About the company

Tesla makes electric cars and batteries that store power for homes and utilities, and it develops self-driving software and humanoid robots. In 2023, its Model Y became the first electric vehicle to rank as the world's best-selling car. Buyers order the Model 3 sedan, Model Y SUV, or Cybertruck pickup directly from Tesla instead of through dealers, and they charge on its Supercharger fast-charging network. It also sells Megapack and Powerwall batteries, runs a robotaxi service, and charges drivers a monthly fee for self-driving software that still needs their supervision. Tesla was founded in 2003, with Elon Musk as its lead early investor and a recognized co-founder, and it is based in Austin, Texas.

  • Software adds income beyond cars: paid users of its supervised self-driving feature rose 56% to 1.48 million by June 2026.
  • Hiring is back: Tesla's headcount grew 7% to 134,785 by December 2025, after layoffs shrank it 11% in 2024.

What critics are saying

  • Growth isn't reaching profit: operating profit fell 57% to $398 million in the June 2026 quarter, a 1.4% margin.
  • Alphabet's Waymo is far ahead in robotaxis: Texas records in May 2026 listed 577 Waymo vehicles to Tesla's 42.
  • Stock grants have lost value: Tesla shares fell 17% in 2026 through October 8, after a December 2025 record.

What makes Tesla unique

  • Energy storage punches above its weight: Tesla's energy unit made 13% of 2025 sales but 22% of gross profit.
  • Tesla set the charging standard: Ford, GM and all major EV sellers in North America adopted its plug by 2024.
  • Robots are written into Musk's pay: his 2025 award sets goals of 1 million humanoid robots and 1 million robotaxis.

Tesla's energy, robotaxi and Optimus bets justify looking past a 16.3% auto margin

Tesla faces rising competition, shrinking margins and a valuation that leans on unproven businesses. Its automotive gross margin, excluding regulatory credits, fell from 26.7% in 2022 to 16.3% in the second quarter of 2026. Chinese rival BYD is expanding fast, and traditional automakers keep adding electric models. Still, one columnist argues the company is more than a carmaker. Energy generation and storage revenue rose 13% year over year to $3.14 billion in the second quarter, after $12.77 billion in 2025, up 27% from 2024. Tesla's manufacturing experience could also support its robotaxi and Optimus humanoid robot plans, though neither is proven. With the stock near $375, Morningstar values it at $450 per share, with roughly 30% tied to robotaxis. Piper Sandler values existing businesses at about $400 and keeps a $500 price target.

Musk admits he has "no idea" how to make microchips, plans $15B Terafab factory anyway

Elon Musk plans to build a semiconductor factory called Terafab in Texas, though he admits he has "no idea how to make microchips." He told customers and investors at the X Takeover event on Saturday, "we'll figure it out." The project involves Tesla and SpaceX, with Intel taking part. It calls for an initial investment of more than $15 billion and is expected to create 3,000 jobs. Musk believes his companies can eventually outperform chipmakers such as TSMC, Samsung, and Intel, though he said it could take several years. He plans to start with conventional equipment and modify it to speed up production. He called chipmaking "one of the hardest things to do in the world.

Humanoid robots could be a $5T market by 2050: Micron, Tesla and Alphabet poised to win

Morgan Stanley said last year that humanoid robots could become a $5 trillion market by 2050. The article names Micron, Tesla, and Alphabet as stocks that could benefit. Micron makes memory chips that robots need for AI inference and sensor processing. Its revenue rose 379% year over year in its fiscal 2026 fourth quarter, and it cites humanoid robots as a driver of future memory demand. Tesla sees its Optimus robots as its key source of value. Chief executive officer Elon Musk believes they can make Tesla a $25 trillion company; revenue rose 26% year over year in the second quarter. Alphabet offers cloud services, its Gemini AI model, and its own AI chips. Its Waymo unit delivers more than 500,000 paid robotaxi rides a week.

Tesla launches first Megacharger site with Pilot and joins Solana tokenised stock trading

Tesla has opened its first Megacharger site for heavy-duty electric trucks, in partnership with Pilot. The site, in Ellabell, targets freight carriers on major US trucking corridors. Each stall delivers up to 1.2 megawatts and can recover 60% charge in 30 minutes. Tesla plans further sites in California, Texas, Nevada, Georgia, and Indiana. Separately, Tesla stock is among the first US equities tokenised for blockchain trading through Securitize on the Solana network. Investors will watch whether Megachargers spread beyond Ellabell and turn into a usable freight network. An analysis cited in the article puts Tesla's fair value at $396.
