Harmonic launches Recon fiber monitoring solution developed with Comcast

Harmonic has launched Recon, a network monitoring solution developed with Comcast, to help broadband operators detect and resolve network issues faster. The product family is built on Comcast's XMFR fiber monitoring technology, which has been proven in Comcast's own network. Recon combines in-network monitoring hardware and handheld diagnostic tools with cloud-based software to provide real-time visibility across fiber infrastructure. The solution integrates with Harmonic's cOS SensAI intelligence fabric to proactively detect faults and validate fixes. The technology continuously monitors network performance to identify degradation or fiber cuts and provides precise location information to network teams. This helps operators detect minor issues before they escalate into large-scale outages and gives field technicians better diagnostic information. Harmonic plans to expand the Recon family over time as part of its broader network intelligence portfolio.

Comcast deploys fiber sensing technology to detect network threats in real time

Comcast has deployed fiber sensing technology that uses its fiber lines to detect and identify activity around its network in real time. The system analyses vibrations travelling through fiber to spot events such as construction near buried lines, providing early warnings of potential damage. The technology can distinguish between different types of activity, like subway trains or construction equipment, and pinpoint their location. Comcast is exploring combining fiber sensing with AI to enable capabilities such as automatically dispatching drones to assess network damage or wildfires. Chief Network Officer Elad Nafshi said the technology helps deliver "a more reliable, responsive and resilient experience for customers". The deployment builds on Comcast's broader effort to make its network more intelligent and automated through distributed software, telemetry and AI.

Comcast and Fastly deploy edge computing to boost Peacock's live sports streaming quality

Comcast and Fastly have partnered with NBCUniversal to improve streaming quality for Peacock's live sports events by moving content closer to viewers. The collaboration runs Fastly's content delivery software directly on Comcast's distributed network of over 200 edge computing centres across the US. The approach addresses the massive infrastructure demands of live sports streaming, where millions of viewers arrive simultaneously. By processing content within Comcast's network rather than from centralised external locations, the system reduces duplicate traffic and delivery distances. The model particularly benefits major sporting events on Peacock, including NFL, NBA, and MLB games. Beyond live streaming, the underlying technology could support gaming, cybersecurity, AI inference, and enterprise cloud services. Comcast continues exploring additional applications for its edge computing resources.

Comcast expands fiber to rural US communities amid broadband subscriber pressures

Comcast has expanded its Xfinity and Comcast Business fiber networks to thousands of homes and businesses across New Hampshire, Minnesota, and South Carolina. The buildouts, supported by public-private partnerships, bring multi-gigabit symmetrical internet to previously underserved rural communities. In New Hampshire alone, Comcast added nearly 4,700 new connections in Milton and New Durham. The expansion aims to grow the company's addressable market through bundled connectivity, security, and mobile services. However, analysts remain cautious about Comcast's broadband business amid subscriber losses and intensifying competition from fixed internet providers. The company also faces weaker theme park attendance. Analysts project Comcast's revenue will decline 1.1% annually through 2029, though earnings are expected to grow modestly from $11.2 billion to $11.3 billion.

Cable ISPs quietly raise autopay bills from $50 to $95+ over 36 months, costing loyal customers $840 extra

Consumer advocate Clark Howard warned on his 23 September 2026 podcast that cable internet providers are "gouging" customers on autopay by steadily increasing bills. Charter Communications and Comcast quietly raise promotional rates from around $50 to $95 or more over 36 months, costing loyal customers an extra $840 over two years. Charter lost 172,000 internet customers in Q2 2026, whilst Comcast lost 167,000 domestic broadband subscribers. Yet Charter's revenue grew 4% year-over-year through "promotional rate step-ups and rate adjustments". Howard recommends calling retention lines and citing competitor rates from fibre or fixed wireless providers like Verizon or T-Mobile, which offer service at roughly $40 monthly. Charter shares have fallen 56% over the past year to $118, whilst Comcast dropped 20% to around $23.
