Workday's potential $51B Silver Lake deal could create floor for struggling software sector

Dan Niles, founder of Niles Investment Management, said Silver Lake's potential acquisition of Workday could create a floor for the struggling software sector. Reuters reported the talks on Thursday, sending Workday shares up nearly 18% to $206.45, boosting its valuation from $43 billion to around $51.1 billion. Niles noted the deal would rival Silver Lake's record $55 billion Electronic Arts buyout. He said AI-native companies like Anthropic and OpenAI are pressuring the software industry, but the Workday deal could help the sector outperform the S&P 500 through year-end. The iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF is down 3% over the past year, whilst the S&P 500 has gained over 20%. Palo Alto Networks CEO Nikesh Arora responded on X, saying AI poses no existential threat to cybersecurity companies.
