Requirements
  • Graduate of a school of vocational nursing.
  • Current licensure as a Vocational Nurse in the State of Texas, or immediate eligibility for licensure.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required within 30 days of employment and before independently administering patient care.
  • Visual and hearing acuity, including color vision, are required for perceiving changes in patients’ skin color and the colors of medicines and solutions.
  • Ability to frequently stand, walk, lift, carry, push, pull, and reach, and occasionally sit, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist.
  • Ability to work with possible exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals or detergents, moving mechanical parts, potential electric shock, radiant energy, communicable diseases, and blood-borne pathogens.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct nursing care to assigned patients under the general supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Perform approved nursing procedures, patient-care procedures, and treatments, including care for patients with complicated nursing problems and patients in critical condition.
  • Assist with the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care.
  • Serve as a patient advocate within the healthcare system.
  • Assist patients with daily care and activities and maintain their safety, comfort, care, and treatment according to established standards.
  • Use the nursing process to plan, provide, document, and evaluate care.
  • Collect data for Registered Nurse nursing assessments through ongoing and systematic data collection.
  • Coordinate and plan nursing-care delivery with a multidisciplinary team and administer appropriate clinical decisions in patient care.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to develop plans of care and implement identified interventions.
  • Evaluate patients’ progress toward expected outcomes and communicate effectively with physicians and other team members.
  • Provide patient and family teaching based on individual patient needs.
  • Administer and reconcile medications appropriately.
  • Adhere to infection-prevention protocols and protect patient confidentiality, including appropriate handling of protected health information.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary program evaluation, process improvement, and client-centered outcomes activities.
  • Participate in survey-readiness activities and maintain department compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and report safety concerns appropriately.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of Medical/Surgical experience is preferred.
  • Serve as a preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff.
  • Participate in mandatory and continuing education and competence validation.
