About the Job

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing, Electrical, or a related Engineering discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Three to seven or more years of process or manufacturing engineering experience, including direct involvement in automated equipment specification, procurement, or deployment.
  • Working knowledge of automation fundamentals, including programmable logic controller and human-machine interface logic, robotics, vision systems, sensors, conveyance, and basic controls concepts; programming is not always required, but technical literacy is expected.
  • Familiarity with machine safety standards such as ANSI B11, OSHA, NFPA 79, or regional equivalents, and risk assessment methods.
  • Proficiency with computer-aided design software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar for reviewing layouts and fixture/tooling designs.
  • Experience with process capability and quality tools, including PFMEA, control plans, statistical process control, Gage R&R, and root cause analysis.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Excel.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple concurrent equipment projects and vendor relationships.
  • Ability to translate operator and process needs into clear technical specifications for equipment vendors.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to build data-driven justifications for capital investment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication across engineering, operations, and leadership audiences.
  • A hands-on, floor-based approach and comfort working on the shop floor with operators, technicians, and vendors.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with equipment vendors and internal stakeholders, including engineering, quality, maintenance, EHS, and operations, during the design and specification phase of new automated equipment.
  • Develop and review User Requirement Specifications, Functional Design Specifications, and technical requirements to ensure equipment meets process, quality, ergonomic, and safety needs.
  • Evaluate vendor proposals and machine designs, including mechanical, controls, programmable logic controller/human-machine interface logic, fixturing, tooling, and material handling, for technical soundness, manufacturability, and fit with existing processes.
  • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments such as PFMEA and machine risk assessments, and layout and ergonomic evaluations before build.
  • Identify and document process, tooling, and facility requirements, including utilities, footprint, fixturing, and material flow, needed to support new equipment.
  • Build technical and financial justifications for capital projects by quantifying current-state process limitations such as cycle time, scrap, labor, downtime, and ergonomics, and projected improvements from automation.
  • Represent process engineering on cross-functional project teams from kickoff through handover to production.
  • Participate in Factory Acceptance Testing at vendor sites and Site Acceptance Testing after installation to confirm equipment meets contractual and process specifications.
  • Support installation, rigging, utility hook-up coordination, and startup activities in collaboration with maintenance and facilities.
  • Drive equipment qualification activities, including IQ/OQ/PQ, capability studies, and Gage R&R as applicable, to confirm machines consistently produce to specification.
  • Track open issues, punch lists, and vendor commitments through resolution, ensuring root-cause closure of performance gaps identified during ramp-up.
  • Coordinate training for operators, technicians, and maintenance staff on new equipment operation and troubleshooting.
  • Study current manual, semi-automated, or legacy processes to understand process flow, cycle times, failure modes, and constraints as input to automation project scope.
  • Develop, document, and maintain standard operating procedures, work instructions, control plans, and process parameter sheets for new and existing equipment.
  • Modify or optimize existing processes and equipment settings to improve safety, quality, cycle time, uptime, and cost.
  • Lead or support root cause analysis and corrective actions for equipment- or process-related quality or downtime issues, using methods such as 8D, 5-Why, and fishbone analysis.
  • Apply Lean/Six Sigma and continuous improvement methods to identify and eliminate waste and build the business case for future automation investment.
  • Maintain process documentation, control plans, and PFMEAs in alignment with quality system requirements such as IATF 16949 and ISO 9001, as applicable.
  • Provide ongoing engineering support for automated equipment after launch, including troubleshooting, minor design modifications, and performance monitoring of OEE, downtime, and scrap trends.
  • Collaborate with maintenance and controls engineering on preventive maintenance plans, spare parts strategy, and obsolescence management for new equipment.
  • Work with EHS to ensure machine guarding, lockout/tagout, and safety systems meet regulatory and company standards before and after deployment.
  • Communicate project status, risks, and equipment performance to engineering leadership and plant stakeholders.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience writing or reviewing User Requirement Specifications and Functional Design Specifications, and participating in Factory Acceptance Testing and Site Acceptance Testing, is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with project management tools such as MS Project or Smartsheet is a plus.
  • Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma exposure, with Green Belt or higher preferred.
