About the job
- A high school diploma or GED is required.
- Graduation from a Medical Assistant program is required, or eligibility for certification by the American Medical Technologists, American Association of Medical Assistants, National Healthcareer Association, or National Association for Health Professionals within 12 months of hire.
- A Registered Medical Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, or Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant credential is required within 12 months of hire.
- Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support/CPR certification is required within 30 days of hire, and required credentials must be maintained.
- Six months of medical assistant experience or completion of a medical assistant externship is required.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain good communication and establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees, physicians, patients, families, and the public is required.
- Working knowledge of ICD-9/10 and Current Procedural Terminology coding and insurance procedures is required.
- Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends, float to other clinic practices as needed, and follow a predetermined schedule is required.
- Deliver appropriate patient care at a proficient level and cross-train to care for patients across multiple services and specialties.
- Review patient charts before scheduled appointments to verify that requested laboratory work and diagnostic procedures are complete and accessible to the provider.
- Review, obtain, and record patient vital signs, reason for visit, and other clinical information using the Electronic Medical Record according to guidelines.
- Perform patient access tasks, including taking messages and assisting providers with return calls to patients and pharmacies.
- Direct patients to examination rooms, prepare them for examinations, notify providers of patient arrival and readiness, and assist with examinations and procedures.
- Operate and monitor clinical equipment, hand instruments to providers, conduct hearing, vision, breathing, and electrocardiogram testing, and record results in patient charts.
- Administer medications as directed using the seven rights, perform venipuncture, collect urine specimens, and complete laboratory testing procedures while handling specimens using Universal Precautions.
- Recognize and respond appropriately to emergency situations, monitor patients during and after procedures, identify reactions or complications, and notify the appropriate person of medical emergencies.
- Ensure safe care for patients, staff, and visitors while following organizational policies, procedures, standards, time-management, supply-management, productivity, and service-quality requirements.
- Complete mandatory and continuing education and skills competency requirements, support department goals, and serve as a preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff.
- Provide compassionate, personalized, safe, and efficient experiences to patients and colleagues in accordance with service standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Specialty clinic experience is preferred.
- For urgent care locations, previous phlebotomy experience is preferred.

Memorial Hermann Health System clinicians are using Epic's AI tool, Art, to help patients better understand their test results. The AI-powered assistant generates initial draft patient notes in clear, patient-friendly language as clinicians review lab and imaging results. Since implementation, patients have sent 32% fewer follow-up messages about test results when clinicians used Art's draft. The tool has helped Memorial Hermann's care teams write over 55,000 messages to patients, with clinicians saving an average of nine seconds per result comment. Memorial Hermann piloted the feature in December 2025 in their innovation clinic before expanding system-wide.
