From Melbourne to 190 countries: Heidi named Best in Tech's AI Gamechanger of the Year.

From Melbourne to 190 countries: Heidi named Best in Tech's AI Gamechanger of the Year. AI healthcare platform Heidi took home two top honours in the Startup Daily Best in Tech Awards. AI medical scribe Heidi began with a simple premise: free up doctors from time-consuming admin to spend more time with patients. What followed was rapid growth across the globe, outpacing every other startup in Blackbird Ventures' portfolio, including Canva. Over the past 18 months, the company has grown from US$15 million to approximately US$50 million in annual recurring revenue, closed a $98 million Series B led by Point72, and expanded its team to almost 500. In October 2025, the company's value was reported to be $703 million, on target for a potential $1 billion valuation in the future. "This is a Melbourne startup gone global," says Dr Simon Kos, Heidi's chief medical officer. "Right now we're in 190 countries, we're in 110 languages and we're doing 2.8 million notes a week, which makes us the world's biggest scribe by volume." They did that in just three years. Get the best of Startup Daily straight to your inbox. That reach, and its impact on clinicians and patients, helped Heidi take out two awards at the Startup Daily Best in Tech Awards 2026: AI Gamechanger, presented by The Nudge Group, and Scaleup of the Year, presented by AWS Startups. The AI Gamechanger award celebrates a startup or scaleup using artificial intelligence to deliver practical and impactful AI applications that solve real-world problems. It's an achievement that Kos says marks only the beginning of Heidi's journey. "There's a quiet revolution going on in healthcare, and it means better care for people all around the globe," he told Startup Daily. More time on patients, not paperwork. No doctor went into medicine to spend hours charting and compiling patient notes. Yet a 2025 survey found nearly a third of Australian GPs were experiencing burnout, while doctors reported spending an average of 15% of their day on administrative tasks. It was a problem Heidi cofounder Dr Thomas Kelly knew firsthand. Throughout his medical career, he watched colleagues leave the profession under the weight of administrative work, high patient volumes and mounting pressure on an already stretched system. Heidi is designed to take some of that work out of the consultation, capturing conversations and turning them into clinical notes and other documentation so doctors can spend more time focused on their patients. Rather than asking clinicians to fundamentally change how they work, the platform sits around the consultation. Tools such as Heidi Evidence can also surface relevant medical evidence during an appointment, giving doctors access to information at the point it is needed. Crossing the AI barrier. Healthcare has been slower than many industries to embrace AI, largely because the stakes are so high. "Healthcare is an incredibly conservative industry with low levels of digitisation and really sensitive data, and if you get it wrong, patients' lives are on the line," Dr Kos explains. Heidi has tackled that sensitivity with safeguards including pseudonymisation and by keeping its core technology in-house. "One of the hardest things was to get artificial intelligence used in healthcare, and we crossed that barrier," Kos says. By owning its full stack, Heidi can keep greater control over patient data and deploy its technology directly within hospital systems, rather than relying on third-party models. Next, Dr Kos says the company is looking beyond transcription towards a more integrated product, where a single patient interaction could trigger actions such as referrals and follow-ups. Doubling the world's healthcare capacity. Independent pilots across Australian healthcare settings found Heidi returned an average of 59 minutes of capacity to clinicians each day. For Dr Kos, that is only the beginning. "[We're] on a mission to double the world's healthcare capacity by 2030," he said. The ambition comes as healthcare systems around the world grapple with rising demand and limited clinical capacity. Heidi's bet is that AI can help close some of that gap by giving clinicians more time to see and care for patients. Already, the technology has been implemented across major Australian health services including the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne and Queensland's Children's Health Service. In New Zealand, Heidi was approved as one of two AI healthcare providers approved for public health use before being rolled out across emergency departments nationwide. For Dr Kos, the bigger story is what that growth means for doctors and patients. "It's not just another story of, 'Oh, we're a successful business,'" he says. "We are actually changing people's lives. You've got clinicians that are able to see more patients." Thank you to the Startup Daily Best in Tech Awards 2026 partners:

Heidi, sitehive, the Laundry lady, and UNSW Founders among 15 winners at the Startup Daily Best in Tech Awards 2026.

