About the Job

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or an equivalent field.
  • At least five years of professional experience developing PVD and CVD coatings in research and development or production within a high-volume manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with surface treatment and manufacturing processes, including basic knowledge of PVD chamber hardware and process parameters, and establishing and validating coating processes for mass production.
  • Ability to conduct structured failure analysis and root-cause investigations on manufacturing defects or equipment failures and translate findings into actionable automation improvements.
  • Verbal and written proficiency in English.
  • Deep understanding of PVD chamber hardware design, modification, and maintenance, and a track record of optimizing PVD process recipes for advanced cosmetic or functional coatings.
  • Expertise using analytical techniques such as X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to characterize film quality or troubleshoot failure modes and support complex root-cause analysis and predictive quality modeling.
  • Proficiency with optical simulation tools such as Macleod and TFCALC to review and design coating stacks, optimize chamber hardware and fixtures, and develop engineering solutions for color and cosmetic improvement.
  • Advanced statistical analysis skills and experience with design of experiments, process capability index, correlation, and gauge repeatability and reproducibility; familiarity with JMP, Minitab, or MATLAB.
  • Vendor management experience, including handling conflicts and directing vendors to implement actions and deliver results.
  • Ability to program-manage multiple projects, vendors, and resources globally.
  • Ability to manage challenges proactively and provide solutions.
  • Willingness to travel frequently domestically and sometimes overseas.

Responsibilities

  • Participate on a team developing and implementing next-generation PVD processes for cosmetic and protective finishes, with a focus on PVD coatings and equipment hardware for Apple enclosure designs.
  • Understand the relationship between equipment automation parameters, PVD chamber hardware such as vacuum systems, target configurations, and gas delivery, and the underlying PVD process and materials chemistry, including thin-film stack design, formulation, sputtering power, coating, and curing processes.
  • Use failure analysis capabilities to troubleshoot production problems and close yield gaps.
  • Correlate failure-analysis findings with process or equipment data for troubleshooting, and develop error-proofing and closed-loop process controls for prevention.
  • Work with cross-functional operations teams and contract manufacturers to evaluate implementation risk, create technical requirements and qualification packages, assess PVD process integrator capabilities, and provide design-for-manufacturing feedback.
  • Coordinate activities with global counterparts to improve process capability, and present detailed technical and statistical analyses of manufacturing capability to cross-functional teams and key decision-makers.
  • Provide leadership at manufacturing sites during development and product production ramp, and drive engineering issues to resolution.
  • Coordinate activities and direction through clear communication among Asia- and US-based teams and vendors.

Desired Qualifications

  • Excellent problem-solving skills with an emphasis on implementing solutions.
  • Self-motivation and commitment to delivering high-quality results in a fast-paced environment.
