Subaru takes immense step towards producing its own EVs... finally.

Subaru takes immense step towards producing its own EVs... finally. Subaru is developing its own electric vehicle platform with more power, lighter batteries and improved efficiency promised from 2029. 20 Oct 2026 10:03 AM In a big move away from its current Toyota-shared EV lineup, Subaru has reportedly revealed a new electric vehicle platform that could underpin its next generation of battery-powered models, including high-performance vehicles capable of accelerating from 0-100km/h in under four seconds. As reported by publications Road & Track and Automotive News, the Japanese manufacturer has unveiled an experimental electric vehicle featuring a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing more than 380kW of power, which is significantly more than any of its current electric models. The prototype, which uses a modified previous-generation Outback body, was reportedly demonstrated at Subaru's test facility in Japan. It isn't intended for production, but it previews technology expected to reach future Subaru vehicles from around 2029. That's significant because until now, Subaru's EVs - the Solterra, Trailseeker, Uncharted and US-market Getaway SUVs - have been co-developed with and share a lot with equivalent Toyota models. The prototype in question features a 150kW electric motor at the front and a more powerful 230kW unit at the rear, giving it a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system. The electric motors themselves are have been developed with Aisin, and are claimed to deliver efficiency improvements of around 30 per cent. The platform itself weighs around 100kg less than the current Subaru EVs and a newly-developed battery pack could bring further weight savings. Whichcar don't yet know the size of the battery, but it's been developed in partnership with Panasonic Energy and it uses approximately 4000 cylindrical cells. The battery is claimed to be 25 per cent lighter than the current Subaru EV batteries, with energy density around 20 per cent higher than the industry average. Subaru is also developing a new integrated electronic control system with technology company AMD, allowing greater coordination between vehicle functions and supporting over-the-air software updates. Whether the new platform will eventually underpin an electric WRX or STI performance model remains unknown, although its substantial power output suggests that Subaru is interested in more than simply producing electric SUVs. Subaru Trailseeker wins spot in Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems list. Oct 13, 2026, 13:00 ET * New Subaru Trailseeker makes list in its first year on sale * Trailseeker praised for range, acceleration, and driving ease * 2027 Subaru Trailseeker on sale now, starting at $39,995 MSRP CAMDEN, N.J., Oct. 13, 2026 /PRNewswire/ - Subaru of America, Inc., today announced its Subaru Trailseeker was named to the 2026 Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems list. The judges at WardsAuto praised the Trailseeker for its smooth operation, range, available power, and acceleration. For 2026, Wards evaluated 26 powertrains from returning winners as well as all-new or significantly updated cars, trucks, or SUVs. They were evaluated on several criteria, including power, torque, refinement, efficiency, and innovation. "The ultimate sleeper? Subaru's Trailseeker looks unassuming, yet powers through traffic like a muscle car," said Robin Warner, WardsAuto Judge and 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems Program Manager. "Its 375 horsepower combined with immediate electric powertrain response always satisfies. Its range estimates also hold up well in real-world driving, interstate and all. Yet Subaru keeps the price completely reasonable given such capability, very well done." The Subaru Trailseeker is a go-anywhere, rugged, all-electric SUV that arrived in early 2026. Starting at $39,995 MSRP, the Trailseeker features Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, 375 combined horsepower from dual electric motors, 8.5 inches of ground clearance, up to 281 miles of range on a single charge, and a 14-inch Subaru Multimedia System as standard equipment on all trim levels. Powered by a 74.7-kWh high-capacity lithium-ion battery, the 2027 Subaru Trailseeker includes a standard North American Charging Standard (NACS) charge port, which unlocks access to more than 25,000 charging stations across North America, and can charge from 10% to 80% in as little as 28 minutes at speeds up to 150 kW on a DC-fast charger. With an onboard battery preconditioning system, enabled either by navigating to a charging destination or by the driver via touchscreen controls, the Trailseeker can charge its battery in cold climates - as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit - at speeds comparable to those in normal weather conditions. More information about the Subaru Trailseeker can be found on Subaru's Media Site or at Subaru.com. About Subaru of America, Inc. Subaru of America, Inc. Bathurst drama, stolen corvettes, and recall chaos: what's shaking the automotive world.

