Epic Games has released a public "Preview" build of a new Epic Games Launcher, which it says is faster than Steam. The company built it with AI-assisted "vibe coding." Epic Games Store general manager Martin Keely said the team started from scratch and used AI to write and review features in a different tech stack. The aim was to replicate the old launcher's functions, not its code. Keely said AI let a small team rewrite the code base and ship faster across Windows and Mac. A Linux version is planned. Ars's testing found the launcher reaches the store page a few seconds faster than Steam from a cold start. Epic claims a 0.06-second edge when restoring to the Library screen, which was unnoticeable in testing.
Epic Games vibe codes new launcher because 'programming is hard,' claims it starts 46% faster than Steam - Preview is available now but still in beta stage [Updated]. Last updated 3 hours ago You can respect the honesty, at least. Recent updates Update October 14 at 2:12pm ET: Brian Sharon, senior communications manager for Epic Games, shared the following statement: "The new Epic Games Launcher is in Preview for testing, and with any beta there could be issues. To be clear: once you're in a game you're good to go. The same goes for developer tools and non-gaming applications. All of the services will work as intended, and there's nothing that would prevent casual or competitive play." Epic Games has updated its blog post to remove the recommendation that developers and competitive players avoid the new preview. The original article continues below unchanged. Epic Games has a new launcher available to download now, which was redesigned with AI. The company says it "vibe coded" the new launcher, and claims it's "way faster" than the current version, as well as 46% faster to start up compared to Steam. Epic Games has set up a landing page where you can download the new launcher, as well as browse its new enhancements. "Programming is hard. So, instead of doing that, we vibe coded a new Epic Games Launcher that's way faster and more responsive than the current one, and has a new look," wrote Epic Games in a blog post discussing the new launcher. The launcher is currently in "preview" phase, which is somewhat of an open beta. Epic is gathering feedback, and anyone is free to download the launcher. In the future, it plans a stable release after it gathers and addresses feedback. Although the headline startup figure is what Epic focused on its blog post, the updated launcher comes with several additional features, many of which are preset on Steam but weren't previously available with Epic. There are dedicated pages for games in your library now, for instance, as well as a unified downloads page. The app also includes collections, a big feature of Steam, allowing you to organize your library into different categories. On the landing page, Epic claims the new library is "30x faster," though doesn't provide any details beyond that point. Latest Videos FromTom's Hardware How To Check Your CPU Temperature Although the launcher has new features, it's still rough around the edges. For instance, the new social menu now follows you around from the store to your library, with no option to close or resize. Epic also highlights that "certain social features and account management options" are missing from the new launcher. The company says it's working toward "feature parity." Additionally, Epic Games suggests developers working on Unreal projects, as well as competitive players in Fortnite and Rocket League continue to use the old launcher. It's not clear why Epic is pointing these groups toward the older launcher, but it raises some red flags about what gaps might be present in the new, vibe coded launcher. Epic says its new launcher is 46% faster than Steam from a cold start, as well as 14% faster when restoring from the system tray; though, the latter metric only accounts for a whopping 0.06 seconds. Epic commissioned the testing from Keywords Studios, somewhat of a matchmaker in the video games and entertainment industry for a variety of services (including benchmarking, apparently). Epic says its results were gathered from five tests across 13 Windows platforms. What is the main purpose of your PC? AI and LLM Interestingly, Epic didn't provide any performance details about the new launcher compared to the old one, outside of saying the new launcher is "way faster and more responsive." Epic's new games launcher is 'vibe coded' by bleffel | Oct 14, 2026 Epic Games is announcing a big refresh of its PC games launcher today in preview, saying that the new version is "way faster" and now supports Linux. But the company, which has been publicly making a big push into AI-assisted development, also notes that the refresh was "vibe coded." "Programming is hard," Epic says in a blog post. "So, instead of doing that, we vibe coded a new Epic Games Launcher that's way faster and more responsive than the current one, and has a new look." On Monday, CEO Tim Sweeney announced that the company has a "huge pivot underway," where it will be "moving developers around to retool for maximum AI acceleration... Gears of War creator cliffyb comments on E-Day. Published Oct 9, 2026, 4:00 PM EDT James Ratcliff joined Game Rant in 2022 as a Gaming News Writer. In 2023, James was offered a chance to become an occasional feature writer for different games and then a Senior Author in 2025. He is a third-generation Texan who has written professionally for over a decade at local newspapers, addressing various topics for his readers. Since 2024, James has shifted his complete focus to covering gaming news. Gears of War series creator Cliff "CliffyB" Bleszinski shared some positive and candid thoughts about Gears of War: E-Day during a video interview. Though he was not involved in the development of Gears of War: E-Day, Bleszinski's contributions laid the foundation for the entire Gears of War franchise. Bleszinski started his career as a game developer during his teenage years in the early 1990s. Shortly after joining Epic Games, Bleszinski went to work on games such as Jazz Jackrabbit and Unreal Tournament, with the latter being considered one of the most influential titles ever. Bleszinski later became the co-creator of Gears of War, where he was also the chief designer of the series' first three entries. Microsoft later acquired the rights to the Gears of War series in 2014, two years after Bleszinski left Epic Games. CliffyB shares some positive thoughts on Gears of War: E-Day. With Gears of War: E-Day already setting records, Bleszinski weighed in on the direction of the franchise he created. On the October 9 episode of Pause for Thought with Naomi Kyle, Bleszinski said that Gears of War: E-Day was "a class example of, when in doubt, give the people what they want." He recalled seeing a trailer for E-Day that showed Marcus Fenix throwing a TV a Locust Horde unit as a way to demonstrate just how powerful the Locust were. Bleszinski said that the music that played during the trailer was a callback to moments from the Gears series, which gave him "goosebumps." Bleszinski then said that he was disappointed to see that camera shaking during character movement was not present. However, Bleszinski stated that, if camera shaking was the only qualm he had about the game, then he believed that the franchise was heading in the right direction. Find the odd one out before the timer hits zero. Member mode Sign in to compete on the leaderboard and access the toughest difficulty mode. Though Bleszinski said he would not be playing E-Day himself, he said that he would watch his wife, Lauren, play through the game instead. The Gears of War creator stated that Microsoft sent him a new Xbox controller based on E-Day's designs. Bleszinski also revealed that, after he and other former Gears of War devs left Epic Games, former Xbox CEO Phil Spencer personally called him to mention that Microsoft had purchased the rights to the series. Bleszinski stated that he thinks Spencer's successor at Xbox, Asha Sharma, is seemingly doing a good job at "turning the ship around."
