How Matthieu Blazy made Chanel luxury's great exception.

How Matthieu Blazy made Chanel luxury's great exception. October 21, 2026 Chanel profits are up, US sales are soaring 25% and the Princess of Wales is carrying the bag, as Matthieu Blazy's joy-first reset defies the luxury slump On Monday the Princess of Wales welcomed the Sultan of Oman to Windsor Castle carrying a quilted Chanel flap bag, the kind of product placement no marketing budget on Earth can buy. Her timing was impeccable. The house on her arm is currently the only great luxury story of 2026 pointing upward. Chanel's profits grew 5% in the first year under Matthieu Blazy, Artistic Director of Chanel, with fashion sales up 16% across the first half of 2026 and US sales up a remarkable 25%, all while sector leader LVMH was reporting its fifth consecutive half-year of falling revenue. Matthieu's explanation of the philosophy behind the numbers is the best mission statement in the industry. "The idea that you can bring joy," he says, "and still be very serious about what you have to say." The comeback at a glance * Chanel profits rose 5% in Matthieu Blazy's first year, with fashion sales up 16% in H1 2026 and US sales up 25%. * Revenue neared US$20bn last year, with fashion making up nearly two-thirds of it. * Chanel still sells nothing online. Every fashion and leather-goods purchase happens in one of nearly 300 boutiques, with nine more opening this year. * Blazy, 42, is the house's first regime-change appointment since Karl Lagerfeld, hired away from Bottega Veneta. * Chanel remains fully owned by Alain and Gérard Wertheimer, grandsons of Coco Chanel's original business partner. The glass slipper fits. Five years ago the New York Times greeted Matthieu's arrival at Bottega Veneta with the headline question "Who is Matthieu Blazy?", a fair query about a studio deputy who had spent two decades supporting Raf Simons, Phoebe Philo and Nicolas Ghesquière from the shadows. Six Bottega shows later he had the most coveted job in fashion. Bruno Pavlovsky, President of Fashion Activities at Chanel, admits the house budgeted two to three years for him to settle in. "We were totally convinced by Matthieu," Bruno says, "but the success came faster than what we forecast." The moment Matthieu believed it was the March morning his debut collection reached stores, when the retail team called in the evening with a full house of fashion kids, Chanel newbies and longtime clients, a frenzy private shoppers called unprecedented for any debut in memory. His reaction ran to two words, which he still repeats: Thank God. "I cannot pretend in front of a woman who has 40 years of embroidery at Lesage that I might know better how to do it." Matthieu Blazy, Artistic Director, Chanel A boss who has been the intern. Matthieu's management style reads like a case study in creative leadership at scale. He oversees ready-to-wear, accessories and haute couture plus 70 maisons d'art, the specialist craft houses behind Chanel's embroidery, buttons, feathers and pleats, some of them older than Chanel itself. His method with his designers is to speak last, so nobody self-censors, and he keeps even rejected ideas turning over for seasons. "We build it up," he says. "It's like a cake." With the craft houses he leads from humility. "I cannot pretend in front of a woman who has 40 years of embroidery at Lesage that I might know better how to do it," he says, arguing that his point of view colliding with her experience is where the ideas improve. Serious about joy. This autumn's imagery stars a Chanel woman with board seats, flap bags that flirt with briefcases and couture suiting fit for a congressional hearing, alongside a silver Chanel geometry set in crocodile-stamped leather for the executive who has everything. The anxiety now is keeping it going, and Bruno is candid about it. "We've almost become more demanding of ourselves, because we want to keep this momentum, you know?" On the evidence of Monday, momentum is holding. When the most photographed woman in Britain reaches for a quilted flap bag on a state occasion, the second century of Chanel looks after its own publicity. Who are Chanel's key partners? Lesage: The storied Parisian embroidery atelier within Chanel's métiers d'art family, whose artisans hand-work the house's couture. Led by Artistic Director Hubert Barrère; based in Pantin, Paris. Barrie: The Scottish knitwear specialist producing Chanel's cashmere, owned by the house since 2012. Based in Hawick, Scotland. Massaro: The bootmaker behind Chanel's two-tone slingback, crafting footwear for the house since the Coco era. Based on Rue de la Paix, Paris, since 1894. Company Portals

Kiss of luxury! CHANEL's new $215 lip balm is the ultimate beauty indulgence.

