About the Job

Requirements

  • A B.S. or M.S. in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field is required.
  • At least 2 years of experience in vacuum thin-film deposition, academic or industry.
  • Hands-on experience operating vacuum systems such as thermal evaporators, sputter coaters, or similar equipment.
  • Basic understanding of thin-film growth physics, including nucleation, crystal orientation, and stress.
  • Familiarity with standard thin-film characterization techniques, including profilometry, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and optical spectroscopy.
  • Ability to work safely with vacuum equipment, compressed gases, and laboratory chemicals.
  • Strong documentation habits and attention to experimental detail.

Responsibilities

  • Operate thermal evaporation, co-evaporation, and sputtering systems to deposit thin-film layers according to established recipes and design-of-experiments plans.
  • Perform routine film characterization, including thickness measurement, profilometry, four-point probe measurements, optical transmission, and X-ray diffraction sample preparation.
  • Maintain vacuum deposition equipment, including changing sources, cleaning chambers, maintaining pumps, and preparing substrate fixtures.
  • Record experimental data and maintain lab notebooks to research-grade documentation standards.
  • Analyze process data, present results to the team, identify trends, and propose recipe modifications.
  • Support design-of-experiments campaigns by preparing substrates, executing run matrices, and compiling results.
  • Assist with equipment commissioning, qualification runs, and process capability studies.
  • Contribute to process documentation, standard operating procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with the device integration team to provide films that meet target specifications on schedule.
  • Perform routine laboratory maintenance, including chamber cleaning, pump oil changes, source replacements, substrate fixture reconditioning, and general lab upkeep.
  • Manage inventory of targets, crucibles, substrates, and gases, and coordinate reorders to prevent supply interruptions.
  • Maintain laboratory cleanliness and organization and chemical inventory records; support hazardous waste collection and disposal.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues, including leak detection, pressure anomalies, and source failures, and coordinate vendor service when needed.

Desired Qualifications

  • An M.S. with thesis work involving vacuum deposition of photovoltaic or optoelectronic materials.
  • Experience with multi-source co-evaporation or reactive sputtering.
  • Familiarity with perovskite, CIGS, CdTe, or organic semiconductor materials.
  • Experience with quartz crystal microbalance-based deposition rate monitoring.
  • Knowledge of design-of-experiments methodology and statistical analysis tools such as JMP, Minitab, Python, or R.
  • Experience in a cleanroom or controlled-environment laboratory setting.
  • Coursework or research in photovoltaic device physics.

About the Company

Blue Origin

Builds rockets, engines and lunar spacecraft

Blue Origin builds rockets, engines and spacecraft for commercial satellite operators and government space programs. Its New Glenn orbital rocket uses a reusable first stage, while Blue Moon landers are designed to transport cargo and astronauts to the lunar surface. The company designs and manufactures liquid-fueled propulsion systems, and its New Shepard vehicle is built for short suborbital trips carrying people and research payloads. Customers pay for launch services and engines, and government development contracts fund work on systems for exploration beyond Earth orbit. Founded by Jeff Bezos in 2000, Blue Origin is headquartered in Kent, Washington.
