About the job

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or relevant professional experience is required.
  • At least 10 years of relevant professional experience in software or data engineering, including building production data pipelines and data platforms.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a lead capacity, including team leadership, task breakdown, reviews, delivery ownership, and cross-functional coordination.
  • Experience directly managing a team, including hiring, interviewing, and conducting formal performance reviews.
  • Hands-on experience with Databricks (Spark), Boomi/Rivery, and Delta Lake patterns for scalable lakehouse processing.
  • Experience with ETL/ELT design and implementation, including orchestration and ingestion into transformation workflows across curated layers.
  • Experience partnering with application and database teams to define efficient, non-disruptive data access patterns for upstream SQL Server systems, including read replicas, change data capture, snapshot isolation, and batching strategies.
  • Expertise implementing Medallion architecture with clear separation across Bronze, Silver, and Gold, including enforcing guardrails such as preventing consumers from reading from Bronze.
  • Understanding of ingestion/source variability, including APIs, change data capture-enabled databases, and file drops, and ability to select ingestion strategies based on source contracts.
  • Track record of improving team maturity from reactive delivery to repeatable engineering execution through standards, patterns, documentation, and predictable throughput.
  • Experience working cross-functionally and promoting collaborative partnerships to drive results.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to varied audiences and levels, internally and externally, including leadership and through varied mediums.
  • Ability to present and convey material formally and informally to all levels of an organization.

Responsibilities
  • Manage a team by hiring and onboarding talent, setting clear expectations, conducting formal performance reviews, and coaching accountability.
  • Lead the team in delivering the enterprise data platform roadmap by translating architecture direction into sequenced execution plans, team backlogs, and measurable outcomes.
  • Establish engineering standards for maintainability, organization, and repeatability; grow engineers through regular one-to-ones, timely feedback, development plans, and formal review cycles; and own team performance and cohesion.
  • Own day-to-day execution for the Data Engineering team by breaking work into tasks, driving sprint-level planning, delegating to grow ownership, unblocking delivery, and ensuring quality through engineering reviews and feedback.
  • Drive implementation of Medallion architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold), enforce layer responsibilities, and ensure repeatable, auditable pipeline behavior using Boomi, dbt, Azure Databricks, Boomi/Rivery, Delta tables, and SQL Server.
  • Partner with the Data Architect to translate architecture into implementation patterns, reference pipelines, and guardrails.
  • Drive clear decisions and progress using lightweight decision records, obtaining appropriate input, and executing accountability without excessive process.
  • Establish DataOps practices aligned with the software development lifecycle, including continuous integration and continuous delivery for data assets, branching and release patterns, code review standards, and pipeline runbooks and operational readiness.
  • Improve pipeline observability and operational reliability by monitoring freshness/staleness, failure modes, and quality signals, and ensuring predictable responses to incidents and support requests.
  • Partner with business stakeholders to clarify requirements, reduce ad hoc work, and shape requests into scoped deliverables aligned with platform strategy.
  • Develop future leaders and succession plans for key roles through assignment of recurring responsibilities, mentoring, and strategic delegation.

Skillable expands into academic market with virtual IT labs and skill validation platform

Skillable, a provider of performance-based learning and skill validation solutions, is expanding its virtual IT labs and hands-on training offerings into the academic market. The move follows successful agreements with leading universities including Western Governors University and Grand Canyon University, as well as strategic distribution partnerships across higher education globally. The company has appointed Faith Harper, formerly of LinkedIn, as Senior Business Development Director for Academic Markets to lead the expansion. The platform aims to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world performance, addressing employer concerns about graduate readiness. Research from Deloitte found that only one-third of employers believe graduates possess the necessary workplace skills. Skillable's hands-on solutions complement traditional exam preparation and coursework, helping students develop practical technology skills increasingly required in AI-driven workplaces.
