactly why the heavy-duty oil coolers are cracking, the automotive community believes they found the smoking gun. According to an internal tip sent to JB Reviews, the engine oil cooler design did not change between the reliable 2023 Duramax and the failing 2024 models. What did change was the oil filter. GM reportedly switched from the high-flow PF26 filter used in 2023 to a smaller PF63 filter for the 2024 models. The PF63 is the exact same oil filter GM uses on its standard V6 passenger car engines. "You're telling me that a V6 engine is using the same oil filter as my truck that has almost 1,000 pound-feet of torque?" the YouTuber asked in disbelief. Diesel mechanics speculate that running heavy-weight diesel oil through a highly restrictive V6 passenger car filter creates a massive pressure bottleneck. Because the oil cooler is machined right next to the filter, that trapped pressure has nowhere to go, ultimately fracturing the thin metal walls of the cooler. "This engine costs probably double what a V6 engine would cost. I should have a better filter," he stated. The dealership band-aid. According to the new class-action lawsuit, GM dealerships are allegedly denying full engine replacements to affected owners, blaming the failure on "low oil levels" once the cooler cracks. Instead of replacing the compromised engines, dealers are simply slapping on a replacement cooler of the exact same flawed design, flushing the contaminated coolant, and sending buyers back out onto the road to inevitably fail again. Because GM is allegedly refusing to buy back the contaminated trucks or issue full crate engines, owners are joining the class action to demand proper compensation and extended warranties. As for JB Reviews, he made his stance perfectly clear to his local dealership. "I'm not getting new coolant lines; I'm not doing it. You're going to get me a new engine," he declared, noting that GM's cost-cutting is not his problem to bear.

Stocktwits zero to sixty: Rivian raises delivery guidance on R2 demand, Tesla expands robotaxi fleet, and Ford advances low-cost EV plans. Published: Oct 31 2026, 06:05 AM IST * FB * TW * Linkdin * Whatsapp * GNFollow Us Pure-EV player Rivian delivered a clear third-quarter beat and raised its 2026 delivery outlook on the back of early R2 strength, while sector giant Tesla's robotaxi fleet in Texas tipped toward a Cybercab majority. * Rivian raised its full-year 2026 delivery outlook to 67,000-70,000 vehicles from 65,000-70,000 and improved its adjusted core guidance by $100 million at the midpoint. * EV giant Tesla, meanwhile, continued expanding its robotaxi service this week, with Cybercabs now accounting for a majority of the company's authorized fleet in Texas. * General Motors, meanwhile, is looking to develop hybrid versions of its high-volume three-row SUVs in the U.S. - the Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave, and GMC Acadia, Reuters reported. This week's EV spotlight swung firmly to Rivian, which stole the show with a stronger-than-expected third-quarter beat powered by its new R2 SUV - outshining Tesla's steady robotaxi rollout and the more incremental affordable-EV updates from legacy names like Ford. Rivian delivers record quarter as R2 leads sales; hikes full-year delivery guidance. Rivian reported third-quarter revenue of $2.16 billion, up 38% year over year and ahead of consensus estimates near $1.99 billion. The adjusted loss narrowed to $0.48 per share, better than the roughly $0.56 loss analysts had projected. The company raised its full-year 2026 delivery outlook to 67,000-70,000 vehicles from 65,000-70,000 and narrowed its full-year adjusted core loss guidance by $100 million at the midpoint, while lowering expected capital expenditures outlook to $1.4 billion-$1.5 billion. The hike in delivery outlook is driven by the strong demand for the company's new R2 SUV, deliveries of which began in June. The company now expects R2 to represent the majority of total delivery volume in the fourth quarter and has added a second shift at its plant in Illinois to scale production. CEO RJ Scaringe said Rivian remains on track to hit an autonomy milestone by year-end that would unlock a $250 million tranche of Uber's planned investment. The Volkswagen joint venture continued to contribute meaningful software revenue in the third quarter, and the first EV model from the joint venture will launch next year in Europe incorporating technology from Rivian. Tesla robotaxi fleet grows; Cybercabs surpass Model Ys in Texas. EV giant Tesla, meanwhile, continued expanding its robotaxi service this week. Earlier this week, Texas Department of Motor Vehicles data showed 1,051 authorized vehicles in the company's robotaxi fleet, with 544 purpose-built Cybercabs now outnumbering 507 Model Ys. The crossover marks a clear shift from earlier in October, when Model Ys still outnumbered the dedicated robotaxi vehicle. Separately, Italy signaled support for broader European Union approval of Tesla's Full Self-Driving software aimed at automating several aspects of driving. While individual European Union countries have approved FSD, an EU-wide approval is pending, with Tesla previously pegging it for early 2027. Ford advances affordable EV. Ford CEO Jim Farley said testing of the company's upcoming sub-$30,000 Fathom midsize electric pickup "completely blew me away," citing its capabilities and low cost of ownership. The vehicle remains on track for a late-2027 launch, with production of large aluminum unicastings advancing and a new bidirectional charging system designed to reduce home-power costs. Ford also reiterated its longer-term EV financial targets, still aiming for Model e breakeven by 2029, while reporting improved results from its Model e unit. In Q3 2026, Model e posted an EBIT loss of approximately $1.06-$1.1 billion on revenue of $1.2 billion. That marked a roughly 25% improvement from the $1.41 billion loss in the year-ago quarter. GM advances hybrid SUV plans. General Motors, meanwhile, is looking to develop hybrid versions of its high-volume three-row SUVs in the U.S. - the Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave, and GMC Acadia, Reuters reported. The company confirmed that it is preparing its Lansing Delta Township Assembly Plant for future hybrid production without providing details on timing or final nameplate details. The move marks a notable shift for an automaker that had largely prioritized pure battery-electric vehicles and previously offered only a Corvette hybrid in the U.S. Hybrids have gained share amid elevated gasoline prices, while GM's U.S. market share has slipped. While RIVN clocked 3% this week, TSLA gained 7%, GM 15% and F about 6%. On Stocktwits, sentiment around RIVN stock jumped from 'neutral' to 'extremely bullish' over the past week, while sentiment around GM slumped from 'extremely bullish' to 'bearish.' Sentiment around TSLA stayed unmoved at 'bearish' levels, while sentiment around F stock stayed 'neutral' in the meantime. Tariffs, diesel and chips add about $2B in costs each for GM and Ford this year

General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis reported higher revenue this quarter, driven by sales of big cars and trucks. But rising costs for steel, copper, computer chips, and diesel are squeezing them. GM and Ford each expect these costs, which some companies label "commodity and logistics," to add about $2 billion this year. Analysts say the term largely stands in for tariffs and inflation. EV sales have fallen since the federal tax credit ended, though GM says it is not giving up on them. Hybrid sales are up almost 27%, according to Edmunds. Meanwhile, Exxon doubled its earnings and Chevron's rose 180%, as wars in Iran and Ukraine disrupted oil supply.

GM pays $220M to settle driver data-selling claims with 35 states and DC

General Motors has agreed to pay $220 million to settle allegations that it collected drivers' data without proper consent and sold it to data brokers. A coalition of 35 states and the District of Columbia brought the case, the Washington attorney general's office said on Thursday. Investigators said GM sold location, speed, and seatbelt data from its Smart Driver program to brokers, which supplied insurers that could use it to set premiums. GM also incentivised dealerships to enrol customers, and its OnStar app wrongly told more than 370,000 drivers they were not enrolled. GM also agreed to limit the data it collects, better protect personal information, and set up a data privacy program. California reached a separate $12.75 million settlement in May, and a Texas case continues.
