Make-A-Wish Southern Florida grants wish of fishing boat to 12-year-old boy who battled cancer. June 1, 2026 DANIA BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - A South Florida boy got a big surprise and a dream come true, thanks to the partnership of Make-A-Wish Southern Florida and Bass Pro Shops. The 12-year-old from Pompano Beach took a trip to Dania Beach for the kind of surprise that checks off a major bucket list item. 7News cameras captured the moment Benjamin Rodrigues was presented with his very own fishing boat that he had wished for a very long time. "Oh my God, oh my God!" said Rodrigues as he covered his mouth in awe and walked closer to the boat. The generous gift from the organization is aimed at helping the young boy work toward his goal of becoming a sport fisherman. The child bravely battled leukemia for the past year. From hospital visits to chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, he was sidelined for a while. "He's only 12, but he definitely has a purpose, and he definitely has that in mind. Some good days and some bad days, and you wish it wouldn't have happened, but he's been able to rebound," said Rodrigues' father, Lucas. Now, after surviving those hardships, he's ready to pursue his dream in the water. "It's like wow! So surreal to me," said Rodrigues. "I was feeling like just, 'Am I dreaming? Is this real?" Chris Smeeton, General Manager at Bass Pro Shops in Dania Beach, said it was amazing to see the young boy's reaction. "To see his face, to see the wow on his face and again knowing he's going to be on the water with his brothers and his family, you know, again making memories, that's what it's all about," he said. Lucas said that the year in the hospital introduced the family to the cancer community, from the hospitals providing medical care to a network of families and generous donors who make moments like these possible. "What me and my wife who came to find out is that we didn't know much about the cancer community and it's an amazing community, supportive community," said Lucas. The young boy said he's grateful for the gift. "I want to thank Make-A-Wish because a boat is not something that's, you know, cheap or easy to get, but they did it. They did it for me because I'm struggling with cancer, so I just want to thank you guys so much," said Rodrigues. Smeeton said the only thing he wants to see now is pictures of Ben and his family on the water.
Bass Pro Shops plans first store in New York Metropolitan area. May 29, 2026 Bass Pro Shops is planning to open a store in Hicksville, NY, its first store on Long Island and first in the New York Metropolitan area. Nassau County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) representatives confirmed to local media that Bass Pro was given a preliminary approval at a meeting on Thursday night to move forward with the application. Bass Pro Shops is seeking a 20-year PILOT (Payment in Lieu of Taxes), mortgage recording, and sales tax exemptions from the Nassau IDA. The store is expected to create 200 jobs with an estimated annual payroll approaching $8 million, according to the application. The IDA told Greater Long Island it will now begin an economic analysis. A meeting for final approval would be scheduled for a later date. The company plans to lease the 9.8-acre site formerly occupied by a Sears Auto Center at 195 North Broadway and construct a 130,000-square-foot Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World store, according to its application with Nassau IDA. The construction project is estimated to cost $65 million. The Hicksville Bass Pro Shops would be the chain's only location in downstate New York. The closest existing Bass Pro is located in Bridgeport, CT., a 67-mile drive from the proposed Hicksville site. Bass Pro operates 181 Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's stores combined. Eastview owner says arrival of Bass Pro Shops vital to mall's future. The owner of Eastview Mall believes the impending arrival of Bass Pro Shops will help invigorate a mostly vacant section of their shopping complex. Representatives of Bass Pro Shops on Tuesday night provided a preliminary first look at how a long-vacant anchor property at the mall will be transformed into a destination store for outdoor enthusiasts. The Missouri-based retailer is in the process of turning the 90,000 square feet of what was a Lord & Taylor department store into an outlet for fishing, camping, boating and outdoor lifestyle enthusiasts. The store's arrival, with an possible opening later this year, will give Bass Pro Shops a presence in the Rochester area for the first time and perhaps eliminate the retail desert that is the mall's northwest wing. Lord & Taylor closed in 2021, and the anchor space has been vacant ever since, with ownership finally transferring to the town of Victor through eminent domain in 2025. The abandoned property "has been a drag on the center and a negative on our efforts to lease that entire adjacent wing," Tom Wilmot Jr., president of mall owner Wilmorite Management Group, LLC, told the town of Victor Planning Board on Tuesday night. "We're at an inflection point at the center with Bass Pro announcing their intent to convert the store. We lost a struggling Lord & Taylor that had a lot of problems, had declining sales. Now we have a new store coming in that is literally the class in outdoor sporting stores. They have 200 million annual customers across their portfolio of stores, which is only a little over 100 Bass Pros in North America." Glenn Harvey, director of land development for Rochester-based Fisher Associates, told the planning board that the new store will maintain the existing customer access points on the east, south and west sides while adding three overhead doors on the north side for boat servicing. There will be extensive landscaping on the south, west and north sides, and the traditional Bass Pro Shops tower is proposed for the southwest corner of the property. The south wall also will include a giant mural. Renderings depicted High Falls in downtown Rochester, but planning board members asked the retailer to consider something that better depicts Victor and/or the Finger Lakes Region. Tuesday's meeting allowed the town to get a better sense of what the retailer has planned before official requests for zoning variances and plan approvals are made. [email protected]/(585) 653-4020
