Nearly two dozen ER clinicians leave Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes after staffing contract change.

Nearly two dozen ER clinicians leave Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes after staffing contract change. Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden is undergoing a major emergency department staffing change after nearly two dozen clinicians left following a new contract arrangement. Virtua says its Camden emergency department remains fully staffed, but longtime physicians and advanced practice providers are leaving after the hospital switched staffing companies. CAMDEN, N.J. - Nearly two dozen emergency department clinicians are leaving Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital after the health system changed the company responsible for staffing the ER, according to a report by the Inquirer. Virtua ended its contract with Envision Healthcare on Sept. 30 and moved the department to TeamHealth, the same company used across the rest of the Virtua system. The change prompted a wave of departures among physicians and advanced practice providers who had worked in the Camden emergency department, including several longtime leaders. Longtime ER staff depart. Among those leaving is Dr. Al Sacchetti, who spent more than four decades at Lourdes. Former emergency department leaders said most of the existing team did not remain under the new contract arrangement. Former medical director Dr. Monika Smith said 21 physicians and advanced practice providers were offered contracts with TeamHealth and only one accepted a continuing position, while several others agreed to work on an as-needed basis. Some departing clinicians said the proposed contracts included pay cuts of roughly 20% to 30%. Sacchetti, Smith and former clinical operations director Ross Simcoe said they were not offered positions to remain in the Lourdes emergency department, though they were offered roles elsewhere in the Virtua system. "The hospital wanted to make a change, and that's why I'm not there anymore," Sacchetti said. Virtua says ER is fully prepared. Virtua said the decision was made to standardize emergency department staffing across the health system. "With Lourdes being the one outlier, there was a desire for consistency across the entire enterprise to move to the other provider at all seven locations," a Virtua spokesperson said. Virtua also said the Camden emergency department "is fully prepared and able to support the needs of the community through the transition to TeamHealth." There has been no public finding that the transition has caused unsafe care or inadequate ER coverage. Loss of experience raises questions. The more immediate concern is continuity. The departing team includes clinicians with decades of experience inside the hospital and in the surrounding Camden County community. One former physician assistant said, "We had over 100 years experience that they just let go." For an emergency department, that kind of turnover can mean losing staff who know the hospital's specialists, internal procedures and patient population. Virtua has said the transition is intended to create consistency across its network, while departing clinicians have raised concerns about the effect of contract terms and the loss of longtime staff. Camden hospital serves major regional role. Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes is a major South Jersey medical center and serves patients from across the region. That makes the staffing transition more than an internal contracting change. The question now is whether Virtua can replace the departing experience without affecting wait times, staffing levels or continuity of care in one of the region's busiest emergency departments.

Virtua Voorhees Hospital receives advanced certification for hip and knee replacement surgery. Virtua Voorhees Hospital has earned advanced certification from The Joint Commission for total hip and knee replacement surgery. The recognition highlights comprehensive patient care from consultation through recovery across its extensive network in South Jersey. 2 days ago Tuesday, Oct 6 By F. B. Baumgartner Virtua Voorhees Hospital has received advanced certification in total hip and knee replacement surgery, the highest level available, according to an Oct. 6 announcement. Virtua Health earns accreditation for full range of Obesity Medicine services.

