General Description

The Vice President, Capital Campaigns & Other Campaigns leads the strategy, planning, and execution of Blue Star Families' capital campaign and other major, time-bound fundraising initiatives. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, this role partners closely with the President, CEO, and Board leadership to build the case for support, structure campaign phases, and drive campaigns from feasibility through public phase and close-out.

This is a senior leadership role responsible for building the strategy, timelines, and stakeholder engagement plans a large-scale campaign requires, while also identifying and managing other significant campaigns—such as matching-gift challenges, emergency or rapid-response appeals, and signature anniversary or naming campaigns—as organizational priorities dictate.

This role requires the ability to travel overnight several times per year to attend team offsites, leadership sessions, donor meetings, and company-wide events. Attendance and participation in these gatherings is a non-negotiable component of the position.

Key Job Functions

Campaign Strategy & Planning

Design and lead the strategic framework for the capital campaign and other major campaigns, including case-for-support development, campaign readiness assessment, and feasibility study coordination.
Build gift-range charts, campaign timelines, and phase plans (quiet phase, leadership phase, public phase) aligned with organizational priorities and revenue goals.
Partner with the Chief Development Officer to translate campaign strategy into clear, resourced execution plans: a game plan with defined goals, owners, and milestones.

Campaign Execution & Pipeline Management

Manage moves-management activity for campaign prospects in partnership with Major Gifts and Development leadership, ensuring disciplined portfolio assignment and solicitation readiness.
Track pledges, gift agreements, and campaign progress against goals; maintain accurate, up-to-date campaign reporting and dashboards that serve as a real-time scoreboard for leadership and volunteers.
Coordinate campaign counsel, consultants, and volunteer leadership (e.g., campaign steering committees, honorary chairs) as needed.
Personally cultivate and close select leadership-level campaign gifts, modeling preparation, persistence, and competitive drive.

Other Campaigns & Special Initiatives

Identify, scope, and lead other significant fundraising campaigns outside the core capital campaign, such as matching-gift challenges, emergency/rapid-response appeals, and signature anniversary or naming campaigns.
Develop campaign-specific messaging, timelines, and stewardship plans in coordination with Marketing and Development colleagues.
Evaluate campaign results and apply lessons learned to strengthen future campaign strategy, sharing candid post-campaign debriefs with the team.

Stakeholder Leadership Engagement

Cultivate and staff campaign leadership, including campaign committees and honorary co-chairs, to expand reach and credibility.
Prepare briefing materials, talking points, and solicitation strategies for the President, CEO, Chief Development Officer, and Board members engaging campaign prospects.
Represent Blue Star Families in campaign-related donor meetings, briefings, and events as needed.

Cross-Functional Coordination

Partner with Major Gifts, Direct Marketing, Events, Marketing & Communications, Finance, and Program teams to ensure campaigns are integrated, properly resourced, and aligned with organizational capacity.
Ensure campaign gift accounting, pledge tracking, and restricted-fund coordination align with Finance and Development Operations standards.

Reporting & Governance

Provide regular campaign progress reports to the Chief Development Officer, President, CEO, and Board Development Committee.
Ensure campaign practices align with gift acceptance policies, naming and recognition guidelines, and ethical fundraising standards (e.g., AFP, CASE).
Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Experience, Skills, Background

8+ years of progressive nonprofit development experience, including direct experience with capital or comprehensive campaigns.
Demonstrated experience leading or playing a senior role in a capital campaign of $10M+, from feasibility through close-out.
A proven track record of meeting or exceeding ambitious campaign goals, with specific, measurable wins you can speak to.
An athlete's mindset: high energy, competitive drive, resilience after setbacks, and a hunger to keep improving.
Comfort operating with a high degree of autonomy and accountability, and the ability to give and receive candid feedback, including with senior executives and Board members.
Strong understanding of campaign mechanics: gift-range charts, pipeline staging, pledge accounting, and campaign reporting.
Experience developing case-for-support materials and campaign collateral in partnership with Marketing/Communications.
Experience engaging and staffing volunteer leadership and campaign committees.
Demonstrated success working with CRM systems (preferably Salesforce) and campaign tracking tools.
Strong project management, organizational, and analytical skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex campaign strategy into clear materials for executives and Board members.
Ability to travel overnight several times per year for donor meetings and organizational gatherings.
May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays as necessary to carry out key job functions.

