Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Safety Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related engineering field is required.
  • At least 8 years of experience in safety engineering or a related engineering role is required, preferably in warehousing, fulfillment, distribution, or manufacturing environments.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, computer-aided design files, design packages, and technical specifications for complex mechanical and material-handling systems.
  • Working knowledge of material-handling equipment systems, conveyor systems, racking, and general warehousing infrastructure, including the ability to evaluate and communicate safety risks.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety and engineering standards, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards, National Fire Protection Association standards, American National Standards Institute standards, International Organization for Standardization 12100, ANSI B11, National Electrical Code, Underwriters Laboratories, CE, and Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory requirements.
  • Experience participating in Management of Change processes as a technical reviewer or subject-matter expert, including evaluating engineering and operational changes for safety impact and recommending mitigations.
  • Experience conducting risk assessments and safety design reviews using the hierarchy of controls to identify and mitigate hazards during design and engineering.
  • Proficiency with computer-aided design software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar software for engineering drawing review and layout evaluation.
  • Ability to build working relationships with engineers, architects, contractors, and operations leadership and communicate across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and priorities across a distributed network.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50%.
Responsibilities
  • Act as the embedded safety engineering subject-matter expert for new buildings, capital equipment deployments, process changes, pilots, and equipment modifications across the fulfillment network.
  • Coordinate with Launch, Design, Construction, Engineering, Technology, Maintenance and Reliability, Operations, and Environmental Health and Safety teams from concept through commissioning.
  • Partner technically with Environmental Health and Safety teams when adapting to new procedures and review equipment modifications, process changes, and facility alterations for design-related hazards.
  • Review engineering drawings, computer-aided design files, design packages, specifications, and vendor submittals for material-handling equipment, conveyors, automation, racking, and related warehouse systems; identify hazards and recommend engineering controls.
  • Conduct safety design reviews and risk assessments for new and modified equipment using ISO 12100, ANSI B11, and hierarchy-of-controls principles; maintain hazard logs and risk registers through mitigation and closure.
  • Interpret and apply applicable laws and industry consensus standards, and define and track equipment certification requirements with vendors and Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories.
  • Establish equipment safety requirements and acceptance criteria for Factory Acceptance Testing and Site Acceptance Testing.
  • Participate in testing to verify that safeguarding, interlocks, emergency-stop systems, access controls, and other engineering controls are documented and function as designed before operational use.
  • Ensure equipment safety requirements are incorporated into facility layouts, construction documents, equipment specifications, commissioning plans, Factory Acceptance Testing and Site Acceptance Testing protocols, and turnover documentation.
  • Develop, own, and maintain equipment safety policies, design standards, technical requirements, review processes, and supporting documentation across the network.
  • Develop technical training when necessary to support implementation.
  • Provide technical support for equipment safety assessments, equipment-related incident investigations, and complex issues raised by field Environmental Health and Safety, Engineering, Maintenance and Reliability, or Operations teams.
Desired Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer licensure is strongly preferred; Professional Engineer-eligible candidates actively pursuing licensure will be considered.
  • Structural background or experience evaluating elevated structures, mezzanines, conveyor support systems, and racking installations in warehouse or industrial environments.
  • Certified Safety Professional or Associate Safety Professional certification.
  • Experience with automated material-handling systems, robotics, or autonomous mobile robot and automated guided vehicle technology in fulfillment or distribution environments.
  • Experience implementing ISO 45001, ISO 12100, or ISO 13849 and working with third-party certification programs.
  • Experience in e-commerce fulfillment, distribution center, or high-volume warehousing environments.
  • Familiarity with ergonomics principles and their application to material-handling equipment, warehousing equipment, and process design.
  • Experience with Environmental Health and Safety management software or reporting tools.
  • Ability to adapt to fast-paced environments with changing circumstances, direction, and strategy.

UPS marks anniversary by looking at AI and the human touch. UPS marks nearly 12 decades in business this week. The company is celebrating its history, and also looking at how employees today fit into the corporation's growing use of artificial intelligence. The Sandy Springs-based company held its fifth annual UPS Impact Summit at its corporate headquarters on Wednesday. Artificial intelligence and the role of human ingenuity was the theme. "We're all on the same page with 'Let's put the kindness back in human kind,'" said Kate Gutmann, executive vice president and president of International, Healthcare and Supply Chain Solutions. UPS celebrates its 119th birthday on Aug. 28. Eighteen-year-old Jim Casey took out a $100 loan to launch the business in 1907 with a friend in the basement of a Seattle, Washington bar. Today, UPS has more than 400,000 employees and operates in more than 200 countries and territories, according to the company. UPS CEO Carol Tomé opened the summit, which included company executives and outside speakers discussing technology, trust, workplace culture and social impact. Jenna Lauer, chief commercial officer at The Harris Poll, said trust is essential to building customer loyalty, citing pet supply retailer Chewy, which ranked No. 1 in the 2026 Axios Harris Poll 100. "Literally, all signs point to the fact that they write you handwritten notes," Lauer said. She also said that as a personal touch, Starbucks has returned to writing on cups. "Some of this is back to the basics," she said. During a time when speed seems more valued, simply saying 'thank you' can take a company further with its customers, Lauer added. Author Angus Fletcher, whose latest book is "Primal Intelligence: You Are Smarter Than You Know," was the keynote speaker. In contrast to AI, Fletcher said people bring other abilities to problem-solving including imagining new possibilities and making judgments in uncertain situations. Fletcher said people tend to fall back on approaches that have worked before, but creative breakthroughs come from seeing possibilities outside familiar patterns. He used Vincent van Gogh as an example, saying artists had relied heavily on red, blue and green colors in paintings before van Gogh's use of yellow pushed painting in a new direction with the emergence of modern art. Bala Subramanian, UPS executive vice president & chief digital and technology officer, said 70 percent of UPS employees use AI. Even so, the human connection can ultimately make the difference, added Gutmann. "Weighing in. Being curious. Understanding the possibilities, not the probabilities," Gutmann said. "That's what we do. That's redefining what's possible."

Chewy's annual sales growth of 7.1% over three years lagged peers, with its 29.6% gross margin reflecting weak unit economics. Wall Street forecasts tepid 6.8% growth ahead. C.H. Robinson faces end-market headwinds, with sales declining 2.3% annually over five years. Its 7.5% gross margin trails competitors, whilst diminishing returns on capital suggest profit pools are drying up. Analysts rarely issue sell ratings, often seeking other business from covered companies.
