About the Job

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience in decision planning, system architecture, control, or in-vehicle software development.
  • Strong understanding of behavioral decision state machines, trajectory or command arbitration logic, and the overall data flow across autonomous-driving perception, prediction, planning, and control.
  • Proficiency in modern C++ (C++11 or later), including multithreaded synchronization, memory management, and real-time analysis.
  • Knowledge of FMEA and FTA fault analysis methods, ability to identify and handle fault scenarios, and system-level thinking to decompose modules and design interfaces.
  • Ability to independently analyze complex system faults and produce technical documentation.
  • Responsibility, quality awareness, and ability to communicate across teams.

Responsibilities

  • Design system-level safety architecture from functional safety requirements, decompose safety functions into implementable fault detection, isolation, arbitration, and emergency-intervention modules, define module interfaces, responsibilities, and interaction timing, and produce detailed design documentation (DDS).
  • Develop a fault-aggregation safety decision module for monitoring and classifying abnormal signals, isolating faults, executing safety commands, and managing transitions from normal to emergency mode and then to safe stop.
  • Develop an extensible health-monitoring framework covering LiDAR, radar, ultrasonic sensors, and IMU, as well as chassis and actuator feedback.
  • Design complete lifecycle management for vehicle operating states, including state definitions, transition logic, fault recovery, and manual takeover.
  • Design system-level test cases covering critical failure paths, boundary conditions, extreme operating conditions, and concurrent faults; validate fault injection, fault-sequence timing, response latency, accuracy, and other performance metrics in simulation.
  • Collaborate with requirements stakeholders and decision-planning, control, and systems teams to clarify safety requirements, participate in design reviews, support acceptance testing, and maintain technical documentation and version tracking.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience developing in-vehicle software on Linux or RTOS/QNX.
  • Familiarity with the basic processes of ISO 26262 functional safety or SOTIF (ISO 21448); this knowledge is preferred, not mandatory.
  • Work experience in autonomous driving, connected vehicles, or new energy vehicles, or project experience in closed environments such as mines, ports, or industrial parks.
  • Project experience with functional safety (ISO 26262) or SOTIF.
  • Experience designing MRM (Minimal Risk Maneuver), safety-redundancy architectures, or arbitration strategies for concurrent faults.

About the Company

Caterpillar

Makes heavy machinery, engines and gas turbines

Caterpillar makes construction and mining machines, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and locomotives for contractors, mines, energy companies and data center builders. It is the world's largest maker of construction and mining equipment, and its yellow Cat bulldozers and excavators work in nearly every country. Customers buy or rent machines through independent Cat dealers, while its engines and turbines generate electricity and push natural gas through pipelines. Caterpillar earns money from equipment sales and from the parts and repairs that dealers supply over a machine's working life. It was formed in 1925 when California's Holt and Best tractor companies merged, and it is based in Irving, Texas.
