About the company

Tesla makes electric cars and batteries that store power for homes and utilities, and it develops self-driving software and humanoid robots. In 2023, its Model Y became the first electric vehicle to rank as the world's best-selling car. Buyers order the Model 3 sedan, Model Y SUV, or Cybertruck pickup directly from Tesla instead of through dealers, and they charge on its Supercharger fast-charging network. It also sells Megapack and Powerwall batteries, runs a robotaxi service, and charges drivers a monthly fee for self-driving software that still needs their supervision. Tesla was founded in 2003, with Elon Musk as its lead early investor and a recognized co-founder, and it is based in Austin, Texas.

  • Software adds income beyond cars: paid users of its supervised self-driving feature rose 56% to 1.48 million by June 2026.

  • Robots are written into Musk's pay: his 2025 award sets goals of 1 million humanoid robots and 1 million robotaxis.

Tesla ramps up Megapack output as 2027 supply nearly sells out on AI data centre demand

Tesla is raising Megapack output "as much as possible" because orders have nearly sold out its 2027 capacity, chief executive officer Elon Musk said on Thursday. He pointed to strong demand from AI data centres. In the third quarter, Tesla deployed 13.7 GWh of energy storage, its second-best quarter on record. Energy revenue was $2.88 billion, down 16% year-over-year, partly due to tariff-related customer refunds. Gross margin rose to 33.1% from 20.4% in the second quarter. The company reported its highest-ever order rate and backlog for storage products. Its new Texas Megafactory began production in the quarter, with planned annual capacity of 50 GWh. With sites in California and Shanghai, combined capacity is roughly 110 GWh.

World's six richest lose $130B as AI spending fears hit tech stocks

The world's six richest people lost a combined $130 billion on Thursday as tech stocks fell on renewed doubts about returns on AI infrastructure spending. Elon Musk lost $74 billion, bringing his net worth to $914.7 billion, as SpaceX shares sank nearly 9%. Investors weighed a $35 billion cash-flow gap and Musk's confirmation that SpaceX is considering a merger with Tesla. Tesla fell 2%, after it cut its full-year capital expenditure guidance to $20 billion from over $25 billion. Mark Zuckerberg lost $18 billion as Meta fell 8%. The company raised the low end of its capital spending forecast by $5 billion, to $135 billion to $145 billion. Jeff Bezos lost $11 billion as Amazon fell nearly 5%. Larry Page and Sergey Brin lost a combined $15 billion, and Michael Dell lost $12 billion as Dell Technologies dropped 7%.

Speculation of a merger is growing after the formation of a special committee for the deal. A combined company would hold 30,221 bitcoin and rank sixth among public companies in bitcoin holdings.

Ives stays bullish on Tesla ($500 target) and Meta ($900) as AI payoffs diverge

Wedbush analyst Dan Ives stays bullish on Tesla and Meta Platforms after their latest earnings, though the two cases are diverging. Tesla shares fell after hours despite a modest beat, while Meta rose. Tesla reported revenue of $28.05 billion, roughly flat year over year, and adjusted earnings of $0.48 per share against a $0.45 estimate. Operating expenses jumped 39% as it spends on AI, autonomy, and robotics. Meta's revenue rose 26% to $64.60 billion, beating consensus. Average ad prices rose 14%, which suggests its AI spending is helping the core advertising business. Ives rates Tesla Outperform with a $500 price target and Meta at $900, each implying roughly 29% upside. He sees an 80% to 90% chance that Tesla and SpaceX merge by the end of 2027.

Futures slide as Brent tops $112, French yields pass 5% and Big Tech earnings disappoint

Global markets turned risk-averse on October 22 as oil prices hit their highest level since May and French bond yields jumped again. US stock index futures fell sharply, pulling Treasury yields down. Brent crude rose another 3% to more than $112 per barrel, with no sign of a breakthrough in the Iran and Ukraine wars. French 10-year yields topped 5%, and the premium over German debt widened to 165 basis points, the widest since 2011. Investors worry about a stalled budget and a possible credit rating downgrade as soon as Friday. Early Big Tech earnings were mixed. Meta beat revenue estimates but reported negative free cash flow of $2 billion, its first cash burn in over a decade, and its shares fell 3%. Tesla slipped 5% after its capex and car sales targets to 2030 fell short of forecasts. Super Micro gave back half of its 10% gain.
