Greene King and Macmillan partnership recognised as one of the UK's Most Admired non-profit partnerships. 4 hours ago Greene King and Macmillan Cancer Support have been recognised as one of the UK's most admired non-profit partnerships in the C&E Advisory's Corporate-Non-Profit Partnerships Barometer 2026. The result was decided by a poll of 117 corporate and non-profit partnership professionals from many of the world's leading businesses and charities, and highlighted the partnership's longevity, shared purpose, strategic alignment, and measurable impact. Since the start of the partnership in 2012, Greene King and Macmillan have built their relationship around a shared commitment to the communities they serve. While fundraising remains at the heart of the partnership, its scope has expanded in recent years, combining Greene King's reach through its pubs across the country with Macmillan's expertise in supporting people affected by cancer. Today, the organisations are working together to find new ways to raise awareness, encourage conversations about health and wellbeing, and signpost people to where they can find Macmillan's services and support. One example of this activity is the Early Bell campaign, launched earlier this year by Greene King and Macmillan to raise awareness of prostate cancer symptoms. Pubs across the UK rang their last orders bell at 6pm to signify that one in six men in the UK will be diagnosed with the condition in their lifetime*. The campaign encouraged customers to talk about prostate cancer and to understand the symptoms, directing them towards trusted information and support from Macmillan. Andrew Bush, Chief Strategy & Experience Officer at Greene King, said: "Beer Guild is honoured to see its partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support recognised in this year's C&E Barometer. This recognition reflects how its approach has evolved over the past 14 years from a traditional corporate charity partnership focused predominantly on fundraising, into a strategic collaboration that is now embedded in how Beer Guild deliver positive impact across its business for its teams, its customers and the communities Beer Guild serve. "While fundraising remains incredibly important, we're equally focused on using our scale and reach to provide a trusted community space where important conversations can be had, where we can help raise awareness of health issues and connect people with the help and support they may need. We're proud of what we've achieved with Macmillan so far and are excited to continue evolving the partnership in ways that create lasting value for both our organisations and the communities we support." Gemma Peters, Chief Executive at Macmillan Cancer Support, said: "Its brilliant partnership with Greene King has been recognised as one of the UK's most admired collaborations, and moments like this show what's possible when charities and businesses build a true partnership around a shared purpose. "For nearly 15 years, Greene King team members, customers and communities have gone above and beyond to help make sure nobody faces cancer alone. What began as a fundraising partnership in 2012 has grown into something much bigger. "This award is a testament to the commitment of Greene King colleagues and customers who have helped us do whatever it takes for people living with cancer. We're incredibly proud of everything we've achieved together so far, and I'm excited for what we achieve next for people living with cancer." The partnership's success is also underpinned by the commitment of Greene King's team members, customers and supplier partners, whose fundraising efforts have helped to raise more than £27 million for Macmillan since the partnership began. Greene King and Macmillan will continue to build on the partnership, exploring how pubs can help Macmillan reach more people with its information and services closer to where they live. The Beer Tapestry opens across the road from British Museum. Greene King Brewery has unveiled 'The Beer Tapestry' at one of its London pubs as the original and historic Bayeux Tapestry opens in the London Museum across the road - offering culture lovers the chance to bypass the legendary museum queues and toast a pint to history instead. Displayed today and throughout September, 'The Beer Tapestry' is a stunning eight-metre long embroidered artwork created by the brewer to tell the story of beer in Britain, from conquest and cask ale to the people, pubs and breweries that have kept the nation refreshed for centuries. Illustrating the origins and enduring cultural importance of one of Britain's most iconic creations, beer, the tapestry hangs at the Museum Tavern on Great Russell Street, one of Greene King's most historic pubs. Located directly opposite the British Museum, the pub has been temporarily renamed 'The Beer Tapestry' for the duration of the exhibition. The Beer Tapestry offers a free alternative to the Bayeux Tapestry, with a distinctly pub-friendly twist; visitors can see the artwork from the comfort of a bar stool, pint in hand. To mark the occasion, Greene King Brewery has also crafted a limited-edition ale - 'The Beer Tapestry' - a dark copper cask beer available at the Museum Tavern from today. Speaking about the embroidered Beer Tapestry, Jack Palmer, Head Brewer at Greene King, said: "Beer has been a huge part of Greene King's story for more than 200 years, so creating our own tapestry felt like the perfect way to celebrate the brewing moments