Batavia patients can now get new heart scan in the ER at United Memorial Medical Center.

Batavia patients can now get new heart scan in the ER at United Memorial Medical Center. Garrett Chan News10NBC Updated: October 21, 2026 - 3:23 PM Published: October 21, 2026 - 1:45 PM BATAVIA, N.Y. - Rochester Regional Health's United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia launched its HeartFlow CT-FFR program this week, bringing new technology to evaluate coronary artery disease to rural communities. Doctors and hospital leaders said the program lets them assess patients in the emergency room and decide if they need to be transferred for more advanced tests or treatment. "The patient is in the scanner for a couple of minutes while it's running. But, the patient comes in, they get an IV. We inject a dye, and they are in the CT scan for a few minutes to acquire the images, and then the patient can go home. And usually the cardiologists will report these findings in the next couple of hours," Dr. Bipul Baibhav said. Dr. Baibhav said the program is more accurate than traditional stress testing because it uses artificial intelligence. He said the new program prevents invasive procedures like angiograms and uses less radiation than a nuclear stress test. "The AI model that is used for this, it, the heart flow technology use what we call computational fluid dynamics. It's very well validated through multiple research studies...So with this modeling or 3D modeling, we can determine more accurately, is this blockage actually causing flow limitation?" Baibhav said. Closure of birthing center at Newark-Wayne. The program's rollout comes just months after the hospital system decided to close the Newark-Wayne Birthing Center. "But ultimately, that decision was around what opportunity and what do we have as far as those clinical specialists that we need to be able to provide that level of care? We have an aging community, in Wayne County, in the surrounding counties...So that's ultimately what really drove that decision was, was where do we have the physician, the personnel resource, to continue providing this sort of high, high level, high quality and high standard," Michael Rulffes, president and COO of United Memorial Medical Center, said. Rulffes said it does not anticipate closing more Rochester Regional Health rural care facilities soon. "We want to continue progressing forward with increased services, better access to care. So we are continually always looking at and focusing on how do we continue to expand our primary care access, our specialty access in the community," Rulffes said. Dr. Baibhav said doctors will be doing routine quality assurance of cardiac imaging as the program continues to roll out to other rural areas. Rochester Regional Health said it wants to expand the cardiac technology to other rural hospitals, including Clifton Springs and Newark-Wayne. The new cardiac care program is covered by all health insurances.
