About the company

Meta builds Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads, apps that billions of people use to message friends, share photos and video, and follow creators and businesses. Most of its revenue comes from advertising: businesses buy placements across these apps, and Meta's AI systems decide who sees each ad and report the results. Its Meta Superintelligence Labs group builds the company's own AI models, the Meta AI assistant and the Muse agent app. Its Reality Labs unit makes Quest headsets and, with eyewear maker EssilorLuxottica, Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses. Meta was founded as Facebook in 2004 and is based in Menlo Park, California.

What believers are saying

  • A booming ad business backs pay and stock: Meta's revenue rose 28% to $60.8 billion in the June 2026 quarter.
  • AI engineers get vast resources: Meta expects $130 billion to $145 billion of capital spending in 2026.
  • Wearables teams are scaling: in February 2026, Meta sought to double glasses output to 20 million units this year.

What critics are saying

  • Job security is shaky: about 8,000 employees were hit by Meta's May 2026 layoffs, aimed at funding its AI push.
  • Meta's biggest apps still face a breakup fight: the FTC appealed its Instagram and WhatsApp court win in January 2026.
  • Hardware plans get reshuffled: Meta cut about 1,500 Reality Labs jobs in January 2026, shifting from the metaverse to wearables.

What makes Meta unique

  • Meta's four apps form one huge audience: 3.56 billion people used them daily in March 2026.
  • Meta leads smart glasses through eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica: their Ray-Ban and Oakley models sold over 7 million pairs in 2025.
  • Meta builds consumer AI agents in-house: its Muse app, launched September 2026, topped Apple's US free-app chart within ten days.

Meta creates non-voting Class C shares as Zuckerberg threatens to leave California over wealth tax

Meta will issue a new class of non-voting Class C stock, letting chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg keep voting control while raising capital and preparing for a possible California wealth tax. Meta announced the plan alongside third quarter results on Wednesday. Every Class A and Class B share will get one Class C share. Zuckerberg can sell 20% of his new shares right away; the rest can be sold only if he sells or converts an equal number of voting shares. He holds 60.6% of the votes and about 13.4% of the company. A Meta filing says Zuckerberg told directors he might leave California before the November 3 vote on the tax. He agreed to stay in California, or wherever Meta is headquartered, for eight years, and to keep his $1 salary. Revenue rose 26% to $64.6 billion. Free cash flow fell to negative $2.1 billion. Trading of Class C shares begins in late January.

Meta Q3 revenue jumps 26% to $64.6B, beating estimates as Muse tops 10M accounts

Meta Platforms said third-quarter net income rose more than threefold to $9.86 billion, or $3.83 per share, from $2.71 billion a year earlier. Revenue grew 26% to $64.60 billion, above the $63.34 billion analysts expected. The results include a $9.89 billion charge tied to an $18 billion settlement with 48 US states over social media's effects on teen mental health. Without it, earnings would have been $7.40 per share. Chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg said more than 10 million people in the US and Canada have opened accounts for Muse, the AI agent launched in August. Daily active users across Meta's apps rose 3% to 3.64 billion. For the current quarter, Meta forecasts revenue of $73 billion to $76 billion. Shares rose 2.9% in after-hours trading.

Meta ordered to pay $25B for misleading Facebook users about data privacy

A New Mexico judge ordered Meta to pay $25 billion for misleading Facebook users about how it collects and protects their data. The penalty is one of the largest ever imposed on a company. New Mexico sued in 2021 after a UK political consulting firm harvested millions of users' personal data without consent. A jury found in September that Meta committed 43 million violations of the state's consumer protection laws. Meta plans to appeal. Its chief legal officer, C.J. Mahoney, said the ruling makes it "all but impossible to do business in the state of New Mexico." Meta's third-quarter revenue was $64 billion, but legal costs of roughly $10 billion cut operating income 37% to $13 billion.

Meta posts record $64B Q3 revenue, but $9.89B teen lawsuit charge hits earnings

Meta's third-quarter revenue beat Wall Street expectations, but earnings took a hit from a settlement of a lawsuit filed on behalf of teenage social media users. Revenue for the July-to-September period hit a record $64 billion, above the analyst consensus of $63.3 billion. Earnings per share of $3.83 also beat estimates; without legal expenses, they would have been $7.40. The settlement provides for payments of up to about $18.59 billion. Meta booked a $9.89 billion charge for it this quarter. Chief financial officer Susan Li said the company is watching legal developments closely, with several youth-related trials scheduled in the US in the coming months. Meta also announced a 2-for-1 stock split and a new class of Class C shares, offered to existing shareholders from January 2027. Proceeds will help fund its AI spending, and the move lets chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg retain control.

Meta beats Q3 estimates with $64.6B revenue but holds back 2027 guidance

Meta beat Wall Street estimates in its third quarter, with revenue of $64.6 billion against expectations of $63.3 billion. Earnings per share (EPS) were $3.83, versus estimates of $3.57. The company gave no 2027 revenue outlook, though it expects fourth-quarter revenue of $73 billion to $76 billion. D.A. Davidson's Gil Luria said Meta is holding back capital and operating expense guidance until January, after costs ran out of control and revenue slowed last quarter. Luria said advertising still earns more than all of Meta's profit, as AI losses and Reality Labs losses continue. Better AI ad targeting has kept growth in the 20s, he said, while Google remains in the low teens.
