IKEA BADKRUKA: the $60 Swedish speaker that won't swim but will connect to your TV.

IKEA BADKRUKA: the $60 Swedish speaker that won't swim but will connect to your TV. Is it possible for a $60 Bluetooth speaker to improve your TV's sound? IKEA's BADKRUKA adds optical input, stereo pairing, 25W output and Spotify Tap. 2 hours ago Leave it to IKEA to name its new indoor Bluetooth speaker BADKRUKA, a Swedish word for someone who is reluctant or afraid to get into cold water. That is particularly appropriate because the $59.99 BADKRUKA carries only an IP20 rating and has absolutely no business going swimming. The name may be amusing, but IKEA has taken a surprisingly practical approach to the speaker itself. BADKRUKA combines Bluetooth with 3.5mm analog and optical digital inputs, along with Spotify Tap, three EQ settings, multi-speaker operation and the ability to pair two BADKRUKA speakers for actual stereo playback. IKEA even includes the optical cable. That does not suddenly make BADKRUKA a $60 replacement for a serious pair of active loudspeakers. We have not heard it yet. But IKEA has given budget buyers considerably more flexibility than we normally see at this price. IKEA has been rebuilding its audio lineup since ending its long-running partnership with Sonos. We previously looked at the company's BLOMPRAKT and NATTBAD Bluetooth speakers and the end of the IKEA and Sonos SYMFONISK collaboration. More than another Bluetooth box. BADKRUKA uses a woofer and tweeter configuration powered by 25 watts of total amplification, with IKEA specifying a frequency range of 50Hz to 20kHz at -6 dB. The enclosure measures 6.25 inches wide and deep and 6.875 inches tall, making it small enough for a desk, bedroom or shelf beside a television. The optical input is what changes the equation. Most modern televisions still provide an optical digital output, which means BADKRUKA can function as a very inexpensive alternative to the television's built-in speakers. Buy two and IKEA says they can operate as a stereo pair with distinct left and right channels. There is no HDMI ARC here, so television volume control will not be as seamless as it would be with a soundbar or more sophisticated active loudspeaker system. IKEA also does not list Wi-Fi streaming, AirPlay, Google Cast or other network playback features. At $59.99, that feels less like an omission than a reminder of what this thing costs. Spotify Tap and multi-speaker playback. BADKRUKA supports Spotify Tap, allowing playback to resume from a paired device with a button press. Pressing the Spotify button again can generate another selection based on the listener's history. IKEA has also included its multi-speaker mode, which allows BADKRUKA to play alongside other compatible IKEA Bluetooth speakers. That mode distributes the same mono signal to multiple speakers, while stereo pairing is reserved for two BADKRUKA units. Three built-in EQ settings provide some control over the presentation, although IKEA does not provide detailed response curves for the presets. BADKRUKA vs. NATTBAD. The more interesting comparison comes from inside IKEA's own catalog. The existing NATTBAD costs $49.99 and provides 10 watts of amplification through a single 2.8-inch full-range driver, with a specified frequency range of 75Hz to 18.5kHz. It supports Bluetooth, Spotify Tap and multi-speaker playback but does not offer stereo pairing, optical or 3.5mm analog input. For another $10, BADKRUKA increases rated output to 25 watts, uses separate woofer and tweeter drivers, extends the claimed low-frequency response to 50Hz and adds both wired inputs and stereo operation. We have not compared the two sonically, so specifications should not be confused with a listening test. But unless the smaller NATTBAD design is the primary attraction, BADKRUKA looks like the much stronger value on paper. IKEA BADKRUKA Specifications. * Speaker Configuration: Woofer and tweeter * Total Power Output: 25 watts * Frequency Range: 50Hz to 20kHz (-6 dB) * Wireless Input: Bluetooth * Digital Input: Optical TOSLINK * Analog Input: 3.5mm * Spotify Tap: Yes * Stereo Pairing: Yes * Multi-Speaker Mode: Yes * EQ: 3 settings * IP Rating: IP20 * Dimensions: 6.25 x 6.25 x 6.875 inches * Included Accessory: Optical cable * Designer: Ola Wihlborg The bottom line. We are not expecting the IKEA BADKRUKA to send KEF, Sonos or Audioengine executives scrambling into emergency meetings. That would be asking rather a lot from something sold by the same company that expects you to assemble your own dresser with an Allen key. What makes BADKRUKA interesting is that IKEA has resisted turning it into another Bluetooth-only lifestyle product. Optical and analog inputs make it useful with televisions, computers and other sources, while stereo pairing gives buyers an inexpensive upgrade path if one speaker is not enough. At $59.99 each, a pair costs $119.98. That might be the more interesting story. Price & Availability. The IKEA BADKRUKA Bluetooth Speaker is $59.99 each at IKEA in the United States in black and pink finishes. Availability may vary by store and delivery location. Sonos 27 adds AI control, new ways to move sound, and an easier app experience to your Sonos system.