Heidi, sitehive, the Laundry lady, and UNSW Founders among 15 winners at the Startup Daily Best in Tech Awards 2026. AI dominated Startup Daily's 2026 Best in Tech Awards as Heidi bagged two wins and women founders surged. Artificial intelligence featured prominently in the this year's Startup Daily Best in Tech Awards, with Heidi, the AI health platform helping doctors track patient interactions globally, taking home two awards. The sold out awards dinner with 220 guests heard from entrepreneur turned federal MP Allegra Spender who discussed risk and purpose in building startups in Australia. ""Startups are about two things - it's taking a big risk, and that's a big cost for people, when they give up a job or to say, 'I want to create something different'," she said. "But if you want to take that risk, it's about a purpose, and that's what's been so inspiring about so many of the awards finalists and winners - the positive change they want to create in the world is amazing." Heidi took home Scaleup of the Year and the AI Gamechanger awards. AI also featured prominently with Annie Liao, founder of Build Club, the global AI community, named Future Leader, and 1000 Women in AI, founded by Emma Earley, winning the GSD Award. Having launched 1000 Women in AI, a free program, while heavily pregnant with her second child, Earley reached her goal in just two weeks and is now has a target of 1 million women. Get the best of Startup Daily straight to your inbox. She said the GSD Award "means a lot for all of those women that are at home on parental leave thinking, how do I get back in the workplace? How do I build a startup? It's totally possible, but more importantly, it recognises that we want to see the gender gap in AI closed and not a thing." Once again, women featured prominently in the fourth annual Best in Tech awards, with 2025 winner Paz Pisarski, founder of the The Community Collective named Industry Champion, while Ovum AI founder Dr Ariella Heffernan-Marks was named Best New Founder. Heidi Health's Dr Simon Kos said the Scaleup of the Year award was recognition for the three years of hard work towards their ambition to double the world's healthcare capacity by 2030. "This is a Melbourne startup gone global. Right now we're in 190 countries, we're in 110 languages, and we're doing 2.8 million notes a week, which makes us the world's biggest scribe by volume," he said. "There's a quiet revolution going on in healthcare, and it means better care for people all around the globe." AWS Startups were once again the major sponsor, having supported the Best in Tech Awards since they began in 2023. Christian Hernandez, senior startup partner, AWS Startups, said it was important to celebrate the achievements of the local ecosystem, and the Best in Tech awards created an incredible buzz. "No one really sees the hard work that goes into being in a startup, and building your own business and struggling and fighting every single day," he said "You forget where you have come from and what type of achievement that you're able to come with. And to be celebrated by all your peers, that's amazing. I think that we bat above our weight as Australians. We're the true underdog story, but we do achieve so many things because we just keep going and we always have that instinct to keep pushing on. And that's, that's great." The Startup Daily Best in Tech Awards were also supported by Tank Stream Labs, Nudge Group, The Founders Union and The Pillars. Here is the full list of the 15 winners from the Startup Daily Best in Tech Awards 2026: Heidi - Scaleup of the Year. A pile of washing became a tech-powered business spanning four countries and more than 600 Laundry Partners. Our winner, founded by Queensland entrepreneur Susan Toft turned one of life's dullest chores into a scalable marketplace. Annie Liao, Build Club - Future Leader of the Year. What began as a community for people curious about AI has grown into a global network helping tens of thousands learn, build and launch as Annie Liao built Build Cub and took it global. 1000 Women in AI - The GSD Award. Emma Earley set out to help 1,000 women get confident with AI. She did it while in the last trimester of her pregnancy, hit that target in just two weeks and kept going. 1000 Women in AI is free, practical and deliberately anti-hype, and now getting more women into the rooms where AI's future is being shaped. Royal Wolverhampton and Walsall Healthcare select preferred AVT.

Royal Wolverhampton and Walsall Healthcare select preferred AVT. September 11, 2026 7:18 am The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust have announced Heidi as their preferred supplier for ambient voice technology following a "successful pilot of the solution in a number of departments". The eight month pilot introduced the technology across the Walsall Healthcare emergency department, medical same day emergency care, dermatology, ENT and audiology, as well as obstetrics and gynaecology. Here, clinicians used Heidi's solution to generate structured clinical notes from patient consultations, reviewing and approving prior to their addition to the patient record. Findings showed that the solution worked to reduce clinician documentation time to less than four minutes per patient over the pilot phase. Jamil Aslam, lead for quality improvement and AVT at Walsall Healthcare, said: "By using ambient voice technology responsibly, we have been able to reduce the time staff spend on documentation and give them more time with the people who matter most - our patients." Roll out of the technology is set to begin across emergency departments and outpatient specialties at both trusts, with plans for it to be live in all areas by 2028, the trusts note. Simon Evans, group deputy chief executive and chief strategy officer, spoke of the trusts' commitment to adopting innovative digital solutions to improve the patient experience, adding: "The implementation of ambient voice technology will support our clinicians to deliver patient care by reducing the administrative burden, giving them back more time during a consultation to focus on each patient's needs." Wider trend: AVT Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust has begun its rollout of Lyrebird Health AVT, initially in the emergency department, gastroenterology, and gynaecology outpatients. The trust has been working in partnership with other South West London trusts and the SWL Acute Provider Collaborative to introduce AVT, the board noted earlier this year. A second phase of the rollout is also planned, to include more outpatient specialties and community services, followed by other clinical areas, Kingston and Richmond shares. Deployment is being coordinated with partner organisations across the region to promote consistency in approach. Digital Health and Care Wales is launching a £10 million open framework agreement for AVT solutions, aiming to support the adoption of tech to improve clinical documentation processes. The agreement is intended to maintain a "pre-qualified list" of AVT suppliers, who will have to meet conditions enabling their participation and achieve a minimum evaluation threshold. According to DHCW, AVT solutions could include ambient voice capture, speech-to-text transcription, generative AI summarisation, suggested structured clinical coding, intelligent summarisation, automated template population, review and approval workflows, integration with GP systems, and insights and reporting. The Health Services Safety Investigations Body (HSSIB) has launched an investigation into the use of AVT in hospitals, following engagement with stakeholders including representatives from national bodies that highlighted potential safety issues. The investigation looks to explore the ways in which the use of AVT has contributed, or may contribute to, patient harm, along with the wider patient safety risks of its use, and how accountability for AVT safety is understood on a local and national level. According to HSSIB, it will use a specific analysis framework developed for generic AI systems to make its assessment.
