Canonical Evolution of Enterprise Open Source RISC-V at Hot Chips 2026. September 7, 2026 Canonical presented the Evolution of Enterprise Open Source RISC-V at Hot Chips 2026. Gordan Markuš, Canonical's Director of Silicon Alliances, walked through how Ubuntu is built, how ISA support is managed across architectures, and what it will take to make RISC-V enterprise-ready. ServeTheHome Networks, Inc. did this one live like its other Hot Chips coverage, but are publishing it a bit later around a cluster of RISC-V pieces. Canonical's underlying argument is that an Ubuntu system should behave like an Ubuntu system no matter what processor drives it. Its presentation builds from how Ubuntu packages are assembled and supported, then applies that model to RISC-V. Ubuntu is assembled from a kernel and user space that Canonical commits to supporting for years. This Universe package archive contains roughly 30,000 packages, while the smaller Main archive contains about 3,000 packages and offers a longer support window, up to 15 years with Ubuntu Pro. Canonical also maintains a portfolio of kernels tuned for hyperscaler and silicon partners, which matters for RISC-V because there is no single reference design. The core aim is for an Ubuntu system to always behave like an Ubuntu system, regardless of the ISA or platform. Canonical says its work is not done until it can long-term patch and maintain the released binary aggregation and deliver a unified Ubuntu experience, meaning every new architecture has to flow through the same release and maintenance cycle. Packages are built for each supported architecture, and each architecture gets a baseline, the oldest or least capable ISA and extension set that can run Ubuntu of that generation. Canonical provides server resources for building and distributing packages and maintains a core development team responsible for their upkeep. RISC-V may sound exotic, but Ubuntu supports not only Arm and x86 CPUs but also IBM POWER and Z mainframes. Canonical shows where each architecture baseline sits today. This amd64 target assumes the original 64-bit AMD and Intel CPUs, while arm64 uses an ARMv8-A baseline with VFPv4 and NEON. This RISC-V riscv64 target moved from the RVA20 profile to the RVA23 profile with Ubuntu 25.10. Beyond baselines, Ubuntu 25.10 introduced architecture variants, allowing packages to be built more than once, each targeting different CPU features. This amd64v3 variant targets the x86-64-v3 microarchitecture level, adding instructions such as AVX2, FMA, and BMI2 while retaining support for older machines. This is the same pattern Canonical plans to apply to future RISC-V profiles. If you saw the Update on RISC-V Standards and Adoption at Hot Chips 2026, the motivation will make sense. Ubuntu introduced arm64 support back in 2011, but really it was Ubuntu 16.04 LTS that made Arm server CPUs usable without lots of custom patching. It wants to support advanced features and platform-specific acceleration on new ISAs without weakening security and support SLAs. RVA23 is the standardized application baseline Canonical is targeting for 64-bit application processors. Since it requires vector operations, hypervisor support, and bit manipulation out of the box, RVA23 aims to deliver binary portability across diverse silicon and remove software porting ambiguity. The RVA23 profile ratification is done, and so is server platform ratification, with server-class RVA23 hardware expected from multiple vendors in 2026 and 2027. Canonical notes that unlocking a new major profile is non-trivial, since its build systems require upgrades and cross-team coordination. Profiles help ensure that hardware implementer roadmaps and software developer roadmaps can intersect. Package coverage on RISC-V is close to catching up with the mainstream builds. Around 95% of packages are currently available on RISC-V compared with amd64, while Snap support is still a work in progress because most publicly available snaps today target the client and desktop ecosystem. Its STH team generally prefers to use the more generic apt package manager rather than snaps, but here ServeTheHome Networks, Inc. is. With 3,443 packages under test and 1,898 passing, RISC-V posts about a 55.1 percent pass rate on an Ubuntu 26.10 test snapshot, well below the roughly 92 percent seen on amd64. Canonical attributes part of that to emulated build and test targets, stretching execution times from hours to days, and to adding native RISC-V builders with help from partners supplying server-grade RVA23 platforms. It also has a much lower percentage of packages that have tests than the other architectures, which gives you a good idea of just how mature RISC-V is. Canonical Kubernetes and MicroCloud are being ported for native RISC-V container orchestration and edge cloud. The company is working on bringing RISC-V out across its stack though. Open source collaboration is central to the push. Canonical participates in the RISE Project with RISC-V International, which targets commercial software readiness across mobile, consumer electronics, datacenter, and automotive. RISE focuses on accelerating open-source software for RISC-V, improving platform implementation quality, and aligning ecosystem efforts. Native RISC-V runners on Ubuntu 24.04 back a build and board farm hosted at Scaleway Elastic Metal with Alibaba and SpacemiT hardware, and the project reports 24,000 jobs and 700,000 minutes across 116 organizations. Taken together, Canonical is betting that standardized profiles and broad upstream collaboration can push RISC-V past the software readiness gap that has historically slowed open source adoption of new ISAs. It frames RVA23-style profiles as the way to make software targeting predictable and to make multi-architecture maturity the foundation for enterprise-grade deployments. Final words. With server-class RVA23 hardware arriving over the next two years, the software stack now has a fixed target to converge on. Hopefully this moves RISC-V into a more mainstream role. Still, it seems like there is quite a bit of ground to cover.