Sonos 27 adds AI control, new ways to move sound, and an easier app experience to your Sonos system. SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Sept. 2026 - Sonos (Nasdaq: SONO) has begun rolling out Sonos 27, the next generation of its audio operating system. The update gives listeners AI control through outside assistants and agents, portable speakers that automatically become home theater surrounds, and a more intuitive app. It also introduces headphone linking, an Early Access feature that lets headphones connect directly into the Sonos system for the first time, starting with Sonos Ace Ultra. "Most of the tech industry ships new capability by shipping new hardware, but we built Sonos differently," said Tom Conrad, CEO of Sonos. "Our system grows more capable and smarter over time, so whichever Sonos product you already have at home can do more today than it did last year. That's exactly what's rolling out with Sonos 27." Control your Sonos system with AI Sonos is expanding its open platform to give listeners the choice to control their system with whichever AI they already use. Available now in Early Access, Sonos 27mcp lets you connect Sonos to any outside AI, including ChatGPT and Claude. Seamlessly adjust your music while using their platforms to stay in the moment, instead of interrupting it. Sonos 27mcp is built on the Model Context Protocol, the open standard for connecting AI to outside applications, and hosted at mcp.ws.sonos.com/mcp. "We're excited to see Sonos join the MCP ecosystem and build an integration for Claude," said Den Delimarsky, Lead Maintainer of MCP and Member of Technical Staff at Anthropic. "This integration will enable Sonos customers to do more with their devices directly from Claude, such as controlling sound without breaking their flow." Coming later this Fall, Sonos 27voice is the system's new AI-powered assistant, made to understand music, mood, and control. Built and fine-tuned in-house, Sonos 27voice is trained for the way people actually ask for music: referential and feeling-first. Talk to it like a friend who knows what song you mean, even when you can't remember the title or artist. You can also use it to curate whatever vibe the moment calls for: morning routine, dinner party, or winding down before bed. Just describe the mood you want and Sonos 27voice can build the right soundtrack for you. Sonos also previewed where its open platform goes next in 2027 with Sonos Custom Agents, which will let people create their own agents through the system, each with its own model, persona, and voice. "We don't believe one assistant should own the home. One assistant can't be great at everything," said Nick Millington, Chief Innovation Officer. "Sonos 27voice is great at music and control, and our open platform lets you bring in whatever's great at the rest." Sound that bends to your needs Sonos 27 brings two new features to Sonos Fabric TM, the existing system intelligence that lets Sonos products sense and adapt to each other. Portable surrounds mean your Move 2s or Sonos Plays never have to choose between being your backyard speaker or part of your home theater. Sonos Positioning Technology lets them sense their distance from each other and a nearby soundbar using brief high-frequency audio signals, then switch roles automatically. Set two of the same portable speakers near a compatible soundbar (Arc Ultra, Arc, Beam Ultra, or Beam Gen 2), and they'll do the rest. Once the movie's done, pick them back up, and they're portable speakers again. Headphone linking connects your Sonos Ace Ultra directly into your Sonos system, so you don't need to keep your phone nearby to listen. With one tap, you can push and pull sound between out loud and personal listening, sending it to the closest speaker or straight back into your ears. Headphone linking runs on Sonos Headphone Engine 2, the platform built into Sonos Ace Ultra with redesigned WiFi antennas and secure credential storage, letting the