that helped shape Britain's beer culture. We couldn't resist the chance to bring a bit of fun to Great Russell Street while our neighbours prepare to welcome another rather famous tapestry across the road. Ours comes with a great pub atmosphere and a limited-edition legendary beer, centuries in the making." Greene King brewing historian and chair of the Brewing History Society, Susan Chisholm, also commented: "The Museum Tavern has been part of London life since the eighteenth century, first opening on this site in 1723 as The Dog & Duck before becoming the Museum Tavern in 1759, when the British Museum opened. That makes it the ideal home for Greene King's Beer Tapestry: a celebration not just of beer, but the brewers who have made it such a lasting part of British culture. Across eight scenes, the artwork weaves together national moments with Greene King Brewery's own heritage, from its early beginnings in Bury St Edmunds, where we still brew to this day, to the modern brewery we are building for the future." The Beer Tapestry begins in 1066 when the Bayeux Tapestry ends, as the victorious William celebrates his new kingdom with the welcome discovery that, although the crown has changed hands - the ale has not. The tapestry then moves on to the 15th century, when hoppy beers arrive from the Low Countries. Initially met with suspicion, they soon become a national favourite. Then, Henry VIII dissolves the monasteries, including one of the most powerful Benedictine monasteries in Medieval England in Bury St Edmunds - home of Greene King - bringing an abrupt end to centuries of monastic brewing. By the 1770s, the Royal Navy rules the seas, its sailors reputedly powered by eight pints of ale a day and a healthy disregard for the French. And, back in Bury St Edmunds, two brewing families become fierce rivals before burying the hatchet and joining forces to become the Greene King pub company and brewer that London TV know today. War brings a new generation of women into the Greene King Brewery, keeping the beer flowing while the men are away. Finally, horse-drawn carts give way to trucks, forklifts and modern machinery as brewing enters the 21st century - with Greene King preparing to open its new brewery in 2027. From conquest to cask, the country changes beyond recognition but its appetite for beer - and the Great British pub - remains reassuringly constant to this day. To see the Beer Tapestry, visit the Museum Tavern, renamed The Beer Tapestry, 49 Great Russell Street, London, WC1B 3BA, throughout September 2026
Greene King celebrates win at the European Loyalty Awards for its app based loyalty & reward programme. 2 hours ago Greene King, the UK's leading pub company and brewer, is celebrating after it won the award for Best Use of Gamification in a Loyalty Programme or Initiative at the European Loyalty Awards. The European Loyalty Awards recognise excellence and innovation in customer loyalty. Greene King was awarded the Best Use of Gamification in a Loyalty Programme category for its loyalty and reward programme within the Greene King App, which uses game-based experiences to enhance the customer experience, on 3 September. Since launching in September 2025, more than two million customers have now signed up for loyalty and rewards. Gamification features have been built into the Greene King App to encourage customers to visit more often, engage with the rewards programme and unlock additional value. Each feature was designed with a specific goal in mind. For example, Spin to Win provides a guaranteed reward when a customer first joins the rewards programme, while Pub Match turns purchases into a game experience with a built-in leaderboard and the chance to win prizes up to £50. Seasonal in-app events also add cultural relevance and help create ongoing engagement. Recent examples include a World Cup sweepstake, which offered customers the chance to win up to eight free drinks, as well as a sticker collection game designed to build regular customer interaction with the app between pub visits. Clair Preston-Beer, Chief Digital and Commercial Officer at Greene King said: "Since launching the Greene King App reward programme last year, its focus has been on creating an experience that offers genuine value to customers, while giving them more reasons to visit its pubs more often. Beer Guild is therefore delighted to receive this recognition from the European Loyalty Awards. "Gamification has become an important part of the customer experience, helping us make the rewards programme more interactive, fun and relevant for our customers." Greene King accelerates pub investments to enhance experiences across the capital. 08 September 2026 * Pub company and brewer set to invest c.£15m in its London estate during 2026; 33% up on 2025 * 39 sites are set to be refurbished during the year as Greene King strives to deliver outstanding customer experiences Greene King is driving investment in its London pubs as the business strives to deliver outstanding customer experiences whilst preserving the unique heritage of its much-loved venues across the capital. To date in 2026, Greene King has invested over £6 million in 20 pubs across Greater London, spanning its managed pubs and its leased, tenanted and franchise business, Pub Partners. Investments in a further 19 sites are expected through the remainder of this year, bringing the overall projected spend c.