About the company

Meta builds Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads, apps that billions of people use to message friends, share photos and video, and follow creators and businesses. Most of its revenue comes from advertising: businesses buy placements across these apps, and Meta's AI systems decide who sees each ad and report the results. Its Meta Superintelligence Labs group builds the company's own AI models, the Meta AI assistant and the Muse agent app. Its Reality Labs unit makes Quest headsets and, with eyewear maker EssilorLuxottica, Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses. Meta was founded as Facebook in 2004 and is based in Menlo Park, California.

What believers are saying

  • A booming ad business backs pay and stock: Meta's revenue rose 28% to $60.8 billion in the June 2026 quarter.
  • AI engineers get vast resources: Meta expects $130 billion to $145 billion of capital spending in 2026.
  • Wearables teams are scaling: in February 2026, Meta sought to double glasses output to 20 million units this year.

What critics are saying

  • Job security is shaky: about 8,000 employees were hit by Meta's May 2026 layoffs, aimed at funding its AI push.
  • Meta's biggest apps still face a breakup fight: the FTC appealed its Instagram and WhatsApp court win in January 2026.
  • Hardware plans get reshuffled: Meta cut about 1,500 Reality Labs jobs in January 2026, shifting from the metaverse to wearables.

What makes Meta unique

  • Meta's four apps form one huge audience: 3.56 billion people used them daily in March 2026.
  • Meta leads smart glasses through eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica: their Ray-Ban and Oakley models sold over 7 million pairs in 2025.
  • Meta builds consumer AI agents in-house: its Muse app, launched September 2026, topped Apple's US free-app chart within ten days.

Ackman says Meta can fund AI push with $82B cash as shares fall 8%

Billionaire investor Bill Ackman says Meta Platforms can fund its AI ambitions, pointing to about $82 billion in cash and securities. "They've got 80 billion of cash on the balance sheet, they have no net leverage," he told CNBC on Thursday. Meta shares fell nearly 8% that day after the company raised the lower end of its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to $135 billion, keeping the $145 billion upper limit. Ackman called the drop the work of "short-term traders." Meta spent nearly $86 billion on infrastructure in the first nine months of 2026, against almost $97 billion in operating cash flow. It also carried nearly $81 billion in long-term debt. The company plans to issue nonvoting Class C shares, letting it raise equity without diluting chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg's voting control. Third-quarter revenue rose 26% to $64.6 billion.

World's six richest lose $130B as AI spending fears hit tech stocks

The world's six richest people lost a combined $130 billion on Thursday as tech stocks fell on renewed doubts about returns on AI infrastructure spending. Elon Musk lost $74 billion, bringing his net worth to $914.7 billion, as SpaceX shares sank nearly 9%. Investors weighed a $35 billion cash-flow gap and Musk's confirmation that SpaceX is considering a merger with Tesla. Tesla fell 2%, after it cut its full-year capital expenditure guidance to $20 billion from over $25 billion. Mark Zuckerberg lost $18 billion as Meta fell 8%. The company raised the low end of its capital spending forecast by $5 billion, to $135 billion to $145 billion. Jeff Bezos lost $11 billion as Amazon fell nearly 5%. Larry Page and Sergey Brin lost a combined $15 billion, and Michael Dell lost $12 billion as Dell Technologies dropped 7%.

Zuckerberg says Threads beats X on users, but Meta's $64.6B quarter shows no payoff

Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said on October 21, 2026, that Threads has overtaken X in monthly active users. He gave no figure; the last count Meta published was 500 million monthly users, in June 2026. SpaceX's IPO filing put X at about 550 million users as of March 2026. Third-party data show Threads ahead among global daily mobile users, but X still leads in the US, 21.4 million to 16.6 million. Meta reported $64.6 billion in quarterly revenue, up 26%, with no measurable contribution from Threads. X's ad revenue for the first nine months of 2026 was $1.248 billion, down from $1.323 billion a year earlier.

Ives stays bullish on Tesla ($500 target) and Meta ($900) as AI payoffs diverge

Wedbush analyst Dan Ives stays bullish on Tesla and Meta Platforms after their latest earnings, though the two cases are diverging. Tesla shares fell after hours despite a modest beat, while Meta rose. Tesla reported revenue of $28.05 billion, roughly flat year over year, and adjusted earnings of $0.48 per share against a $0.45 estimate. Operating expenses jumped 39% as it spends on AI, autonomy, and robotics. Meta's revenue rose 26% to $64.60 billion, beating consensus. Average ad prices rose 14%, which suggests its AI spending is helping the core advertising business. Ives rates Tesla Outperform with a $500 price target and Meta at $900, each implying roughly 29% upside. He sees an 80% to 90% chance that Tesla and SpaceX merge by the end of 2027.

Meta's nonvoting share plan creates a stock overhang as Wall Street urges quick issuance

Meta shares fell 2% in premarket trading on Thursday after the company announced a new class of nonvoting Class C stock, which Wall Street says creates an overhang. Existing shareholders will get one Class C share for every Class A or Class B share they hold, effectively a 2-for-1 split. Trading is slated to begin in January 2027. The structure lets Mark Zuckerberg raise outside capital for Meta's AI build-out without diluting his voting control. JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth urged Meta to issue the stock quickly: "The sooner the better in our view as it would remove the overhang." The news overshadowed a strong quarter. Revenue rose 26% to $64.6 billion, and earnings per share were $3.83 against estimates of $3.56.
