Requirements
  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required.
  • Current certification as a Lactation Consultant by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners is required.
  • At least one year of work or volunteer related lactation education counseling experience is required.
  • The ability to exercise sound judgment, attention to detail, and problem resolution skills is required.
  • Basic computer knowledge and the ability to use audiovisual equipment are required.
Responsibilities
  • Initiate and receive referrals from physicians, nursing staff, and patients.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate educational plans for patients requiring lactation services.
  • Assess the educational needs of breastfeeding mothers and families and identify individualized plans to meet their needs.
  • Provide timely lactation services and direct patient care to patients.
  • Perform inpatient bedside consultations and outpatient consultations as necessary.
  • Provide individual teaching and group classes to breastfeeding patients and families.
  • Document breastfeeding education and related patient assessments, including teaching and progress.
  • Submit accurate and timely documentation of billable services.
  • Educate, guide, assist, and serve as a resource to nursing staff, healthcare team members, and community caregivers who support breastfeeding mothers.
  • Develop teaching plans and curriculum for patient breastfeeding education programs.
  • Assist with educational programs and consultation and support for nursing staff.
  • Assist in developing or reviewing literature related to infant feeding distributed to hospital patients.
  • Confer regularly, when appropriate, with obstetricians, pediatricians, and nursing staff regarding each patient’s special needs and breastfeeding progress.
Desired Qualifications
  • Fluency in additional languages is preferred.