£15 million - up 33% year-on-year - as the business continues to protect and enhance its landmark venues for generations to come. The investment programme reflects Greene King's continued strategic commitment to reinvest in its core estate, and the ongoing demand for top quality hospitality experiences in London, reinforcing the capital's position as a premier destination for food, drink and culture amongst tourists and locals alike. It also underlines that fundamental reform of disproportionate taxation - including business rates, VAT and duty - and a supportive licensing environment is critical for the viability of investments such as these, because each refurbishment is not simply about giving pubs a cosmetic refresh; it is about making the right long-term decisions for each site, from kitchen efficiencies to how internal and outdoor spaces can be used to meet changing customer expectations. London's pub landmarks provide unique experiences Investment in the business' historic London sites remains a core priority as guests seek more personalised experiences, with each pub providing an authentic atmosphere in unique surroundings that offer a feel of the city's rich past. These refurbishments show how targeted investment can protect heritage while modernising the customer experience. Recent investments include the historic London Apprentice in Isleworth, with 110% growth in year-on-year sales in the four weeks after the pub's reopening in July. One of Greene King's more modern sites, the Blue Posts in St James's, also underwent a full interior refresh to elevate its sports viewing experiences, resulting in a 234% increase in online bookings in the first four weeks post-reopening in April versus the same period in 2025. Nick Mackenzie, Greene King's chief executive, said: "London is a crucial market for the pub sector given its position as a key cultural hub for tourists and locals alike. Greene King is seeing that people are increasingly seeking elevated experiences when they eat and drink out, and in a challenging economic environment it's never been more important to maximise value for customers in the capital and adapt to changing expectations. "Investment in its London venues provides a strong opportunity to realise the potential of these characterful pubs, enabling Greene King to preserve unique and historical buildings while offering customers the chance to enjoy live sports, entertainment and elevated food and drink. "But successful investment is about more than refurbishing bricks and mortar; it also depends on having the right regulatory environment in place, which includes fairer taxation so we can continue to invest and appropriate licensing conditions so pubs can use their internal and outdoor spaces effectively, trade responsibly and meet changing customer expectations. At a time of significant cost pressures, London pubs continue to play an important role in driving footfall, supporting job creation and giving visitors and locals experiences they can't get anywhere else." Upcoming London investment projects include the Shakespeare's Head in Soho, the Glassblower in Piccadilly and the Albert in Victoria, with Greene King continuing to focus on venues where investment can enhance the customer experience and support long-term pub viability.
Abbot Ale strikes gold as Greene King earns three International Beer Challenge medals. Greene King Brewery has been recognised at this year's International Beer Challenge, securing one gold and two bronze medals across its portfolio. The International Beer Challenge is one of the brewing industry's most respected competitions, recognising and promoting outstanding beers from around the world. Judged by an expert panel of brewers, buyers and industry professionals, the awards celebrate excellence across a wide range of internationally recognised beer styles. Almost 400 beers were tasted during the judging process, with Greene King's Abbot Ale securing gold in this year's awards. First brewed in 1951, Abbot Ale (5% ABV) is a traditional ale renowned for its rich fruit character, malty richness and superb hop balance. A favourite among ale drinkers, it remains one of the UK's best-loved premium ales and is available nationwide across retail and hospitality venues. Abbot Ale also secured a bronze medal at this year's World Beer Awards. Also recognised in the competition was Hazy Day Fruity IPA (4.3% ABV), which secured a bronze medal in its category. Hazy Day is a smooth, fruity IPA packed with orange, citrus and tropical notes. The name of the beer is inspired by a 16th-century tradition in Bury St Edmunds, where those convicted of minor crimes were sentenced to a day in the pillory. Completing the trio of award winners was Greene King IPA, which also received a bronze medal this year. Greene King IPA is a refreshing and easy-drinking 3.4% ABV ale with a balanced flavour profile and subtle hop character, making it a firm favourite among consumers. Matt Starbuck, Managing Director Brewing & Brands and Group Supply Chain at Greene King, said: "Beer Guild is incredibly proud to see its beers recognised at the International Beer Challenge, particularly with a gold medal for Abbot Ale - one of the most iconic beers in its portfolio. "These awards reflect the passion, expertise and dedication of our brewing teams, who work hard every day to create high-quality beers that appeal to a wide range of drinkers. From traditional ales such as Abbot Ale to newer innovations like Hazy Day Fruity IPA, we remain committed to brewing great beers that consumers can enjoy across a variety of styles and occasions."
