Its academic mission links reading, writing and mathematics with students' understanding of Inupiat values, history, language and culture. Teachers receive culturally based teaching units, resources and professional development. The district is guided by its Board of Education and was founded in 1973; its central office is in Utqiagvik, Alaska.