headphones move through the home instead of relying solely on Bluetooth. A more intuitive Sonos 27 app Sonos 27app brings a new way of navigating, organized into Home, System and Search across the bottom, with native swipe gestures and the ability to pin favorite rooms to the top. It was shaped and tested with the Sonos community. iPhone owners can already control playback from the lock screen and Dynamic Island, adding Siri and Shortcuts support, as well as a refreshed iPad layout. Sonos 27app also debuts a new virtual volume knob, which lets you twist two fingers on the screen to adjust volume like turning a dial. Presets, which let you save a set of speakers, content, and volume and return to it with one tap, arrives later this fall alongside new system health views. A system for the way a home feels Sonos is an audio operating system that helps you create the sound experience for your home. Built on an open platform, it brings together every way people want to listen, so you can play anything, any way you want. Every speaker is built to work better together. Add one and the rest get smarter, filling more of the home with sound that's tuned to the room it's actually playing in. Continuous platform enhancements and products designed to work across generations mean the system gets more capable over time. Availability Sonos 27 is available as a free software update to all Sonos S2 products, though feature availability varies by product. The update includes new Sonos 27app navigation and portable surrounds, both available now, along with Sonos 27mcp in Early Access. Headphone linking arrives alongside Sonos Ace Ultra on September 29 as an Early Access feature, Sonos 27voice arrives as an Early Access feature later this Fall, and Sonos Custom Agents is targeted for 2027. Sonos also recently announced two flagship products, Sonos Beam Ultra and Sonos Ace Ultra, available now for pre-order at sonos.com and select retail partners, with general availability starting September 29, 2026. Sonos 27 rolls out with AI control, Portable Surrounds and Ace Ultra Wi-Fi linking.

Sonos 27 rolls out with AI control, Portable Surrounds and Ace Ultra Wi-Fi linking. Can Sonos 27 make existing speakers more useful with AI control, portable rear surrounds and direct Wi-Fi headphone linking? 3 hours ago Sonos has started rolling out Sonos 27, the latest version of its audio operating system, bringing AI control, redesigned app navigation, and one of the more practical home theater ideas we have seen this year: compatible portable speakers that can automatically become wireless rear surrounds and return to portable duty when the movie is over. The free software update is available across Sonos S2 products, although individual features depend on the hardware. It also lays the groundwork for direct Wi-Fi headphone linking with the new Sonos Ace Ultra, which becomes available September 29. Considering Sonos' recent adventures in app development, asking existing customers to embrace another major software overhaul requires a certain amount of courage. Sonos 27, however, appears focused on adding useful capabilities rather than merely rearranging the furniture. Related reading: Portable speakers become rear surrounds. The standout feature is Portable Surrounds, which works with matching pairs of Sonos Move 2 or Sonos Play speakers and compatible Arc Ultra, Arc, Beam Ultra, or Beam Gen 2 soundbars. Sonos Positioning Technology uses brief high-frequency audio signals to determine the distance between the speakers and soundbar. Put two supported portable speakers into position and they can automatically assume rear-channel duties; remove them afterward and they revert to standalone portable speakers. Sonos says the bonding process takes roughly eight seconds. That is genuinely clever because conventional wireless surrounds become semi-permanent fixtures once installed. Sonos is letting hardware serve two purposes without making users repeatedly rebuild the system inside