Requirements
  • A registered nurse with at least an associate’s degree in nursing is required.
  • A current license to practice nursing in the state of employment is required, if applicable.
  • Current CPR certification is required.
  • Current automobile insurance and a valid driver’s license are required.
  • At least one year of management or supervisory experience is required.
  • At least two years of experience in hospice or home care is required.
  • Must meet all state-specific requirements for the Administrator role when functioning as the Alternate or Interim Administrator.
  • A strong understanding of hospice regulations, compliance, and Medicare conditions of participation is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage teams, budgets, and interdisciplinary operations is required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide hands-on leadership for a hospice program, with accountability for clinical quality, operational performance, and sustainable census expansion.
  • Apply continuous quality improvement principles in day-to-day activities and use statistical and qualitative information to manage quality.
  • Promote and monitor compliance with accrediting, licensing, and regulatory agency requirements and relevant state and federal laws; ensure policies and procedures are followed.
  • Maintain current knowledge of developments and technologies in the field through self-development, in-service attendance, and sharing relevant information with employees.
  • Recommend and implement policies and procedures developed by the Administrator and Governing Body to guide service delivery.
  • Promote communication with employees, keep them informed of changes, and ensure appropriate staff meetings are conducted and documented; be available to employees when issues arise.
  • Provide core orientation at the Administrator’s direction, as well as location- and job-specific orientation, in-service training, and continuing education for employees, volunteers, and contract personnel.
  • Conduct educational programs for outside agencies as needed.
  • Recommend sufficient qualified and competent staffing to provide services, and select, supervise, and evaluate interdisciplinary team members in collaboration with the Administrator.
  • Collaborate with the Administrator, corporate leadership, and employees to establish performance goals and standards, monitor progress, and redirect efforts when goals are not met.
  • Determine employee qualifications and competence in collaboration with the Administrator.
  • Complete performance evaluations in collaboration with the Administrator before their due dates.
  • Take timely disciplinary action in collaboration with the Administrator and document actions according to policy.
  • Assign work according to employees’ abilities and limitations and ensure fair workload distribution.
  • Direct multiple teams at the assigned location, when applicable, and organize tasks and resources to achieve strategic goals and objectives.
  • Set priorities, measure progress toward goals, take corrective action on projects, and consider the impact of local decisions on the provider, company, and hospice affiliates.
  • Review relevant facts and information when developing plans of action and work toward predetermined objectives and goals.
  • Participate in selecting outside service providers in collaboration with the Administrator and ensure contracts for outside vendors and providers are maintained.
  • Assess and improve branch or department performance and individual team performance; ensure service documentation is accurate and timely.
  • Monitor and supervise the quality of patient care at assigned locations, process emergency calls and requests for assistance, and help solve patient problems in all settings.
  • Prepare, monitor, and review monthly bills, supply costs, expense requests, mileage reimbursement, payroll, and other expenses.
  • Recommend service-area opportunities for new programs or services and ensure marketing and public information materials and activities are accurate in collaboration with the Administrator.
  • Perform routine visits to patient homes or institutional settings and/or participate in the on-call schedule when requested and if a Registered Nurse.
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, customers, and employees.
  • Investigate and document incidents, accidents, grievances, complaints, medication errors, and other problems within policy timeframes, and implement corrective or preventive actions in collaboration with the Administrator.
  • Work with physicians, patients, families, staff, and others to address problems, needs, and concerns.
  • Supervise and evaluate family satisfaction surveys in collaboration with the Administrator.
  • Include safety topics in staff meetings and regularly review safety policies and procedures, including the Emergency Preparedness Plan; ensure employees understand their safety responsibilities.
  • Complete financial reviews with the Administrator according to schedule and submit budget worksheets by deadlines.
  • Keep annual expenditures within budget except for approved volume-driven variances, anticipate resource needs, and plan budgets within known parameters.
  • Justify budget variances regularly, seek cost reductions without affecting quality, and control overtime and temporary staffing in collaboration with the Administrator except when justified by increased volume or reduced staffing.
  • Recommend space and other resources needed to provide services.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited nursing school is preferred.
  • At least three years of direct patient care experience in a clinical setting is preferred.
  • Three to five years of healthcare sales or management experience is preferred.
