Leaked Mass Effect: Universe trailer emerges after EA closes BioWare and cancels the game

A leaked trailer for a new Mass Effect game has surfaced after EA closed BioWare, the studio behind the series. Authors Catherynne M. Valente and Derek Kunsken said they had worked on the game for years. In a memo to staff, EA executives Cam Weber and David Tinson said only "a small team at BioWare" was working on early development. The decision "not to move forward with this development" led to the closure. A Mass Effect streaming series announced in 2024 is still in development, IGN reported, citing sources inside Prime Video. An online petition urging EA to continue the series or license it to another studio has nearly 17,500 signatures.

BioWare shuts down after more than 30 years, next Mass Effect canceled.

BioWare shuts down after more than 30 years, next Mass Effect canceled. In a nutshell * EA has confirmed the closure of BioWare after more than three decades in the games industry. * Development of the next Mass Effect RPG has been canceled while still in its early stages. * The move comes amid broader restructuring efforts at EA, which reportedly include around 400 job cuts across the company. Electronic Arts has officially announced the closure of BioWare, bringing an end to one of gaming's most influential RPG studios after more than 30 years in operation. Alongside the shutdown, the publisher has also canceled development of the next Mass Effect RPG, which was reportedly still in its early stages. The announcement marks a heartbreaking moment for longtime fans, as BioWare was responsible for beloved franchises such as Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The studio also built its reputation on genre-defining RPGs like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, helping shape modern role-playing games as One More Game know them today. EA restructuring leads to BioWare closure. According to reports, the closure is part of a broader restructuring initiative at EA that includes approximately 400 job cuts across the company. Around 50 BioWare employees are said to be affected, while EA is also shuttering the studio's Edmonton office in Canada. In a farewell statement shared on social media, BioWare reflected on its decades-long journey and thanked both its developers and players for supporting its games throughout the years. The studio also stated that its immediate focus is helping affected employees during the transition period. Next Mass Effect will no longer continue. Perhaps the most shocking aspect of the announcement is the cancellation of the next Mass Effect game. The project was first teased in 2020 and was expected to continue the beloved sci-fi RPG series. While BioWare had never revealed an official title or launch window, the studio had previously indicated that development was ongoing. Following the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard in 2024, BioWare had shifted much of its focus toward the new Mass Effect project. As recently as November 2025, Mass Effect executive producer Mike Gamble reportedly reaffirmed EA and BioWare's commitment to the franchise. However, the latest developments have brought those plans to an abrupt halt before the game could progress beyond its early development phase. Chris garcia. Editor in Chief Father. Gamer. EA lays off 400 staff and closes BioWare after 31 years, memo leak reveals

Electronic Arts is laying off about 400 employees, or 3% of its global workforce, and closing video game studio BioWare, according to a leaked employee memo reported Wednesday. The cuts come amid a business restructure. BioWare's closure ends a 31-year run in which it developed franchises including "Mass Effect" and "Dragon Age." "Over the past several months, we've taken a hard look at our business, how we operate, and what it will take to lead in this next era of interactive entertainment," wrote Cam Weber, president and chief studios officer, and David Tinson, president and chief operating officer. They added that the company had "challenged assumptions, confronted hard realities" and made deliberate choices "to drive sustained growth.

EA shuts down BioWare after three decades, ending next Mass Effect project

Electronic Arts (EA) has shut down BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Neverwinter Nights, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. BioWare announced the closure on social media Wednesday, saying early development on the next Mass Effect project is also ending. The announcement followed a Bloomberg report of 400 job cuts across EA, including 50 at BioWare. EA executives told staff the company is aligning "talent and investments where we see the greatest opportunities for players and long-term growth," according to Bloomberg. BioWare was founded in Edmonton, Alberta, in 1995 and joined EA in 2007. EA went private last year in a $55 billion deal led by Silver Lake, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, and Jared Kushner's Affinity Partners.

EA shuts down BioWare after 30 years and cancels Mass Effect 5

Electronic Arts (EA) will shut down BioWare, the studio behind Baldur's Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect. Early development on the next Mass Effect game will also end. In a statement, BioWare said its focus is on supporting its team through the transition. The studio was founded in 1995. BioWare had a string of costly misses with Mass Effect: Andromeda, Anthem, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which fell short of fan expectations, financial expectations, or both. Longtime Mass Effect figures Casey Hudson, Mark Darrah, and Mac Walters left the company years ago.
