About the Job

Requirements

  • A strong track record building and operating production systems.
  • Python and SQL skills at production quality, including idiomatic, well-tested, maintainable pipeline code and BigQuery SQL involving table-valued functions and views.
  • Deep experience with at least one major cloud provider—Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, or Microsoft Azure—and its operations.
  • Experience with observability tooling, including Prometheus, PromQL, and Grafana; writing recording rules and building monitoring that engineering teams rely on.
  • Ability to gather requirements and work across organizational boundaries in an ambiguous environment with limited direction.
  • A bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience; a field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Responsibilities

  • Build the planning and allocation stack used by leadership to allocate capacity, teams to plan against allocations, and the scheduler to enforce them, including cross-region and cross-provider placement, guardrails, queueing, and occupancy key performance indicators.
  • Drive efficiency programs covering stranded and right-sized resources, unused-capacity recovery, and job-level utilization across training, inference, and evaluation; establish per-configuration baselines and work with system-owning teams to close gaps.
  • Own attribution and forecasting by reconciling billing across more than ten providers against telemetry and internal systems, attributing spend to workloads, and turning demand signals and research roadmaps into a defensible compute plan and supply pipeline.
  • Build the underlying data platform, including pipelines ingesting occupancy, utilization, and cost data from a diversifying fleet into BigQuery, with ownership of completeness, latency service-level objectives, and gap detection; integrate each new provider.
  • Operate Kubernetes-native systems at scale, including collection agents, workload labeling, and taint, reservation, and scheduling behavior that determines usable capacity.
  • Treat the output as a product by gathering requirements, defining schema contracts, and designing for consumers from research engineers to a chief financial officer, including on-call and service-level objectives.
  • Build production systems for capacity engineering, including data pipelines that ingest and normalize telemetry from heterogeneous cloud environments, observability tooling for real-time fleet health visibility, and performance instrumentation to measure workload efficiency on hardware.
  • Write production-quality code daily and operate alongside Kubernetes-native infrastructure at meaningful scale.
  • Collaborate with research engineering, infrastructure, inference, and finance teams.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with capacity planning, resource management, or cost attribution systems at a hyperscaler or in a large-scale machine learning environment; product engineering and developer experience also count.
  • Scheduling and packing efficiency experience, or profiling-driven optimization of large distributed workloads.
  • Multi-cloud data ingestion experience, especially normalizing billing exports, reservation APIs, on-demand capacity reservations, commitments, and vendor telemetry across providers with different billing arrangements.
  • Total cost of ownership and forecasting experience, including determining whether infrastructure growth is causal or correlated with business drivers.
  • Accelerator infrastructure familiarity, including GPU metrics (DCGM), TPU utilization, Trainium power and utilization metrics, or machine learning training and inference systems at the hardware level.
  • Experience building internal data products with self-service access, schema contracts, API serving, documentation, and discoverability.
  • Storage efficiency, retention, and lifecycle program experience at exabyte scale.

About the Company

Anthropic

Builds Claude AI models with a focus on safety

Anthropic builds the Claude family of AI models and sells them to businesses, software developers, and consumers, with research on making AI safe and understandable at the center of its work. In 2024 it introduced the Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting AI assistants to outside apps and data that OpenAI and Google adopted the next year. People use the Claude app to write and analyze files, programmers hand coding tasks to Claude Code, and companies build Claude into their own products through its API. Anthropic earns money from subscriptions, business plans, and usage-based API fees. Siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei founded Anthropic in 2021 with other former OpenAI employees, and it is based in San Francisco.
