About the company

Meta builds Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads, apps that billions of people use to message friends, share photos and video, and follow creators and businesses. Most of its revenue comes from advertising: businesses buy placements across these apps, and Meta's AI systems decide who sees each ad and report the results. Its Meta Superintelligence Labs group builds the company's own AI models, the Meta AI assistant and the Muse agent app. Its Reality Labs unit makes Quest headsets and, with eyewear maker EssilorLuxottica, Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses. Meta was founded as Facebook in 2004 and is based in Menlo Park, California.

What believers are saying

  • A booming ad business backs pay and stock: Meta's revenue rose 28% to $60.8 billion in the June 2026 quarter.
  • AI engineers get vast resources: Meta expects $130 billion to $145 billion of capital spending in 2026.
  • Wearables teams are scaling: in February 2026, Meta sought to double glasses output to 20 million units this year.

What critics are saying

  • Job security is shaky: about 8,000 employees were hit by Meta's May 2026 layoffs, aimed at funding its AI push.
  • Meta's biggest apps still face a breakup fight: the FTC appealed its Instagram and WhatsApp court win in January 2026.
  • Hardware plans get reshuffled: Meta cut about 1,500 Reality Labs jobs in January 2026, shifting from the metaverse to wearables.

What makes Meta unique

  • Meta's four apps form one huge audience: 3.56 billion people used them daily in March 2026.
  • Meta leads smart glasses through eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica: their Ray-Ban and Oakley models sold over 7 million pairs in 2025.
  • Meta builds consumer AI agents in-house: its Muse app, launched September 2026, topped Apple's US free-app chart within ten days.

Tech selloff wipes $1T off Nasdaq 100 as Intel plunges 30% on AI spending fears

Big Tech stocks fell sharply this week as investors worried that heavy spending on artificial intelligence (AI) won't pay off soon. The Nasdaq 100 dropped roughly 4%, wiping out more than $1 trillion in value, while the S&P 500 fell more than 2% on Friday afternoon. Intel's stock plunged more than 30% to roughly $62 after it gave a weak fourth-quarter outlook. ServiceNow fell 27% on Thursday after weaker-than-expected third-quarter results. Amazon, Alphabet and Meta also dropped after earnings; Amazon reported negative free cash flow of $42 billion. S&P 500 earnings growth has slipped to roughly 26% from 32% in the second quarter. Some investors are trimming tech gains to buy cheaper stocks elsewhere, though analysts such as Dan Ives remain optimistic about tech's long-term prospects.

Investors balk as Big Tech's $740B AI spending spree drains free cash flow

Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft plan to spend more than $740 billion on capital expenditure this year, mostly on AI data centres and chips. Investors, once supportive, are growing wary of negative free cash flow, rising debt, and uncertain returns. The Nasdaq fell 2.9% on Friday. Alphabet dropped 12% on Thursday, its worst day on record, wiping out $500 billion in market value. Amazon fell 7% and Meta 10%. Alphabet reported negative free cash flow of $9.1 billion in the third quarter, and Amazon $42.4 billion over 12 months. Meta's was negative $2.1 billion. Microsoft was the exception, with positive $18.6 billion. Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle raised a combined $326 billion in debt in 2026, triple last year's amount. The strain could complicate Anthropic's planned IPO.

AI's $1.6T spending spree hinges on the bond market, not stocks

Big Tech shares tumbled this week as investors questioned the cost of building AI infrastructure. Google had its worst day ever, while Intel fell more than on any day since the Nixon administration. The Nasdaq is just over a percentage point from a 10% correction. Yet spending continues. AI investment has reached $1.6 trillion since 2023 and is expected to hit $1 trillion a year for about a decade, according to JPMorgan. The bond market is funding much of it. Goldman Sachs expects hyperscalers to issue about $250 billion in bonds this year and estimates $510 billion of investment-grade debt is available to them. The key question, the analysis argues, is how long lenders will keep financing the spree. Rising yields could lift borrowing costs, as CoreWeave's bonds, which surged to 15%, show.

Big Tech's AI spending drains cash: Amazon burns $42.4B, only Microsoft stays positive

Big tech's AI spending is straining the legacy businesses that fund it. Meta, Alphabet, and Amazon reported negative free cash flow this quarter, leaving Microsoft as the only hyperscaler still positive. Meta's outflow was $2.12 billion, Alphabet's $9.07 billion, and Amazon's $42.4 billion. Microsoft's free cash flow fell 27% to $18.63 billion, its second straight sharp decline, and it will now turn to the bond market. Alphabet's search growth slowed for a third straight quarter, and its shares had their steepest drop ever. Amazon expects capital expenditure of $220 billion this year, while Meta plans to raise $95 billion in stock. Bullish investors say the giants' dominant core businesses can carry the spending.

Meta quietly launches Style Sketch, an AI app that builds outfits from your own wardrobe

Meta has quietly launched Style Sketch, an AI app that helps users plan outfits from clothes they already own. It is available on iOS and Android in Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. The app builds a virtual closet from a user's Instagram photos, or users can add items by photo, video, or camera roll upload. It then suggests outfits and lets users try them on a model matched to their body shape and skin tone. Users can also plan trips by entering a destination, trip length, and activities to get a day-by-day outfit plan that accounts for weather. Meta has not said whether it will expand the app. It is one of several recent AI apps from the company, as chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg pushes to release more apps.