Bathurst drama, stolen corvettes, and recall chaos: what's shaking the automotive world. 7 October 2026 The automotive world never takes a break, especially on a Thursday like today, October 8, 2026. As weekend racing looms and recalls threaten to disrupt the calm, the industry is buzzing with energy - some of it good, some of it wild. From the high-speed drama of Supercars at Bathurst to the eerie return of a submerged C7 Corvette, there's no shortage of stories that make you pause, wonder, and maybe even rethink what makes this world so captivating. The blend of performance, controversy, and a little bit of mystery has set the tone for what could be a pivotal week in automotive culture. The Supercars season is heating up with a fiery mix of strategy, engine endurance, and a growing debate over technical fairness. Toyota's new Supra has brought speed to Bathurst 1000, but not without raising eyebrows about its reliability after the grueling 1000km race. Drivers like Ryan Walkinshaw are pushing for more transparency in testing, while Team 18's David Reynolds is facing an uncertain future as the team reevaluates its 2027 lineup. With a new generation of cars entering the grid and old guard veterans still competing, the balance between innovation and parity is under intense scrutiny. Bathurst 1000: Supra speed meets technical struggles. Toyota's arrival at Bathurst 1000 was met with high hopes, but not all things went smoothly. The Supra, known for its sharp handling and powerful engine, delivered impressive pace on the track, yet durability issues have sparked concern. During a grueling 1000km race, questions arose over whether the car's engine could sustain the demands of such a long event. Ryan Walkinshaw, a prominent figure in Supercars, voiced concerns about the lack of clear data-sharing when it comes to testing parity. The debate isn't just about performance - it's about fairness and the integrity of the sport. Meanwhile, Team 18 is in a delicate position as they weigh their options for 2027, with David Reynolds possibly on the outside looking in. Recalls: from subarus to rivians, safety remains top priority. Safety remains at the forefront of automotive attention this week, with several recalls making headlines. Subaru is addressing a hybrid transmission issue in its Forester, which could lead to unexpected power loss during driving. The company has issued a recall affecting certain model years, urging owners to schedule service immediately. Meanwhile, Rivian is dealing with a potential drive power loss in its R2 electric truck due to a loose connection - a problem that could leave drivers stranded if not resolved quickly. Ram is also recalling 149 of its 1500 pickups over faulty daytime running lights, a seemingly minor issue that could pose visibility risks on the road. A stolen Corvette resurfaces after years underwater - what does it mean? In a story that seems like it belongs in a movie, a stolen C7 Corvette has resurfaced after years underwater. According to Carscoops, the car was found in a submerged location and while it's clear that the vehicle suffered irreparable damage, its reappearance is both shocking and surreal. The incident brings to light the strange and sometimes dark side of automotive culture - where cars aren't just machines but symbols of identity, freedom, and even obsession. It also raises questions about how stolen vehicles are tracked and recovered, especially in cases involving long-term disappearances. Industry trends: the push for data-driven racing and fair play. As motorsport continues to evolve, there's an increasing demand for data-driven decision-making over politics and speculation. Team principals like Adrian Burgess have called for a shift in how decisions are made, advocating for transparency and measurable outcomes rather than gut feelings or public opinion. This movement reflects broader trends across the automotive industry - where performance is being scrutinized not just on track but through analytics, efficiency, and safety compliance. What this all means for car enthusiasts. This week's events are a reminder that the world of cars is never static - it's full of twists, turns, and unexpected moments. For enthusiasts, whether they're watching races from the sidelines or sitting in their garages with a cup of coffee, these stories serve as a vivid reminder of why Yourcarsold love this industry. From the thrill of a high-speed race to the urgency of a safety recall, every moment plays a role in shaping the future of automotive culture. The drama at Bathurst, the strange return of a Corvette, and the ongoing push for fairness in racing all point toward a vibrant, ever-evolving space where passion and performance collide. As Yourcarsold move forward into what promises to be another intense weekend of racing, one thing is clear: the automotive world will keep surprising Yourcarsold. And that's exactly what makes it so compelling.
