Future Goals Hockey Scholar is a program created by the National Hockey League (NHL) and the NHL Players’ Association (NHLPA) to bring STEM education to K-12 students through the excitement of hockey. It provides a classroom and virtual curriculum that teachers can use to teach science, technology, engineering, and math concepts by connecting them to hockey themes and activities. The program works by offering ready-to-use lessons, activities, and resources that align with educational standards, which can be implemented in schools or accessed online for home learning. It stands apart from competitors by leveraging the NHL/NHLPA partnership to provide a branded, sport-based learning experience and by forming partnerships with schools and sports organizations to deliver content. The goal is to inspire students to pursue STEM fields by making learning engaging and relevant through hockey.

NHL and FutureSports partner to launch index-based hockey futures contracts with CME Group

FutureSports and the NHL have announced an exclusive partnership to create broad-based performance indexes for hockey. The indexes will use official real-time NHL statistics to measure team and player performance throughout games. CME Group will list monthly and quarterly cash-settled futures contracts based on these benchmarks, pending regulatory review, in time for the 2026-2027 season. The contracts aim to provide hedging vehicles and investment opportunities for institutions, asset managers, trading firms, and individual investors. Potential users include third-party vendors, sponsors, insurers, and sports apparel manufacturers. The indexes follow rules-based methodologies derived from official NHL statistics. Chicago-based FutureSports, launched in 2026 after development beginning in 2022, administers the indexes independently with formal governance procedures.

NHL to produce and distribute local games for four teams amid regional sports network collapse

The NHL will produce and distribute local games for the Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Minnesota Wild, and St Louis Blues when the season begins in late September. The move follows the closure of Main Street Sports, which operated 15 regional channels under the FanDuel Sports Network brand. NHL Productions plans to enhance broadcast quality with additional cameras, improved replay capabilities, and graphics comparable to national network broadcasts. Local announcers will remain unchanged. Three other teams previously on FanDuel Sports Network have secured alternative arrangements. The Anaheim Ducks and Dallas Stars may join the NHL-produced broadcasts after Victory+ streaming service missed rights payments. Major League Baseball began similar centralised production in 2023 and now covers 15 teams. The NBA plans a centralised streaming hub for the 2027-28 season.

Nashville Predators hire Colorado Avalanche GM Chris MacFarland as president of hockey operations

The Nashville Predators have hired Chris MacFarland from the Colorado Avalanche as their president of hockey operations and general manager. MacFarland replaces Barry Trotz, who will move into an advisory role after announcing his retirement from the GM position earlier this season. MacFarland, 56, spent 11 seasons with the Avalanche, including four as general manager. Under his leadership, Colorado posted the NHL's best record this season before being eliminated in the Western Conference Final. He is a finalist for general manager of the year. Nashville has missed the playoffs three of the past four seasons. Joe Sakic will serve as the Avalanche's interim GM for the foreseeable future.

Honeywell becomes NHL's official building automation partner with AI-enabled 'Rinks of the Future

Honeywell International has entered a multi-year global partnership with the National Hockey League, becoming the league's official building automation and energy management partner. The deal aims to modernise arenas, practice facilities and community rinks with AI-enabled, integrated building systems. The partnership extends Honeywell's building automation footprint into sports venues and hockey communities across North America. However, analysts suggest the NHL deal serves primarily as a proof point for Honeywell's pivot towards higher-value, software-heavy automation and energy management, rather than altering the company's investment narrative. Honeywell's near-term focus remains on executing its planned breakup into three public companies, including an aerospace spin-off and divestitures of productivity solutions and warehouse divisions. The company projects $44.8 billion in revenue by 2029, requiring 5.9% annual growth.

NHL partners with Glice to showcase 150 m² synthetic ice rink at SportsInnovation 2026

The NHL invited Glice to showcase a 150 m² synthetic ice rink at the 2026 SportsInnovation conference in Düsseldorf, allowing visitors to test the company's StellarGlide technology firsthand. Glice's ice panels are manufactured in German plastic polymer mills that serve aerospace and robotics industries. Laboratory testing by the Fraunhofer Institute showed the surface achieved friction levels equivalent to real ice at lower skating speeds. Omar Mitchell, NHL vice president of innovation and growth strategy, said the activation demonstrates how material-science companies can shape hockey's future by lowering barriers to play through flexible, location-independent installations. The showcase highlighted how synthetic ice can support experiential activations and broaden access to skating experiences in new settings.