Canonical releases Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS, opening upgrades for noble Numbat users. Aug 29, 2026 The Register reports that Canonical has issued Ubuntu 26.04.1, the first point release of this year's long-term support edition, and that support for it will continue until 2031; upgrade options are now being made available to users of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat), since Canonical does not provide upgrades to LTS users until the first point release. Most of the official versions have released point releases corresponding to this one, although Ubuntu MATE and one other variant have not. System76 is also expected to launch Pop!_OS 26.04, based on Ubuntu 26.04.1. In the same way as has been the case with the earlier LTS versions, four more point releases should come after 26.04.1. Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS release, point-release schedule, and missing flavors. Ubuntu 26.04.1 is the first point release of the April LTS version and will be supported until 2031; if it adheres to the pattern set by earlier Ubuntu LTS releases then it will be followed by four more point releases, the last of which typically comes a little after the next LTS release, so Ubuntu 26.04.5 should arrive at some point after Ubuntu 28.04 and thus in or about September 2028. With the release, most of the remixes also receive their corresponding point releases, such as Kubuntu, Ubuntu Budgie, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu Studio, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, and Ubuntu Cinnamon; there are 10 official flavours but only eight point releases are listed. Two of the flavours have been left out of the point releases, since the official 26.04 version of Ubuntu MATE was not released, Martin Wimpress having decided to take on a new project known as Nøughty Linux. Ubuntu Unity isn't included in the list either, since the principal developer, Rudra Saraswat, is at university and as a result the remix failed to make the 25.10 release cycle. Some developers have taken on the work instead and there now is an Ubuntu Unity 26.04 release, but this version replaces a number of the subcomponents of the previous one and so it is not officially an LTS release. The Register advises Ubuntu Unity users to aim for the 26.10 release instead. Ubuntu 24.04 upgrade offers and the coming Pop!_OS 26.04 release. For users of the LTS version, the first point release marks the time when upgrades become available to those who wish to keep their system up to date. Since Canonical does not begin providing upgrades to LTS users until the first point release, users of Ubuntu 24.04 "Noble Numbat" will now start to receive upgrade offers. As the Register points out, the situation applies to both server users and desktop users because Canonical includes upgrade messages in the output of the apt command and therefore the offers for upgrades are not restricted to those using the graphical desktop. A less specific consequence in this regard is that System76's Pop!_OS 26.04 is due very soon, it being based on Ubuntu 26.04.1. The company had intended to have a release by the end of June, but this did not take place. Last December the team reached version 1.0 of its own COSMIC desktop and then, this week, launched COSMIC version 1.7.0. According to The Register, it has grown to like both COSMIC and Pop!_OS after an initial period of instability, noting that they are faster than Ubuntu itself and offering useful features such as being able to change the screen DPI on the go, although it has experienced freezes on older machines that are 10 to 15 years old. COSMIC is being developed more quickly than any other desktop in the Linux world, and the team has bold plans for "Epoch 2" and what comes after it. Availability. Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS is now available and will be supported until 2031, with upgrade options being made available to users of Ubuntu 24.04. The various official versions have point releases that correspond to each other, although Ubuntu MATE does not have a 26.04 version and Ubuntu Unity 26.04 is not an LTS edition. Pop!_OS 26.04 is due any time soon, but no definite release date has been confirmed, having already failed to meet an earlier target at the end of June.

Ubuntu 26.04.1 opens the Ubuntu 24.04 upgrade path. The point release gives administrators the supported LTS-to-LTS route through Update Manager or `do-release-upgrade`, without relying on the premature `-d` option. Why the upgrade was delayed. Canonical holds the LTS upgrade path until the first point release so early installation and upgrade problems can be addressed. Ubuntu 26.04.1 includes updates released since April and should reduce post-installation work, while the normal upgrade process avoids the risks associated with forcing a development-release transition. Administrators should still back up systems, fully update Ubuntu 24.04, disable third-party repositories temporarily, and schedule time to review configuration prompts for services such as SSH, Nginx, and Postfix. Production systems do not need to move immediately: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS receives standard security updates through May 2029. What 26.04.1 changes. The release does not introduce major new features or a hardware enablement stack; the latter is expected with Ubuntu 26.04.2. It does provide refreshed installation media containing accumulated updates, including images for Raspberry Pi, Arm64, and RISC-V. Existing Ubuntu 26.04 installations do not need to download the new ISO. They can install the available updates through Update Manager, and existing 26.04 installation media remains usable when followed by a normal package update. Upgrade options for administrators. Ubuntu 24.04 users can start the supported transition with sudo do-release-upgrade or through the graphical update manager. Although do-release-upgrade -d can force an earlier transition, it is intended for testing and is not an appropriate choice for production servers now that the stable upgrade path is available.