the app. The feature also strengthens the case for the recently announced $699 Beam Ultra, which adds dedicated Dolby Atmos height drivers and is one of the supported soundbars. Sonos opens the door to outside AI. Sonos 27 also introduces Sonos 27mcp in Early Access. Built around Model Context Protocol, it allows outside AI systems including ChatGPT and Claude to communicate with and control a Sonos system. Users can request music or system actions through supported AI tools without first opening the Sonos app. Sonos' own 27voice assistant arrives this fall and is designed specifically around music, mood, and natural-language requests. Sonos Custom Agents are planned for 2027, potentially allowing users to create assistants with their own models, voices, and personalities. Whether your loudspeaker really needs a personality remains debatable, but Sonos' willingness to support outside AI platforms rather than locking everything behind a proprietary assistant is the more interesting decision. Ace Ultra finally becomes part of Sonos. The $449 Sonos Ace Ultra also addresses one of our biggest complaints about the original Ace headphones. Beginning September 29 in Early Access, Headphone Linking lets Ace Ultra connect directly to a Sonos system over Wi-Fi. Users can push or pull audio between nearby Sonos speakers and their headphones without relying solely on a smartphone or Bluetooth connection. That finally makes headphones bearing the Sonos name behave more like an actual Sonos product. The app gets another makeover. Sonos 27app introduces Home, System, and Search tabs, native swipe gestures, room pinning, revised volume controls, and additional grouping options. Sonos is also adding iOS gestures, Android widgets, and deeper Shortcuts support as part of the current rollout. Additional features arriving this fall include a virtual volume knob, quick presets, Siri and Shortcuts support, an optimized iPad interface, and new system-status screens. What makes Sonos 27 different? Sonos is treating its ecosystem less like a collection of wireless speakers and more like adaptable hardware whose role changes through software. Portable speakers becoming temporary surrounds, headphones operating as Wi-Fi system endpoints, and outside AI agents controlling playback are individually interesting. Combining all three inside one interoperable home audio platform is what makes Sonos 27 noteworthy. The closest mainstream competitor remains Bose, whose smart soundbars and speakers support multi-room playback while SimpleSync can connect compatible Bluetooth headphones for private listening. Bose also offers dedicated wireless rear speakers, but it does not currently match Sonos' ability to automatically repurpose portable speakers as temporary surrounds or integrate headphones as Wi-Fi endpoints in the same manner. The bottom line. Sonos 27 is more interesting than another app redesign because it makes existing hardware behave differently. Portable Surrounds solves a legitimate space and flexibility problem, while Ace Ultra Headphone Linking fixes an integration gap that should never have existed with the original Ace. Opening system control to outside AI platforms is potentially important as well, provided it makes playing music easier rather than turning the living room into another AI experiment. Sonos still has to prove that the redesigned software remains stable as these features roll out, but Sonos 27 shows where the company has an advantage over most competitors: the hardware does not necessarily have to be replaced for the system to become more capable. Price & availability. Sonos 27 began rolling out on September 8, 2026 as a free software update for Sonos S2 products. Portable Surrounds and Sonos 27mcp are available now on supported hardware, while Headphone Linking launches September 29 in Early Access with Sonos Ace Ultra. Sonos 27voice arrives this fall, with Custom Agents planned for 2027. Sonos begins rolling out Sonos 27 app update.

