Huron-Clinton Metroparks

View

Huron-Clinton Metroparks is a regional park system that manages 13 parks along the Huron and Clinton rivers in five Michigan counties. It provides places for recreation and learning, including fishing, swimming, boating, hiking, biking, golf, and winter sports, as well as field trips and programs about science, nature, history, and the environment. The parks work by offering trails, facilities, and organized activities that visitors can use for leisure and education. What sets it apart is its shared regional management by the Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority and its commitment to stewarding natural resources across multiple communities while offering extensive educational programs. The goal is to give residents high-quality outdoor recreation while protecting natural resources and promoting science and nature education.

What believers are saying

  • July 8, 2026, Lake St. Clair Metropark won $15 million for marina and accessibility upgrades.
  • April 22, 2026, Metroparks reported 130-plus Climate Action Plan goals, nearly half complete.
  • The Aug. 2026 Flat Rock rock-arch project protects recreation access while restoring river habitat.

What critics are saying

  • Flat Rock Dam's $13 million redesign needs two years, grants, and permitting after Aug. 13, 2026.
  • Lake St. Clair's $15 million upgrade depends on state appropriations and Metroparks matching funds.
  • A property-tax levy in five counties limits resilience; levy fatigue would choke maintenance systemwide.

What makes Huron-Clinton Metroparks unique

  • Huron-Clinton Metroparks runs 14 parks across metro Detroit, not a single site, since 1940.
  • Amy McMillan's 2023 Climate Action Plan ties recreation, restoration, and operations into one operating system.
  • The Metroparks' county levy and user fees fund capital projects without private-equity pressure.