Desired Experience, Skills & Background

Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, business administration, or a related field; advanced degree a plus.
CFRE, ACFRE, or equivalent professional credential.
Experience with matching-gift, challenge, or rapid-response fundraising campaigns.
Familiarity with the military and Veteran-connected community.
Experience partnering with campaign counsel or outside consultants.
Experience in a high-growth, performance-driven culture (nonprofit or private sector).

Blue Star Families expands support for military-connected families with new Carolina East Chapter. New chapter will connect military and veteran families with local resources, support, and opportunities to build community throughout the Jacksonville region. JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - October 8, 2026 Blue Star Families, the nation's largest military and veteran family support organization, continues its chapter expansion strategy with the launch of its newest location in eastern North Carolina on October 9. The new Carolina East Chapter will give military and veteran families in the Jacksonville, Goldsboro, and Havelock areas a new local resource for connection, support, and community. The chapter will provide opportunities for military-connected families to discover local resources, participate in family programs, and become more connected to the communities they call home. The Carolina East Chapter builds on Blue Star Families' presence in North Carolina, where its Fayetteville Chapter serves military-connected families in the Sandhills Region. The addition of a second chapter recognizes the size and geographic reach of the state's military community and allows Blue Star Families to provide more localized support and programming, including career development workshops for military spouses and peer support circles for caregivers, to families in eastern North Carolina. To support the chapter's opening in North Carolina, Craig Newmark, founder of Craig's List, and craig newmark philanthropies have committed to matching donations made at dollar-for-dollar, up to $500,000. "Military-connected families have unique needs that are best addressed close to home," said Blue Star Families CEO Kathy Roth-Douquet. "Expanding into eastern North Carolina, an area the Marine Corps asked for Blue Star Families support, allows us to reach more families with the relationships and resources that can make a difference during military life. FCPS and partners host resource fair for military families at West Springfield High School. Fairfax County Public Schools partnered with Blue Star Families to host the Mission Ready: Back to School Resource Fair at West Springfield High School on Aug. 1, providing military families with supplies, information, and community connections as they prepare for the new school year. Jack, an 11th grader at Robinson Secondary School who has lived in several states due to his family's military background, said, "You learn to adapt in different environments. You learn to find different teachers you like and just people you want to be around." His father, Matt Giffen, a nearly 20-year Army veteran, said moving frequently offers unique opportunities: "The opportunity of moving all the time is they get to see a bunch of stuff that most people don't: trying new foods, seeing new cultures." The event marked its third year and was open to active duty, National Guard, Reserve, and veteran families. At the fair, families collected information from FCPS offices and community partners while children picked up supplies and participated in games. Katie Server, FCPS family partnerships specialist, said the goal extends beyond distributing school supplies. "We're really committed to working on building relationships for our military families," Server said. "Bringing everybody together really lets them have that village around them that they need to feel welcome, feel like they belong, and to help with anything they may need." Deborah Judy, Navy spouse and FCPS parent who recently relocated from England with her family for their first experience in Fairfax County schools, said it was helpful having support specifically for military-connected students: "It was nice to have a military liaison counselor... It was a positive experience. And it was a good transition." Supporting students so they feel safe and included is Goal 2 of the 2023-30 FCPS Strategic Plan. The initiative also aligns with efforts for FCPS schools becoming a Purple Star Division equipped for serving military-connected students. Jessica Giffen expressed appreciation for returning to familiar surroundings: "My oldest had been there already... They asked to come back because they enjoyed their experience so much last time we were here." She added about school events tailored toward military families: "This program has welcomed so many families in helping out with school supplies... It's been nothing but welcoming, helpfulness, and kindness from all the employees."