Kiss of luxury! CHANEL's new $215 lip balm is the ultimate beauty indulgence. October 20, 2026 Part skincare, part lipstick, all CHANEL. Meet the chicest little lip luxury on its holiday wish list. Pucker up, darling! CHANEL is giving its lips the five-star treatment with the launch of 31 LE ROUGE LIP BALM, a luxurious new addition to its iconic 31 LE ROUGE collection that's making a seriously convincing case for splurging on your pout. Inspired by the legendary 31 rue Cambon address in Paris, this isn't your average lip balm. Think nourishing gardenia-infused oil and maracuja oil, combined with luminous, buildable colour that leaves lips looking beautifully polished while helping to hydrate, smooth and soften. And the shades? Très chic. The permanent collection features five timeless hues - LE BEIGE, LE BOIS DE ROSE, LE ROSE, LE ROUGE and LE GRENAT - alongside three limited-edition holiday shades perfect for a little festive glamour. But perhaps the most swoon-worthy detail is the packaging. Housed in CHANEL's signature refillable, faceted glass case, this beauty looks every bit as gorgeous on your vanity as it does pulled from your handbag. At $215 CAD, it's undeniably an indulgence, but for the beauty lover who appreciates a little everyday extravagance, it's also a rather fabulous gift. Available at select CHANEL Beauty counters in Canada and at chanel.com. Because sometimes, luxury really is just a kiss away. - Noa Nichol

Jennifer Lawrence teases biodesign-driven hair care brand Mes°.

Jennifer Lawrence teases biodesign-driven hair care brand Mes°. The Oscar-winning actress just posted a link to the brand on Instagram. October 16, 2026, 12:42pm Is Jennifer Lawrence the next celebrity poised to launch a brand? The A-list Oscar-winning actress, whose credits include The Hunger Games series, Mother!, Silver Linings Playbook and much more, took to Instagram Friday to share a carousel of images of her with different hairstyles for various different roles. They range from sleek updos to blond bangs to red hair to super messy and everything else in between. Then a link to a brand called Mes° appeared underneath her Instagram handle, which leads to a landing page stating that the hair care brand has been biodesigned by Lawrence and Arcaea, the biotech company founded by MIT grad Jasmina Aganovic. As of yet, there's no other details on the brand, apart from the tag line stating "a new perspective on beauty" next to the date Oct. 27. There is also a sign-up line for those who want to "get curious." This comes after Lawrence recently joined Instagram in September with a video joking "So yeah, I'm giving it a shot and if anyone says anything negative I'll quit immediately." Arcaea has raised an impressive $78 million in series A funding from investors including Chanel, Givaudan and Olaplex. Other celebrity beauty brand founders include Blake Lively, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Lady Gaga, Hailey Bieber and Selena Gomez. Newsletters

Bruno Pavlovsky quits Chanel Limited board but stays fashion president

Bruno Pavlovsky has resigned from the board of Chanel Limited but stays on as president of fashion at Chanel and president of Chanel SAS, the company said on Thursday. Chanel said the move completes the board's shift to independent directors, with executive representation kept through the global executive chairman and global chief executive officer. Pavlovsky, 63, joined Chanel in 1990 and has led its fashion division since 2004. He is the last of a generation of senior executives still in place since Leena Nair became global chief executive officer in 2021. His exit from the board follows a succession plan begun five years ago by the Wertheimer family, which owns Chanel. The company's revenues rose 3% to $19.3 billion in 2025.
