Sweetgreen opens six restaurants in 60 days but slows expansion as Q2 sales fall 6.2%

Sweetgreen opened six restaurants in about 60 days, in Jacksonville, Nashville, Salt Lake City, McLean, Mall of America, and Princeton. The openings include its first East Coast sweetlane drive-thru and a smaller grab-and-go site. The company is not speeding up, however. Chief development officer Ryan Slemons said, "We want to walk now so we can sprint later," stressing returns on investment and tighter control of construction costs and formats. Second-quarter same-store sales fell 6.2%, while revenue rose about 4% to $192.7 million. Sweetgreen ended the quarter with 287 restaurants and now expects full-year comparable sales to fall 7% to 8%. Chief executive officer Jonathan Neman said development in 2027 would be conservative, possibly matching or falling below this year's pace.

Sweetgreen hires former Starbucks leaders as chief people officer. Photo: Sweetgreen October 8, 2026 Sweetgreen has named Lauren Crowley as chief people officer as the fast-casual chain looks to strengthen its people organization for its next stage of growth. She brings more than 20 years of experience leading human resources organizations through growth and transformation at consumer and technology companies, including Expedia Group, Starbucks, Whole Foods Market and Dell. Most recently, Crowley served as senior vice president of human resources at OC Sports & Entertainment, where she led the company's people function. During seven years at Expedia Group, Crowley led enterprise-wide talent programs supporting 16,500 employees across 56 countries. At Starbucks, she led U.S. retail HR operations supporting more than 200,000 employees across more than 15,000 stores. "What drew me to Sweetgreen is its unique combination of purpose, ambition and a genuine commitment to its people," Crowley said in the release. "I look forward to partnering with the leadership team and our restaurant teams to build on the strong foundation already in place and create an environment where our people can grow their careers and help shape what's next for the company." Neman said Crowley's experience managing people organizations at scale will be important as Sweetgreen continues to evolve. "Lauren brings the exact blend of strategic vision, operational rigor and people-first leadership that Sweetgreen needs at this stage of our journey," Neman said in the release. "She has a deep understanding of how to build strong cultures and people organizations at scale." Crowley succeeds Adrienne Gemperle, who has served as Sweetgreen's chief people officer through a period of significant growth and change. Gemperle will transition out of the role and work with Crowley through the end of the year to support the leadership change. "Adrienne has been an extraordinary leader, partner and champion for our people, and I'm deeply grateful for everything she has given to Sweetgreen," Neman said. "She helped build and scale our people organization, and her impact can be seen across our culture, our leadership team and our restaurants." Sweetgreen operates more than 285 restaurants across the U.S. The company opened its first 560-square-foot location in 2007 and has continued to expand its footprint while investing in technology, supply chain and restaurant operations.

Molly Baz joins sweetgreen as first Chef in Residence.

Molly Baz joins sweetgreen as first Chef in Residence. Sep 29 2026 Today, sweetgreen announced cookbook author, recipe developer and food personality Molly Baz as its first-ever Chef in Residence. Three new lunch orders, plenty of dill pickles and several executive decisions later, Baz has officially declared that LUNCH MEANS BUSINESS with her new LTO menu. Available at all sweetgreen restaurants from September 29 through November 9, the limited-edition menu features three new craveable orders: Molly's Big Dill Caesar Wrap, Molly's Pickle Caesar Sal and Molly's Double Chick Scoop. "Molly approaches food with curiosity, conviction and a very clear point of view on what makes something delicious. Together, we created a menu that feels distinctly Molly and distinctly sweetgreen, thoughtfully made and anything but basic," said Zipporah Allen, Chief Commercial Officer at sweetgreen. "Molly is the first of many voices we'll welcome through our new Chef Residency. Her bold approach to flavor made her a natural choice to kick it off, and these three new delicious lunch orders show what's possible when we create together." The menu includes: * Molly's Big Dill Caesar Wrap: Molly's creamy chicken salad with crisp romaine, fresh dill, Parmesan, pickled red onion, spicy broccoli, garlic breadcrumbs, lemon, Ayoh Dill Pickle Mayo, a pickle spear and Caesar dressing - all wrapped in sweetgreen's signature olive oil tortilla. * Molly's Pickle Caesar Sal: Molly's pickle-forward take on a Caesar, featuring her special chicken salad made with Ayoh, fresh dill, Parmesan, pickled red onion, spicy broccoli, garlic breadcrumbs, lemon, Caesar dressing and a pickle spear. * Molly's Double Chick Scoop: A double scoop of Molly's creamy, dill-forward chicken salad made with Ayoh, with a crisp pickle spear on the side. "sweetgreen and I go wayyyy back, and I've been a fan for years, so returning as its first ever Chef in Residence is a very full-circle moment for me," said Baz. "I'm on a mission to put an end to boring sandwiches and sad lunches - and that includes wraps! My constant experimentation in the kitchen is how Ayoh was born, and it's how I landed on this menu of spins on a classic, and highly beloved American food group: the caesar salad. I developed 3 different menu items, all of which feature a big scoop of dilly chicken salad loaded with Dill Pickle Ayoh for maximum flavor. Throw that on my bright, crisp, lemony caesar salad, or pack it into a fresh crunchy cae sal wrap stuffed with a pickle spear and tell me that lunch didn't just get exponentially more fun and delicious. As a self-proclaimed caesar salad afficionado/expert, I take my caesars extremely seriously, and this one has a LOT to say on the matter." The collaboration comes to life through Lunch Means Business, a campaign that casts Baz as the ultimate lunchtime boss. Inspired by the larger-than-life executive world of the '90s, the creative follows Baz through a workday where every meeting is a tasting, every memo is a menu note and every business decision comes down to one thing: making undeniably delicious food. Because when it comes to taste, Molly is the boss. The campaign will appear across sweetgreen's social and digital channels, restaurants and out-of-home placements in New York and California. Molly's limited-edition menu is available from September 29 through November 9 at all sweetgreen restaurants. Customers can order in restaurant, through the sweetgreen app or at sweetgreen.com.
