H-1B visa uncertainty forces skilled workers to put life plans on hold

Madhur Mehta has worked at Amazon for five years on an H-1B visa, but uncertainty about his immigration status prevents him from planning ahead. He and his fiancée, also from India, postponed buying a house because her work authorisation hinges on one final lottery attempt. Business Insider spoke to over 20 H-1B holders and applicants about their sacrifices navigating the visa system. Many struggle with job changes requiring new petitions, tight deadlines after redundancies, and family separation. The Trump administration's proposed $100,000 fee on certain H-1B petitions has added further complications. Shreya Mishra Reddy left the US for Toronto after the fee announcement closed off her overseas application path. Soumi Chanda estimates her forced departure cost $18,000. Despite challenges, demand remains strong. The US issues 85,000 new H-1B visas annually but received 344,000 applications for fiscal year 2026.

Business Insider names Christian Baesler permanent CEO to reinvent outlet for post-social media era

Axel Springer has appointed Christian Baesler as permanent CEO of Business Insider, the outlet confirmed. Baesler, who joined as interim chief in June, plans to reinvent the nearly 20-year-old publication for a post-search and social media era. The company is expanding beyond web traffic, with audiences across newsletters, events, YouTube (over 10 million subscribers), and recently launched streaming platforms. Business Insider will focus on direct sales and subscriptions through four verticals: Markets Insider, AI Insider, Small Business Insider, and CMO Insider.