Virtua Health earns accreditation for full range of Obesity Medicine services. Published August 21 A prestigious national organization has accredited Virtua Health's Complete Weight Management Program as a Comprehensive Center with Obesity Medicine Qualifications. The designation by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), recognizes the program's comprehensive approach to weight management. Virtua's Complete Weight Management Program is the first in the Philadelphia region to receive this recognition. While the program had previously been accredited for its surgical treatments, the new accreditation endorses Virtua's entire weight management program. The accreditation recognizes the program's ability to seamlessly incorporate weight-loss medications, surgical and non-surgical procedures, and comprehensive support services to provide outstanding care. "Earning accreditation for our entire program is an important milestone," said Gaurav Sharma, MD, director of obesity medicine for Virtua's Complete Weight Management Program. "It recognizes the collaborative work of our team and our commitment to delivering nationally recognized care that helps patients achieve long-lasting weight loss success." The MBSAQIP's accreditation process consists of a comprehensive evaluation to ensure high levels of care. To earn accreditation, programs must document patient care outcomes, complete online training modules, and participate in routine MBSAQIP quality assessments. The MBSAQIP seeks to standardize benchmarks and improve quality among programs. "We offer our patients a range of choices so they can receive the treatment that's right for them," said Samuel Wasser, MD, director of bariatric surgery with the Complete Weight Management Program at Virtua Health. The program provides a wide range of resources and services to ensure patients are well-supported throughout their weight-management journey. It offers: * Medical weight-loss options, featuring multiple FDA-approved medications * Bariatric weight-loss surgery, including minimally invasive, robotic-assisted technology whenever possible * Non-surgical, endoscopic weight-loss procedures * Comprehensive support services, such as nutrition counseling, behavior counseling, fitness counseling, monthly support groups, and access to a personal weight-management navigation team, ensuring patients have the highest degree of support to maintain their weight loss "It's the full spectrum, which is what anyone needs to lose weight successfully," explained Wasser. Additionally, this accreditation recognizes the Complete Weight Management Program's dedication to progressing alongside developing technologies. This commitment to innovation was on display last November when Virtua Health became the first in the region to offer a minimally invasive weight-loss procedure utilizing magnet technology. As only the 16th health system in the country to offer this procedure at the time, the program demonstrated its commitment to expanding access to minimally invasive treatments in addition to advancing innovations that enhance patient outcomes. With locations in Haddon Heights, Marlton, Moorestown, and Sewell, the Complete Weight Management Program is committed to providing high-quality, leading, accessible care to the South Jersey community. Virtua Health introduces robotic Whipple surgery for pancreatic cancer in regional first.

Virtua Health introduces robotic Whipple surgery for pancreatic cancer in regional first. Virtua Health became the first organization in New Jersey and the Greater Philadelphia region to offer a robotic-assisted version of the Whipple procedure, a complex surgery used to treat cancers of the pancreas and nearby structures, according to an Aug. 20 announcement. The minimally invasive robotic Whipple procedure allows for smaller incisions, faster recovery, and enhanced precision compared to traditional surgery. Ely Sebastian, MD, Virtua pancreatic and hepatobiliary surgeon and the first in the region to provide this procedure, said, "Robotic Whipple is a very important advancement for people who need this complicated surgery." Sebastian added that robotics bring greater precision which can result in better outcomes and fewer complications. The first patient to undergo this operation at Virtua was Dawn, a 65-year-old Medford resident diagnosed with a walnut-size pancreatic tumor during an emergency-room visit. After additional tests at Virtua Its Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden cleared her for surgery, Dr. Sebastian recommended the robotic-assisted approach due to its potential for faster healing and fewer complications than traditional open procedures. Dawn was released six days after her operation and reported no pain or need for medication once home. She will continue chemotherapy until December before undergoing breast-cancer surgery at Virtua. The Whipple procedure - also known as pancreaticoduodenectomy - involves removal and reconstruction of parts of several organs including the pancreas, small intestine, gallbladder, bile duct, and sometimes part of the stomach. Not all patients are candidates; it is mainly used for tumors located in specific areas such as the head of the pancreas or bile duct cancers. In its robotic form using several small incisions rather than one large opening, recovery times are typically shorter with reduced blood loss and scarring. Dr. Sebastian uses the da Vinci 5 platform across Virtua Health's network facilities for these operations. He said, "At Virtua, we're providing more specialized surgeries than most other area health systems in our region," adding that offering world-class care close to home remains a top priority. Virtua Health operates five hospitals along with over 400 locations across South Jersey and beyond through various health programs aimed at delivering comprehensive services supporting wellness according to its official website. The organization maintains academic ties with Rowan University as well as partnerships with Penn Medicine for cancer care and neuroscience programs. Its network includes more than 3,000 affiliated doctors.
