Requirements
  • Graduate of a professional Respiratory Therapy program; persons obtaining the Registered Respiratory Therapist credential under the grandfather clause are exempt.
  • Current State of Texas Respiratory Care Practitioner license is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required within 30 days of employment, before patient care is administered independently.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification is required within 90 days of employment.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Neonatal Resuscitation Program certifications are required within 12 months of hire.
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, standing, and walking are required.
  • Occasional reaching, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, and twisting are required.
  • Visual and hearing acuity are required, including color vision to perceive changes in patients and the colors of medicines and solutions.
Responsibilities
  • Administer therapeutic modalities including aerosol therapy, intermittent positive pressure breathing, oxygen therapy, postural drainage and percussion, incentive spirometry, adult and pediatric mechanical ventilation, tracheal suction, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Perform electrocardiograms.
  • Perform electroencephalograms.
  • Perform Holter monitoring, electrocardiogram stress testing, and pulmonary function testing.
  • Accurately document patient care in respiratory therapy progress notes.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, including cleaning, sterilization, and minor repairs, on department equipment.
  • Maintain departmental procedure logs; file electrocardiogram and respiratory therapy records; and copy reports for delivery to patient medical records.
  • Attend required in-service and educational meetings.
  • Adhere to infection control protocols and the organization's legal compliance code of conduct.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and appropriately handle protected health information.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and report safety concerns appropriately.
  • Instruct and educate patients and families.
  • Communicate with physicians and other team members.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement programs.
  • Interact effectively with hospital staff, medical staff, patients, and visitors as part of the interdisciplinary care and service delivery process.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior experience in the cardiopulmonary field is preferred.
  • Current registry by the National Board for Respiratory Care as a Registered Respiratory Therapist is preferred.
