EA lays off 400 staff and closes BioWare after 31 years, memo leak reveals

Electronic Arts is laying off about 400 employees, or 3% of its global workforce, and closing video game studio BioWare, according to a leaked employee memo reported Wednesday. The cuts come amid a business restructure. BioWare's closure ends a 31-year run in which it developed franchises including "Mass Effect" and "Dragon Age." "Over the past several months, we've taken a hard look at our business, how we operate, and what it will take to lead in this next era of interactive entertainment," wrote Cam Weber, president and chief studios officer, and David Tinson, president and chief operating officer. They added that the company had "challenged assumptions, confronted hard realities" and made deliberate choices "to drive sustained growth.

EA shuts down BioWare after three decades, ending next Mass Effect project

Electronic Arts (EA) has shut down BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Neverwinter Nights, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. BioWare announced the closure on social media Wednesday, saying early development on the next Mass Effect project is also ending. The announcement followed a Bloomberg report of 400 job cuts across EA, including 50 at BioWare. EA executives told staff the company is aligning "talent and investments where we see the greatest opportunities for players and long-term growth," according to Bloomberg. BioWare was founded in Edmonton, Alberta, in 1995 and joined EA in 2007. EA went private last year in a $55 billion deal led by Silver Lake, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, and Jared Kushner's Affinity Partners.

EA shuts down BioWare after 30 years and cancels Mass Effect 5

Electronic Arts (EA) will shut down BioWare, the studio behind Baldur's Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect. Early development on the next Mass Effect game will also end. In a statement, BioWare said its focus is on supporting its team through the transition. The studio was founded in 1995. BioWare had a string of costly misses with Mass Effect: Andromeda, Anthem, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which fell short of fan expectations, financial expectations, or both. Longtime Mass Effect figures Casey Hudson, Mark Darrah, and Mac Walters left the company years ago.

SWTOR announces Meirm Cicada GT mount and November 12 name release. Electronic Arts announces the Meirm Cicada GT subscriber mount and a November 12 SWTOR inactive character name release. Electronic Arts announced on October 14, 2026 that Star Wars: The Old Republic, the free-to-play Star Wars MMO, will give active subscribers a new Meirm Cicada GT mount and will release inactive character names on November 12, 2026 as part of the run-up to the game's 15th anniversary. The mount is available to players with an active subscription from October 14 to November 12, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. CT / 3:00 p.m. UTC. Free-to-play and preferred players face a November 12 deadline: any character not logged into since January 1, 2026 can have its name released into an unreserved pool on that date. Active subscribers are not affected; all of a subscriber's character names are preserved. The Meirm Cicada GT mount. Players need an active subscription during the period from October 14 to November 12, 2026 to receive the mount. The Meirm Cicada GT is both minipet and companion compatible, so players can ride with a companion. Some larger companions, such as B3-S1, will not fit in the passenger seat. The GT version follows the original Meirm Cicada mount that debuted years ago and answers long-standing player requests for a second chance at a similar mount. Inactive Character Name release rules. The name release is part of the run-up to SWTOR's 15th anniversary. For subscribers, all character names are preserved and none are impacted. For free-to-play and preferred players, the condition applies character by character. Another player can potentially claim that name on the same date. A player who loses a name receives an opportunity to rename that character for free when logging into it again. To claim a released name, players can create a new character or purchase the Rename: Character Name Consumable to rename an existing character. The Master the Fight: Prepare for Battle Bundle adds fixed subscription time. Either bundle grants the Meirm Cicada GT mount and helps secure character names. The announcement follows SWTOR's Game Update 7.9.1c, which arrived in September with Hidden Chain invasions.

Battlefield 6 gets Game of the Year Edition and $30 weapon Shortcut Kit.

Battlefield 6 gets Game of the Year Edition and $30 weapon Shortcut Kit. Battlefield 6 introduces a Game of the Year Edition and a $29.99 shortcut kit that unlocks weapons and equipment, while EA Play and Game Pass add the standard game. Electronic Arts has released a Game of the Year Edition for Battlefield 6, alongside a $29.99 Ultimate Shortcut Kit that immediately unlocks weapons, gadgets and vehicle upgrades. Both arrived on October 13, 2026, the same day the shooter became available through EA Play and Xbox Game Pass. The new edition bundles the base game with progression unlocks, premium Battle Pass rewards and cosmetic items. However, EA has confirmed that Game Pass subscribers only receive access to the standard game. The Game of the Year Edition must be purchased separately. $30 Ultimate Shortcut Kit unlocks weapons and vehicle upgrades. The Ultimate Shortcut Kit allows players to bypass much of Battlefield 6's original weapon and equipment progression. It includes separate shortcut packs for all four classes: Assault, Support, Engineer and Recon. Each class pack provides seven weapons and two vehicles at 100% Mastery, along with its corresponding training path and gadgets. Assault, Support and Recon receive four gadgets each, while Engineer receives seven. The package also includes the Mortal Shriek dog tag and Field Training: Cross Trained player title. According to EA, these unlocks cover base-game weapons, gadgets and vehicle upgrades. They do not automatically grant every weapon introduced through later seasonal updates. The Ultimate Shortcut Kit is available separately for $29.99 and can be used with either Battlefield 6 or the free-to-play Battlefield REDSEC. Players can access the included equipment without completing the usual progression requirements. Game of the Year Edition bundles the shortcut kit with Battlefield Pro. The new Game of the Year Edition includes the complete Battlefield 6 base game, Ultimate Shortcut Kit and a Battlefield Pro token. The token provides access to one season's premium Battle Pass, 25 tier skips and additional exclusive rewards. Players also receive the Phantom Pack, which includes four soldier skins, weapon cosmetics, a vehicle skin, a dog tag and XP boosts. A new Trusted Reserve soldier skin for the Pax Armata faction is included. The complete Game of the Year Edition normally costs $99.99 in the US, but is currently discounted to $59.99 on Steam and Xbox. The promotional price is available until October 20 on Steam and October 23 on Xbox. EA has also introduced a $30 Game of the Year Upgrade for players who already own the base game. This provides the additional content without requiring another purchase of Battlefield 6. The previous Phantom Edition is no longer available for purchase. Existing Phantom Edition owners automatically receive the Trusted Reserve skin and can purchase the upgrade for the remaining additions. The Game of the Year Edition is available digitally, with no physical release announced. Battlefield 6 joins Game Pass, but the new edition is not included. Battlefield 6 became available through EA Play on October 13, allowing Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers to access the full base game. Eligible subscribers can play the campaign and multiplayer while their subscription remains active. EA Play members can also claim the Deployment Pack, Season 5 EA Play Pack and recurring seasonal rewards. Game Pass Ultimate members receive EA Play benefits, including a 10% discount on eligible EA digital purchases. The discount applies to products such as the Ultimate Shortcut Kit and Battlefield Pro. However, subscription access does not include the Game of the Year Edition or its bundled progression unlocks. Players who want those additional rewards must purchase the relevant upgrade or shortcut kit separately. The ultimate all-out warfare experience.
