Etsy cuts 220 jobs despite Q2 sales rising 9.3% and raising full-year outlook

Etsy is cutting approximately 220 jobs, or 12% of its workforce, despite improving sales figures. The e-commerce company announced the restructuring alongside second-quarter results showing progress in its recovery efforts. Most reductions will affect Product & Engineering teams. CEO Kruti Patel Goyal said the restructuring aims to eliminate organisational silos and create flatter teams, not to cut costs. Etsy expects to record roughly $35 million in restructuring charges, primarily for severance and employee benefits. Affected staff will receive at least 16 weeks' severance pay, with additional compensation based on tenure. The announcement comes as Etsy's core marketplace shows recovery signs. Second-quarter gross merchandise sales reached $2.6 billion, up 7.5% year-on-year, whilst revenue totalled $668 million. The company raised its full-year outlook, expecting mid-single-digit growth in marketplace sales.

Etsy beats Q2 estimates with $668M revenue, up 6.2% amid AI investment push

Etsy reported second-quarter results for CY2026 that exceeded Wall Street expectations, with revenue rising 6.2% year on year to $668.3 million. The online marketplace's non-GAAP earnings of $1.31 per share beat analyst estimates by 11.6%. CEO Kruti Patel Goyal attributed the performance to improved marketplace fundamentals, including growth in active buyers and stronger mobile app engagement. The company's operating margin expanded to 18.7%, up from 15% in the prior-year quarter. Looking ahead, management plans to focus on driving mid-single-digit gross merchandise sales growth through investments in artificial intelligence, product discovery, and marketing targeting younger buyers. CFO Lanny Baker emphasised ongoing organisational restructuring to support faster execution whilst maintaining the company's profit margin profile. Despite beating estimates, the market response was negative, reflecting investor concerns over ongoing marketplace dynamics.

Etsy cuts 12% of workforce, authorises $2B share buyback amid buyer growth pressure

Etsy is cutting approximately 12% of its workforce—around 220 positions—whilst authorising a $2 billion share-repurchase programme. The redundancies, focused on product and engineering teams, will leave the company with roughly 1,600 employees. Etsy expects about $35 million in severance and related charges, with the restructuring largely complete by the end of the third quarter. Chief executive Kruti Patel Goyal said cost savings were not the objective, stating the company did not start with a reduction target. The new buyback programme carries no expiration date and sits alongside $578.2 million remaining under a previous authorisation. Etsy's second-quarter revenue rose 6.2% to $668.3 million, though active buyers slipped 0.4% to approximately 87 million.

Etsy shares 38.5% undervalued on cash flow despite $1.4B Depop sale and 12% job cuts

Etsy's valuation presents mixed signals for investors. The stock has rebounded over the past year after a 55.7% decline over five years, but its current price around $85.86 shows conflicting value indicators. A Discounted Cash Flow analysis suggests Etsy trades at a 38.5% discount to its intrinsic value of roughly $140 per share, based on $676.9 million in free cash flow. However, the company passes only two of six broader valuation tests, with earnings multiples indicating a richer price. Etsy is restructuring through layoffs affecting 12% of staff and selling Depop for approximately $1.4 billion in cash. These moves aim to improve efficiency and support capital returns, though execution risks and competition from Amazon and TikTok Shop remain concerns. The valuation debate centres on whether the DCF upside or earnings-based caution better reflects Etsy's true worth.