Sonos begins rolling out Sonos 27 app update. Sonos announced that it's begun rolling out Sonos 27, its next-generation audio operating system. "Most of the tech industry ships new capability by shipping new hardware, but we built Sonos differently," Sonos CEO Tom Conrad says. "Our system grows more capable and smarter over time, so whichever Sonos product you already have at home can do more today than it did last year. That's exactly what's rolling out with Sonos 27." Sonos announced Sonos 27 alongside its new Sonos Beam Ultra soundbar and Sonos Ace Ultra headphones last week. It appears to be an impressive step forward, not just for adding new capabilities to Sonos smart speaker systems but also for a company still living in the shadow of its 2024 Sonosgate debacle. Sonos 27app. The Sonos app is getting a major refresh with new Home, System, and Search tabs available at the bottom, swipe gestures - including a fun two finger gesture that lets you adjust playback volume as if you're spinning a physical knob on-screen - support for more Favorites pins, Siri and Shortcuts support on iPhone and iPad, and a refreshed app layout on iPad. (Sonos previously added Live Activity support on iPhone, and a similar feature is coming soon on Android.) Sonos Fabric. This is the new name for the underlying Sonos service that lets Sonos products sense and, now, adapt to each other. The following two features are considered part of Sonos Fabric. Portable surrounds. This new feature lets those with two Move 2 or Sonos Play portable speakers position them in a room with a Sonos Arc Ultra, Arc, Beam Ultra, or Beam Gen 2 soundbar and have them be automatically configured as rear speakers in a home theater setup. You can later move them elsewhere in the home normally, or use them outside, and they will perform as portable speakers again. Under the covers, the new Sonos Positioning Technology uses high-frequency audio signals to let each compatible speaker sense their distance from each other and a nearby soundbar to switch their roles automatically. Headphone linking. This feature is unique to the new Sonos Ace Ultra headphones, which can connect to a Sonos home system so you can redirect audio in both directions. "With one tap, you can push and pull sound between out loud and personal listening, sending it to the closest speaker or straight back into your ears," Sonos explains. This feature uses a secure new Sonos Headphone Engine 2 capability to let the headphones move through your home without relying on Bluetooth. Sonos27mcp in Early Access. This expansive new extensibility capability lets users connect their Sonos system to any outside AI assistant, including Anthropic Claude, OpenAI ChatGPT, and many others, so they can control music playback using the AI of their choice. It's built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard for connecting AI to outside applications. Later this fall, Sonos will add Sonos27voice, the company's new AI assistant, and Sonos Custom Agents, which will let customers create multiple AI agents, each with its own AI model, personality, and voice, to the platform. Sonos will also add two new app features, Presets - which will let you save a set of speakers, content, and volume so you can return to that configuration easily - and System health views, later this fall too. Sonos just launched 'Sonos 27' app update, here's what's new.

Sonos just launched 'Sonos 27' app update, here's what's new. Last week Sonos unveiled several new features coming to its app soon, and now the first of those upgrades are here in the 'Sonos 27' app update. Here are the details. Here's what Sonos says is new and coming soon with Sonos 27 software. Following the example of iOS 27 and others, Sonos is moving to a 'Sonos 27' naming scheme for its software platform. Today via a new app update on the App Store, Sonos 27 has officially arrived. How do you know if your hardware is compatible? Sonos says it's available for "all Sonos S2 products," though feature availability can vary by product. Here's what's available now, per Sonos: * Portable Surrounds: "Two of the same portable Sonos speakers (Move 2 or Sonos Play) can become rear surrounds when paired with a compatible soundbar, then return to their original role when moved, giving existing hardware more utility without a dedicated home theater setup." * New Sonos 27app navigation: "A redesigned app with simpler navigation, swipe gestures and pinned rooms for faster control." * Headphone Linking (Early Access): "Ace Ultra headphones connects to your Sonos system, letting listeners push and pull sound between nearby speakers and their ears without a phone as the middleman." * Sonos 27mcp (Early Access): "Connect AI assistants including ChatGPT and Claude to Sonos giving you more choice, rather than locking listeners into a single assistant." Sonos has also highlighted two more features coming soon: * Sonos 27voice (Later this Fall): "Sonos' own music-focused assistant, reinforcing that no single AI needs to own the home and building around consumer choice." * Sonos Custom Agents (2027): "Lets people create their own agents within the system, each with its own model, persona and voice." Sonos caused quite a stir a few years ago when it launched a major new app redesign. Today's new navigation revamp appears a much smaller change, so hopefully it won't create any controversy.
