Detroit fire trucks start preemption pilot.

Detroit fire trucks start preemption pilot. Reading Time: 2 mins read Miovision has launched a pilot programme with the Detroit Fire Department and Haas Alert to test cloud-based emergency vehicle preemption technology in the US city. The 90-day pilot in Detroit, in the US state of Michigan, will operate across five signalised intersections in the Transportation Innovation Zone in the city's Corktown area. The Detroit Fire Department installed Miovision's Opticom Cloud EVP Platform, which uses cloud, GPS and cellular connectivity to signal traffic lights along a fire truck's entire route. The system informs the traffic controllers to change their current phases - red, yellow, green - to clear each intersection ahead of the approaching vehicle. This clears the way for first responders to safely cross while giving drivers and road users time to slow down and move over. With the level of average urban emergency response times in the US having reached seven minutes, minutes matter. Survival rates drop. Research shows survival rates for critical emergencies drop by up to 10% for every minute care is delayed. This pilot aims to give first responders a green light upon intersection arrival to reduce response times by up to 25% and reduce the risk of emergency vehicle crashes by up to 70%. "Thanks to the Detroit Fire Department, we're proving that cloud-based preemption is deployable without costly new infrastructure and scalable to cities of any size," said Kurtis McBride, CEO of Miovision. Fire trucks are already equipped with Haas Alert safety devices that transmit real-time vehicle location data. Those signals travel through the Haas system to the MiovisionOne Cloud platform, which requests emergency vehicle preemption from the traffic controllers at each of the five pilot intersections. Because the system integrates with existing infrastructure, it requires no new in-vehicle or roadside hardware, giving cities a practical path to modernising emergency response.

Are you going to make that green light? A new, Kitchener-made traffic light technology has the answer.

Are you going to make that green light? A new, Kitchener-made traffic light technology has the answer. New traffic light technology is a stepping stone to autonomous driving, according to Miovision. Lauren Kuivenhoven · CBC News · Posted: Sep 01, 2026 3:00 AM PDT | Last Updated: 4 hours ago Estimated 3 minutes If you've ever found yourself second guessing whether you should speed up to make a green light, a new traffic light technology in Kitchener may help. Kitchener-based company Miovision, a global intelligence transportation system vendor, launched vehicle to everything (V2X) in the city a few months ago. It's a technology that connects traffic light information to cars, and lets drivers know when a light is going to be red or green by displaying a traffic light icon on the vehicle's dashboard. "Knowing what the signal is doing reduces your stress level dramatically... I know I don't need to rush because it's not going to do me any good," said Thomas Bauer, the vice president of V2X at Miovision. The traffic icon provides a countdown to green, the speed a driver must stay at to make a green light and a warning about when the light will turn red. Bauer says if a driver is going over the speed limit, the display will disappear. The countdown to a green light will disappear four seconds before the light changes, "just to make sure that you are now looking out the window," said Bauer. He says the technology is meant as a driving assist for now, although it's a stepping stone toward autonomous driving. Bauer says the technology offers both safety and environmental benefits. He says it's especially valuable for heavy vehicles. "They have a much longer braking distance. For them to know in advance if they're going to make a signal or not, this can be life or death." Bauer says knowing when to stop allows vehicles to save on fuel consumption, because they have more information on when to slow down for a traffic light. Miovision started out by counting cars to help with transportation planning, and expanded to emergency vehicle pre-emption, which modifies the traffic signal to allow emergency vehicle or public transit through an intersection. Now the company has launched V2X in Kitchener, which allows data from traffic lights to flow into vehicles over a cellular network. "Kitchener is one of these cities in Canada where we have most of our equipment deployed. It's now available, I would say about 90 per cent of the intersections here," said Bauer. According to the Region of Waterloo, Miovision technology has been connected to traffic lights across the region since 2020. In an emailed statement to CBC News, the region says the system uses cameras and other detection devices that are connected to the traffic signal controller. Data is retrieved about cyclists, pedestrians and vehicles to "optimize the operation of the traffic signals," said the statement, in part. WATCH | Kitchener-made tech connects cars to traffic light grid: Kitchener-made tech connects cars to traffic light grid 4 hours ago| 4:22 Miovision launched V2X in Kitchener a few months ago, a technology that connects traffic light information to cars. It lets drivers know when the light will turn red or green. Thomas Bauer, the vice president of V2X at Miovision, showed CBC K-W's Lauren Kuivenhoven how the technology works. With the new V2X technology, Bauer says instead of just collecting data about cars and intersections, the cars will be able to also receive data from the traffic lights. "This is basically the reverse data flow. Instead of into the signal, it's from the signal back to the driver to influence the vehicle," said Bauer. V2X currently covers more than 70,000 intersections across eight countries. It's available in VW Group cars, such as Audi, Bently and Porsche. Bauer says drivers can also download an app to connect the technology to their car, if they don't have a car brand from VW Group. Lauren Kuivenhoven is a reporter at CBC K-W. Miovision launches AI platform to streamline traffic engineering & network management.

Miovision launches AI platform to streamline traffic engineering & network management. Joey Stoate Published: 12 Aug 2026 Miovision has announced the launch of a brand-new artificial intelligence-powered platform that aims to modernise how transportation agencies conduct traffic studies, analyse roadway performance, and manage signalised intersections. The Traffic Studies for Miovision One platform aims to combine temporary traffic study workflows and permanent intersection management into one single system, allowing engineers to collect, analyse and act on transportation data without the transfer of information between multiple applications. The new platform aims to streamline traffic engineering and network management (C) Miovision By consolidating these functions into one platform; Miovision aims to reduce the time spent on administrative processes and allow transportation professionals to focus on potential improvements. One of the platform's key functions, Mateo, serves as Miovision's own generative AI assistant, and has been specifically designed for traffic engineering applications. It is allegedly capable of answering questions about individual studies, summarising findings, identifying anomalies, generating reports, and providing engineering insights based on millions of traffic observations. The use of domain-specific AI is intended to distinguish the growing class of transportation technologies from more general-purpose artificial intelligence tools, with AI assistants trained on transportation workflows instead of requiring engineers to manually interpret large datasets. This allows for the rapid identification of patterns and recommendations whilst, in theory, reducing repetitive analytical tasks. Kurtis McBride, Miovision Chief Executive Officer, said: Until now, data from temporary traffic studies has remained separate from Intelligent Transportation System solutions. Traffic Studies for Miovision One brings temporary and permanent traffic data together on a single platform, helping agencies make faster, better-informed decisions across their network. The platform's unified architecture also aims to address existing challenges for transportation agencies, such as the integration of data collected during temporary field studies with the continuous stream of information generated by permanent intelligent transportation system (ITS) infrastructure. By bringing these datasets together, the platform seeks to provide engineers with a more comprehensive understanding of network performance whilst enabling more consistent, data-driven planning.
