C3.ai bookings surge 73% and cash flow turns positive, but revenue down 25%

C3.ai reported mixed fiscal first-quarter results, with revenue of $52.4 million falling 25% year-over-year but landing within guidance. Subscription revenue comprised 94% of total revenue at $49.2 million. The quarter showed encouraging signs. Bookings surged 73% sequentially, the company signed 22 agreements, and free cash flow turned positive at $2.1 million versus negative $34.3 million last year. Non-GAAP operating loss narrowed 33% sequentially to $36.2 million. However, challenges remain. GAAP gross margin stood at just 32%, and the company posted a $92.8 million GAAP net loss. Management maintained full-year revenue guidance of $210 million to $240 million, suggesting no quick return to prior growth levels. Hedge fund holdings increased modestly, with 29 funds holding shares in Q2 versus 25 in Q1. Short interest remains high at 42.14% of float.

C3.ai narrows losses, posts Q1 earnings beat amid revenue decline.

C3.ai narrows losses, posts Q1 earnings beat amid revenue decline. The enterprise AI company delivered positive free cash flow for the first time, but a 25% revenue drop year-over-year kept investors cautious after hours. 2 hours ago Sponsored: CoW Swap - Swap Without Paying Gas Swap Now! C3.ai managed to beat Wall Street estimates on both the top and bottom lines for its fiscal first quarter, narrowing its losses and flipping free cash flow positive for the first time in the company's public history. The reward for all that progress? Shares trading below $10 in after-hours action. The enterprise AI software company reported total revenue of $52.4 million for the quarter ending July 31, 2026, edging past analyst consensus expectations that ranged between $52.0 million and $52.3 million. The catch: that figure represents a steep decline from the $70.3 million C3.ai pulled in during the same quarter a year ago, a roughly 25% drop that no amount of earnings-beat confetti can fully obscure. The numbers behind the narrowing losses. On the profitability front, the picture was more encouraging. C3.ai's non-GAAP operating loss came in at $36.2 million, which beat the company's own guidance midpoint by $8.3 million. Non-GAAP net loss per share landed at $0.20, compared to a consensus estimate of $0.25. The standout metric was free cash flow, which turned positive at $2.1 million. For context, C3.ai burned through $34.3 million in the year-ago quarter. Going from negative $34.3 million to positive $2.1 million in twelve months is a $36.4 million swing. The company's recent restructuring slashed headcount by approximately 40%, projecting annualized cost savings of around $135 million. The company's balance sheet remains healthy, with $651.1 million in cash. Bookings surge paints a different picture than revenue. Perhaps the most compelling data point in the entire report: bookings surged 73% quarter-over-quarter. The company closed 22 enterprise agreements during the period, including deals with Ford, Johnson & Johnson, and multiple US federal agencies. Federal bookings specifically grew 138% year-over-year. The disconnect between surging bookings and declining revenue is worth understanding. Enterprise software deals, particularly large ones with government agencies, often take quarters to ramp into recognized revenue. A deal signed in Q1 might not show up meaningfully on the income statement until Q3 or Q4. What the guidance says about the road ahead. C3.ai set Q2 FY2027 revenue expectations between $51 million and $55 million. For the full fiscal year 2027, the company projected total revenue between $210 million and $240 million. Shares of C3.ai closed at $10.52 on September 2, 2026, before sliding lower in after-hours trading to below $10. Disclosure: This article was edited by Editorial Team.
