Requirements

  • A university degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or Physics from an accredited program, plus four years of directly related work experience.
  • Detailed knowledge of the technical vocabulary common to the appropriate discipline.
  • Working knowledge of conformity standards used in the area of expertise.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply project-handling concepts used in the area of expertise.
  • Ability to communicate in English, read English, write reports, and present information.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office and basic computer skills.
  • Flexibility, analytical ability, attention to detail, and self-motivation.

Responsibilities

  • Independently determine project scope, develop a preliminary plan of investigation, and determine project specifications such as cost, time, and sample requirements by analyzing client input, available supplemental data, and product construction.
  • Travel frequently, as projects may require, to conduct or witness tests at client sites.
  • Initiate communication with clients to promote and explain the benefits of new and existing services.
  • Follow up on contacts from clients.
  • Communicate with clients about technical issues, explain UL procedures and requirements, convey project cost, and negotiate completion dates and sample requirements.
  • Address client concerns and resolve client issues.
  • Provide technical assistance to clients regarding product inspection and follow-up services.
  • Establish appropriate test programs by reviewing files and manufacturer information, examining samples, and applying UL requirements.
  • Notify clients about product noncompliance with UL requirements and changes in project scope or specifications.
  • Coordinate laboratory activities by preparing data sheets and instructions for technicians, scheduling and reviewing work of Laboratory Technicians and support staff, and establishing completion dates.
  • Coordinate administrative aspects of project management.
  • Serve as Project Handler of record and, when assigned, sign as Reviewer of record.
  • Communicate project status and results to clients through frequent contact and by preparing reports.
  • Prepare Follow-Up Service Procedures and information pages.
  • Integrate continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
  • Resolve engineering issues associated with Variation Notices by analyzing and reporting on the acceptability of variations.
  • Propose development of new or revised UL requirements.
  • Develop special test methods and test equipment.
  • Coordinate or perform File Reviews.
  • Represent UL at industry-related functions such as seminars and trade shows, as needed.
  • Provide direction as a Primary Designated Engineer or Designated Engineer for specific product categories, as needed.
  • Direct and review work of assigned staff, as needed.
  • Train office, field, or laboratory staff and entry-level engineers, as needed.
  • Provide technical assistance to laboratory or field staff.
  • Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and follow physical and digital security practices.
  • Perform other duties as directed.
  • Evaluate and certify FA equipment and industrial components.
  • Respond to customer inquiries about product safety standards and regulations.
  • Manage projects from technical meetings through certification.
  • Coordinate with other departments to confirm deadlines through project management.
  • Communicate primarily with domestic and international engineers and laboratories.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience designing AC/DC power supplies or understanding electrical circuits.
  • Experience designing data center-related equipment.
  • English reading and report-writing ability, with a TOEIC score of approximately 600 as a guideline.
  • Communication skills, including communication in English, and self-motivation.
