About the company

OSEA Malibu makes seaweed-infused skincare for women and men. It sells cleansers, serums, oils, and moisturizers through direct-to-consumer channels (its Shopify site with a subscription program) and retail partners like Ulta Beauty, Nordstrom, Bluemercury, and Credo. How it works: its products use seaweed-derived ingredients (notably Undaria Algae Body Oil) and other clean, vegan, cruelty-free ingredients. The brand started in a family garage and grew by moving to DTC under Melissa Palmer and expanding through partnerships; it also has a climate-conscious stance (Ocean Positive) and a climate-neutral certification. The model balances about half of revenue from DTC subscriptions and product sales, with the other half from wholesale to retailers. Its goal is to provide transparent, clean, ocean-based skincare that works for people aged 20–60, expanding to male consumers, while maintaining family-owned values and sustainable practices.

What believers are saying

  • General Atlantic announced expansion funding on 2025-09-16, targeting product innovation and international growth.
  • OSEA’s September 2026 Nordstrom and Ulta events celebrate its 30th anniversary and drive sell-through.
  • Undaria Algae Body Oil ranked first among 2026 luxury body oils, sustaining premium demand.

What critics are saying

  • The 2024 collagen class action can snowball into credibility collapse by 2027.
  • General Atlantic’s board control and growth mandate pressure margins if international launches stall.
  • Dupes and discounting at Ulta and Nordstrom compress pricing on Undaria body care.

What makes OSEA unique

  • Melissa and Jenefer Palmer still run OSEA after General Atlantic’s 2025 minority investment.
  • OSEA’s seaweed-first positioning and Undaria Algae Body Oil remain its signature moat.
  • Ulta, Nordstrom, and Nordstrom-exclusive sets keep OSEA premium, visible, and nationally distributed.

OSEA x Sweet Laurel: when skincare meets cake.

OSEA x Sweet Laurel: when skincare meets cake. Oct. 15, 2026 at 1:07 pm In celebration of 30 years of clean, clinically tested skincare from the sea, OSEA is teaming up with beloved Los Angeles bakery Sweet Laurel for a limited-edition cake collaboration inspired by the brand's new Undaria Algae(TM) Body Butter in Bergamot & Vanilla Bean. Available exclusively online, Sweet Laurel has created the OSEA Vanilla Bean & Bergamot Cake ($80), a limited-edition cake available through October 31, inspired by OSEA's new body butter scent which is the first-ever scent variation of the cult-favorite body moisturizer. The collaboration brings the sensorial notes of the new body butter to life through Sweet Laurel's signature approach to elevated, thoughtfully made desserts, translating the scent into an unexpected edible experience. Inspired by the same warm, indulgent notes as OSEA's limited-edition Bergamot & Vanilla Bean Body Butter, the cake brings its velvety richness to the table. The brands have collaborated on a custom cake, bringing OSEA's sensorial approach to body care beyond the bathroom shelf. To celebrate, OSEA is hand-delivering the freshly made cakes alongside its Undaria Algae(TM) Body Butter to a curated group of editors, creators, and brand friends, creating an immersive experience that connects skincare, scent, and food. The collaboration taps into the growing intersection of beauty and food, as brands look beyond traditional product mailers to create memorable, multisensory experiences. By translating a body care product's fragrance into an edible experience, OSEA and Sweet Laurel are bringing a fresh perspective to cross-category partnerships and showing how brands can engage consumers through unexpected, shareable moments.
