Requirements
  • 15+ years of progressive Environmental, Health & Safety experience, including significant leadership responsibility in robotics, advanced manufacturing, research and development, industrial, or similarly complex technical environments.
  • Strong technical knowledge across occupational safety and health, including machine safety, ergonomics, electrical safety, hazardous energy, material handling, hazardous materials, contractor safety, and incident investigation.
  • Experience supporting complex sites through rapid scale, construction and operational overlap, commissioning, process change, or transition to extended or 24/7 operations.
  • Strong working knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration and California Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements, with the ability to translate regulatory obligations into practical, scalable operating programs.
  • Demonstrated success influencing senior technical and operational leaders where Environmental, Health & Safety does not directly own the work and decisions must be made through partnership.
  • Experience building Environmental, Health & Safety systems, programs, metrics, vendor support, and operating rhythms for an emerging or rapidly scaling organization.
  • Ability to balance operational speed, technical complexity, workforce needs, compliance, and risk.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with executives, engineers, operators, contractors, employees, and external partners, including during high-pressure incidents.
  • Ability to operate independently in ambiguity with technical depth, field orientation, pragmatism, and ownership.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as a senior Environmental, Health & Safety partner across robotics research and development operations, owning site-level safety strategy, priorities, and execution as the footprint scales.
  • Anticipate Environmental, Health & Safety requirements for new operations, equipment, processes, construction phases, staffing ramps, and 24/7 operations, and translate them into practical plans before work begins.
  • Lead proactive risk identification and control across robotics activities, including machine safety, ergonomics, electrical safety, material handling, hazardous materials, contractor safety, and other site-specific risks.
  • Build and maintain site Environmental, Health & Safety programs, risk assessments, procedures, training, inspections, corrective-action systems, emergency preparedness, and compliance processes appropriate to each site's risk profile.
  • Partner with Robotics, Engineering, Operations, Facilities, Workplace, Construction, Security, People, Legal, and vendors to embed safety into facility design, equipment deployment, work planning, and operating decisions.
  • Provide visible field leadership across shifts and operating conditions, establishing mechanisms that support effective Environmental, Health & Safety coverage and escalation for 24/7 operations.
  • Lead incident response and investigation for significant events, including fact-finding, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, verification, trend analysis, and communication of lessons learned.
  • Use incident, near-miss, inspection, and operational data to identify recurring risks and drive preventive actions across sites.
  • Oversee contractor and contingent-worker safety interfaces, including responsibilities, expectations, reporting, and corrective-action ownership across multi-employer worksites.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance and readiness, including applicable California Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements, while developing metrics and reporting that make site risks, actions, and performance visible to leadership.

OpenAI conducts AI research and deployment to build advanced AI models and tools that help people automate tasks, be more creative, and make better decisions. Its products include ChatGPT, a conversational AI that can write, code, tutor, and assist in interactive tasks, and Sora, which can generate videos from text prompts. OpenAI’s models typically run through cloud-based services and subscriptions, with licensing and partnerships for broader use. The company operates a capped-profit model to balance generating revenue with ensuring safety, ethics, and long-term societal benefits. Its approach emphasizes safety, responsible deployment, and collaboration with researchers, governments, and institutions. The goal is to ensure artificial general intelligence, when it arrives, benefits all of humanity and minimizes risks.

OpenAI appoints US AI adviser Paul Christiano to nonprofit board amid growing safety concerns

OpenAI has appointed Paul Christiano to its nonprofit board. Christiano, a technical adviser to the US government and prominent safety researcher, joins at a time of heightened concerns about AI risks. The appointment adds expertise in AI safety to OpenAI's governance structure. Christiano previously worked as a researcher focused on making AI systems more aligned with human values and intentions. His addition to the board comes as policymakers and technology companies face mounting pressure to address potential dangers associated with rapidly advancing artificial intelligence capabilities.

OpenAI's Luna undercuts Chinese AI on price as enterprise revenue jumps 32%

OpenAI's lower-cost Luna model is now cheaper to deploy than Chinese open-source alternatives run through cloud providers, Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar said at Goldman Sachs' conference in San Francisco. An 80% price cut drove a roughly 10-fold increase in Luna usage. The company is targeting chip design, life sciences, and financial services with specialised AI workflows. Enterprise revenue climbed 32% between June and July, outpacing the 20% annualised growth across the business. OpenAI used its own models to develop the Jalapeño chip in under nine months. Developed jointly with Broadcom, the inference processor shows cost savings of roughly 50% compared with typical AI graphics processing units, with initial deployment targeted for late 2026.

OpenAI deepens Samsung ties on next-generation chips and enterprise AI services

OpenAI is deepening cooperation with Samsung Electronics on next-generation chip development, the company's Korea general manager said at a Seoul press conference on Wednesday. Harrison Kim said Samsung is among OpenAI's most advanced partnerships in chip production and research, though he provided no further details. Samsung Electronics could not confirm the information. OpenAI unveiled its first custom AI chip, Jalapeno, in June with Broadcom, with Taiwan's TSMC manufacturing the chips. Samsung and SK Hynix signed letters of intent last year to supply memory chips for OpenAI's Stargate data centre project. Kim said demand for memory chips would grow as more advanced computing requires faster, more complex chips. ChatGPT Enterprise users at South Korean companies surged 28-fold by end-August year-on-year, OpenAI said.

OpenAI launches ChatGPT Images 2.5, slashing latency up to 50%

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Images 2.5, which improves multi-turn editing consistency and reduces image generation latency by up to 50% compared with Images 2.0. The company also introduced two new application programming interface models, GPT-Image-2.5 Flare and GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst. OpenAI said people create more than 3 billion images each week across ChatGPT Images and GPT-Image API models. The system retains safeguards including prompt and image checks, C2PA metadata, and invisible watermarking. C2PA, or Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, is part of a broader provenance standard that uses metadata to show a file's source and integrity. Using both metadata and invisible watermarks can help platforms identify synthetic media.

OpenAI's ChatGPT-6 Astra launch sparks memory-chip stock rally as AI spending continues

OpenAI's launch of its ChatGPT-6 Astra model last week revitalised investor interest in memory-chip stocks. Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Kioxia posted strong gains on Monday as enthusiasm from US semiconductor stocks spilled into Asian markets. Astra is designed to handle more complex tasks, boosting optimism about demand for high-bandwidth memory and graphics processing units. Analysts believe the launch supports continued AI spending, with frontier AI models remaining extremely compute-intensive. Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley estimate that of the expected $1.3-1.5 trillion in AI capital expenditure planned for 2027, more than half will be devoted to memory. The iShares Semiconductor Index jumped 3.5% on Friday, bringing its year-to-date return to 72%.
